I watched the film and her performance was not extraordinary at all. Her Bihari accept was PATHETIC to say the least. She had 4 expressions throughout the film. The film in itself was mediocre and wasn't even a box office hit.
I would have understood if she won for Highway because she was genuinely good there. But her winning for Udta Punjab is such a sham. Sonam Kapoor the so-called non-actress wasn't half bad in Neerja. Of course it wasn't some great performance but at least she did a decent job and carried the film. The film is a super hit too and won raves for the critics.
Other than Neerja there have been quite a few other great female performances like Swara Bhaskar (Nil Battey Sannata), Radhika Apte (Phobia, Parched), Taapsee Pannu (Pink). All these were hands down better than Alia in Udta Punjab. Then why didn't they win? (I am not even counting other decent performances by popular actresses like like Vidya in Kahaani 2, Aishwarya in Sarabjit, Kareena in Ki Ka)
If the criteria was that the actress needs to be famous, then why not give it to Sonam Kapoor, whose film was even more loved?
