Raees: Has MNS's bullying ACTUALLY worked post Ae Dil Hai Mushkil?
The MNS is 'allowing' the release of Shah Rukh Khan's Raees, featuring Pakistani actor Mahira Khan. But were they even a real threat in the first place?

With almost three months having passed since the Uri attacks took place (September 18), tempers have cooled. Public memory is short-lived, we are past the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil hullabaloo, and no one is in the mood to boycott a film just for featuring a Pakistani actor any longer.

Yet, Shah Rukh Khan paid a visit to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's residence last night to placate him. SRK's upcoming film Raees was under threat for featuring Pakistani actor Mahira Khan, and he did not want a sword hanging over the release of the film.

A similar incident took place before the release of Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) this year. Just when everyone thought the situation had reached an impasse with Karan Johar refusing to chop off Pakistani actor Fawad Khan's role from the film and the MNS adamant that it will bring a violent end to ADHM if it sees the light of day, Karan met the MNS chief and the MNS withdrew their threat. The film was released sans any major problem.

Raj Thackeray tom-tommed the decision as a victory, saying that he has allowed the release only after Karan Johar promised to pay Rs 5 crore to the Army welfare fund as "penance". That the Army rejected the donation as extortion did not matter to Thackeray. So what if Raj Thackeray himself hadn't contributed a penny? He had browbeaten others into making promises of huge donations, and that was enough. At least for him.

Another Pakistani actor, Imran Abbas Naqvi, too was a part of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. But he was spared the wrath of the MNS. Surely the know-it-all party who bragged that every Pakistani artist had left India because of their 48-hour ultimatum knew that Imran also belonged to The-Country-That-Must-Not-Be-Named?

The only thing that happened back then, and is happening now too, is the MNS coming off looking extremely juvenile in this scenario. The jingoism did not deter the Indian audience from flocking to the theatres in huge numbers. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil made over 200 crores worldwide, and all promises of a contribution to the Army fund were conveniently forgotten.
Soon after, another Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dear Zindagi was released with Pakistani actor Ali Zafar. No one took to the streets, no one vandalised property. Maybe it was Ali missing from the film's trailers that threw them off, and watching the film to find out was too much of a task for the MNS. At any rate, Dear Zindagi beat the demonetisation blues and raked in the big bucks.
Shah Rukh Khan is no stranger to these bullying tactics. In 2010, the release of his My Name Is Khan (MNIK) was threatened to be stalled by the Shiv Sena over his supportive stance regarding Pakistani cricketers in the Indian Premiere League. The fate of the film was under a cloud of uncertainty, even on the night before the release. But fans thronged the theatres to watch MNIK, and the film's success was a rude awakening for the Shiv Sena.

Raees producer Farhan Akhtar had made his stance clear weeks ago. There was no question of coughing up the money, and Mahira would be retained. Even at the trailer launch, the makers were unfazed. Perhaps they know best... how empty vessels make the most noise.

India Today's expose took the pants off phony MNS 'patriots' who claimed to be staging protests with a nationalistic agenda. One can rent a riot for Rs 25 lakh, as our undercover reporters found out in Mumbai. These protests help fund the party's electoral campaign, it was revealed.

With the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) elections approaching and the MNS still reeling from its many defections to rival parties, this is a clever ploy to stay in the news. The MNS has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons, from former party loyalists criticising the top brass to their dearth of candidates for the upcoming polls. Getting a pat on the back for their deshbhakti might just turn their fortunes around, they probably think.
And as for films, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Box office results are proof of the edge that Ae Dil Hai Mushkil gained over its competitor Shivaay for the relentless media coverage it got.
At the trailer release of Raees a few days ago, co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani said that Pakistani actor Mahira Khan would 'promote the film in India if she was required to'. At this point, just a few days later, Shah Rukh Khan meeting Thackeray only seems a move to lull Raj Thackeray and the MNS into a state of complacency. Or is it a clever move to gain the viewership of bhakts? Come January 25, 2017, and we will know.

Mumbai: In politics and Bollywood there is a golden rule - no permanent foes. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan paid a surprise visit to MNS chief Raj Thackeray's home on Sunday before the release of his movie Raees, which stars Pakistani actor Mahira Khan.

Although social media was abuzz with the two men meeting, the MNS has stated that SRK visited Mr Thackeray to clarify that Pakistani actress Mahira Khan wouldn't be appearing for Raees's promotion. MNS general secretary, Shalini Thackeray said, "Shah Rukh Khan came to meet Raj Thackeray without any mediation from our side. There has been no threat issued from our side despite rumours."

Before the release of writer-producer Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Mr Thackeray had issued a statement saying that this party won't let the movie release because it starred Fawad Khan, a Pakistani actor.

However, Mr Thackeray withdrew the statement after Mr Johar agreed to deposit Rs 5 crore in the Army Welfare Scheme.

"All our issues were resolved earlier, this time we have no issues, but he (SRK) came to clarify his stand on the same," said Ms Thackeray. The MNS has alleged that they have been used for publicity many a times. "There have been times when filmmakers have tried using us for publicity, but here that doesn't seem to be the case," said Ms Thackeray.

It may be recalled that few years ago, SRK took a strong stand after facing the wrath of Shiv Sena during the release of his movie, My Name is Khan. SRK had made a remark stating there was no harm in including Pakistani cricketers in the IPL. The Sena wanted Mr Khan to retract his statement and apologise but SRK dug his heels and refused.

Hence, SRK's decision of visiting Thackeray on Sunday has become a topic of debate. The Congress seems to have taken charge of this matter. Sanjay Nirupam, Mumbai Congress chief has posed a rhetorical question to the chief minister questioning Mr Thackeray's authority under which he receives the celebrities visiting him for permission. "Is Raj Thackeray running a parallel government, that Shah Rukh Khan had to go meet him and seek his permission for releasing his movie," said Mr Nirupam.

