I didn't do anything special to play Ishaan": Darsheel Safary By Subhash K Jha, 6 January 2008, Filmicafe.com |
All of 11, Darsheel Safary effortlessly played a nine-year-old bewildered dyslexic in Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par. In real life, though, Darsheel isn't sullen at all. In fact, he is just another brat trying to come to terms with being praised for his debutant role. Are you tired of all the praise Darsheel? No, not at all. In fact, you're the first person to be asking me this. So, how does it feel? Nice, very nice (smiles). How did you manage to play such a mixed-up little boy? I didn't do anything special to play Ishaan. I guess it sort of came naturally since I've been taking elocution classes. We sing, act and say dialogues in that class. Also, I've been attending Shiamak uncle's dance classes. Were you scared to act with Aamir Khan? No, I wasn't scared of acting in Aamir uncle's film. He isn't at all proud. He's down-to-earth and doesn't behave like a big star. How did you land this role? One uncle came to Shiamak Davar's school and saw me there. They said, let's try this boy out. Then at audition Aamir uncle really liked me. That's how I got the film. My parents didn't know anything about the film industry. They made inquiries and then we accepted the offer. Now, everyone is saying, I'm amazing (smiles). Do you feel like a star? Hmm.. I think so. I had fun with my co-stars. You know what, at night after shooting was wrapped up I'd party with my co-stars Tanay Cheda and Sanchet Engineer (who play Darsheel's best friend and brother respectively). The other kids had to sleep at 9 pm. But the three of us partied till 3 am. Aamir uncle used to get very angry the next morning. What are your friends in the building saying? I don't have any friends in my building. Then what about those in your school? We had a vacation when the film released so I wasn't in touch with my friends in school. That's why I didn't even call them for the movie. Did you know what dyslexia was before you did the film? No, but I knew my character was going through problems. When I saw the script and read it I wondered what it was. You read the whole script? Ya! There were days when we just practiced our scenes with Aamir uncle, Tanay and Sanchet. While rehearsing I got to know what dyslexia is. Like your character Ishaan, do you have problems at school? No, no, no…I've faced none of Ishaan's problems. But I'd like to tell you that all those expressions are mine. With just a flair for acting, would you want to make it a career when you grow up? I'll decide on that when I do grow up. Right now I don't know whether I want to be an actor. I just want to study now. No more movies for me. Half the day I'm doing my homework and going to school. (After a pause) But if I get an offer with Hrithik Roshan I'll do it. You're a Hrithik fan? A huge fan. But I also like Shah Rukh and Aamir. And actresses? I like Kareena Kapoor. But for acting, I like Rani Mukherjee and for facial expressions I like Aishwarya Rai. Now that you have rated the actresses, how do you rate yourself? I think I liked myself. My six-year-old sister cried when she saw the teachers beat me up in the film. What's your one wish for the New Year? To act with Hrithik Roshan (laughs). Aamir uncle even told me that he has seen my film. |
