Two MOTHER's!! Both desperate to shelter their children from the impending sorrow.
Vandana, who has accurately perceived that behind Maya's action lies her obsession, obsession to attain Arjun, obsession to attain her refuge, shield, and a home!. Vandana knows that Arjun would not be happy with the trade-off in the long run. She is trying her best to din some sense into Arjun's thick skull which unfortunately seems to be made of Teflon coated platinum. Her next best choice of Sanjh too falls flat as she too appears to have made peace with the wedding, but the mother in her will not accept defeat, Vandana will try her best to break the unholy alliance.
Whereas we have Jhanvi equally determined to safeguard her daughter's happiness. She knows, Maya's happiness, her peace, her strength lies in Arjun and whom she must have bound to him for all of the eternity. The mother who was oblivious to Maya's harsh childhood, the mother who sloshed through N number of vodka, martini to keep her delusion of Ashwin's love has finally woken up. The vacuous woman has grown a spine and is firm in her resolve - of offeringArjun on a platter to ensure Maya's happiness!!
Let the battle of Mother' begin...
Meanwhile, the sacrificial goat is unaware of the battle strategies of the mother's and has headed to his doom aka party... A party that should have been right in the alley of Arjun but isn't. Where his every impulsive action is constantly checked by the presence of disapproving Maya in his imagination.
The man-child rises to the bait of being a "MAN" when his friends tease him . Nonetheless, he is uneasy about letting go and be the wild stallion.
Yes, Arjun appears to be supremely happy in his upcoming nuptials but, the subconscious has begun to perceive the cage, the confining and narrowing boundary that's limiting his freedom. He has begun to chafe at the leash but is still enamored of the power, status to cut loose. One day, as Vandana predicted Arjun is going to react & react very badly to the restrictions. I am curious to see Maya's reaction then.
Maya ko mein apne ungli mein nachata hoon, Arjun says but he does know that it is he who is dancing to Maya's tunes. What happens when the music gets faster, discordant?
The walking away from Sanjh to the jeep was in a way a symbolic walking away from his old way of life. Sanjh was his conscience keeper, one who told him when he did something wrong, one who told him to correct his course when he took a wrong turn and today, he has walked away from his conscience!!
Another sequence I liked was when Maya in anger, recklessly and impulsively decides to mow down Vandana, the obstacle to her happiness. She throws the car in gear, hurtles forward to crush the hurdle when out of darkness come's Arjun's voice, pulling her back to reality, to sanity from the brink of an insanity.
CRIBBING POINT:
How Long was Vandana waiting? Maya arrived at Arjun's apartment at the same or even before Sanjh arrived?