IS RAJ THACKERAY A PRISONER OF HIS OWN IMAGE?

By Chaitanya Marpakwar, Mumbai Mirror | Dec 13, 2016, 08.59 AM IST
From a leader who once looked like he could decimate Shiv Sena, Raj now gets his cheap thrills by arm-twisting hapless film producers and actors

Just hours before Raj Thackeray hosted superstar Shah Rukh Khan at his Dadar home on Sunday evening and secured an assurance that Pakistani actor Mahira Khan won't promote Raees, one of Raj's closest aides and his party MNS's general secretary Sanjay Ghadi joined the rival Shiv Sena. The two events encapsulate Raj and his party's story for the past couple of years now -a leader desperately trying to stay relevant by growling every once in while at mostly defenceless targets, while his men smirk, even laugh, their way into rival camps. In Mumbai's fast-changing world of politics, where parties have moved on from violence, threats, and disruption as tools to win support and embraced a more inclusive development agenda, Raj possibly stands as the city's last surviving bully. A relic of his uncle and Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray's brand of politics, in which bluster almost always triumphed reason. The political decline of MNS has been just as dramatic as its rise. Just four years after splitting from the parent Shiv Sena, the MNS had won 13 seats in the 2009 assembly elections, a commendable feat for a new party. It further strengthened its reputation as a force to reckon with when in the 2012 civic elections, the party won 28 seats. It had then embarrassed the Sena by bagging all seven wards in the Dadar area, considered the Sena's bastion.

But things changed in all of four years. In the recently concluded civic elections across the state, the MNS managed to win only around a dozen seats. The All India Majlise-Ittehadul Muslimeen, a fledgling party fighting for minority interests, won around 40 seats. Raj's partymen have been deserting him in droves for a couple for years now. It's a procession that shows no sign of ending. Already, close to half-a-dozen MNS corporators have joined either the BJP or the Shiv Sena. Its tally in the BMC is down from 28 to 22 and it is likely to fall further. In the last assembly elections in 2014, while the MNS contested all 288 seats, it won only one.

Even that MLA, Sharad Sonavane from Junnar in Pune district, has formed his own party since.

There hasn't been a week since last May when an MNS functionary hasn't quit. Not just in Mumbai, but party activists from across the state have deserted Raj.Last month, MNS corporator Ravindra Davne, the party's sole representative in the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, joined the BJP.

According to MNS insiders, the party's second-rung leaders have all but disappeared. None of the former legislators are carrying out any political work. And the only space the party garners in news is because of two leaders -group leader in the BMC Sandeep Deshpande, and Amey Khopkar, who heads the party's film wing. And both Deshpande and Khopkar have not been able to extend the party's appeal beyond its strong-arm tactics. Deshpande was recently arrested for forcing a civic chief engineer to walk the potholed roads carrying a plac ard that read "I am responsible for potholes."

Khopkar, of course, has raised the bogey of Pakistani actors finding work in Bollywood when the neighbouring country is waging a proxy war against India. He first targeted Karan Johar for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which had Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in a substantial role. The film released in Mumbai only after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis brokered a much-criticised deal between Raj and Johar, which included a payout of Rs 5 crore to the Army Welfare Fund. The move was not only labelled 'extortion' by almost all observers, but Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar also refused to accept the money, heaping embarrassment on both Raj and Fadnavis.

Raj's overdependence on his party's film wing to create noise not only demonstrates his depleted strength, but it also exposes a complete lack of new ideas in the party.

MNS workers stage a protesr at a toll naka

So while Raj gets his cheap thrills by dragging Bollywood personalities to his house and posing for photographs with them, his cousin and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray is taking the Union government to task over poor implementation of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, earning him a place at Delhi's high table. When he was in Delhi last week, he got time both with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss demonetisation.

Raj, political observers say, has become a prisoner of his own image. Having modelled himself on his uncle Bal Thackeray's style, Raj has always believed in violence over reason. During the formative days of MNS, his men had hit headlines for beating up north Indian candidates visiting the city to appear in railway exams. While this was done to protect Marathi candidates, no thought was given to the fact that it did not in any way benefit local lads.

But then this is the only way of doing politics that Raj knows. "This is the only way he can remain relevant. It's said that now the MNS has only two things -nuisance value and news value. Bollywood has always been a soft target. Earlier, the Sena too was in the same league, but it has now moved on with changing times. But the MNS seems to be stuck. These threats and arm-twisting are getting Raj TRPs, but no votes," said a political observer.

Senior journalist Kumar Ketkar said Raj's obsession with threatening people into submission actually displays a huge political weakness."To overcome that political weakness, the party will have to engage itself in activities that will help it create a new identity," he said.

Deshpande, however, rubbished the analysts. "One election result is not enough to draw any conclusions. We will bounce back in the BMC polls. Those who are writing the MNS's obituary will be shocked and will have to eat their own words. Our stand against Pakistani actors has been very clear from day one and we are sticking to it. It is our victory that producers are refusing to let Pakistani actors promote films in India on their own," Deshpande said.

Raj's real hope of staying afloat is actually not photo-ops with actors and producers, it is in BJP's continued faith in his ability to cause damage to the Shiv Sena. Many believe Fadnavis's misadventure around Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was born out of his desire to keep Raj up and running so that he can be propped up against an increasingly domineering Shiv Sena wherever required.

How desirable is it for Raj to be reduced to a prop in the fight between the Sena and the BJP? But then again, if Bollywood defines the boundaries of your politics, then it is unlikely you will get more than a side-role in politics.
