Chapter 3: Easing into a new office and home.
As he studied the file, Keshav was impressed with the way the case had been handled. As he prepared his notes, he realized that he needed to verify some law points. He cast a glance outside his cabin to see Suchitra was not her place. He got up and poked her head in Radhika's cabin without knocking and was surprised to see her and Suchitra giggling over something. Seeing him though, Radhika put on a professional demeanor, and flashed him a small smile as she waited for him to say something.
"Sorry to ruin your fun, ladies. But, Suchitra, could you please tell me how to navigate the legal database on our intranet. I just needed to research a point."
Suchitra immediately got up and said, "sure sir, if you tell me, I could find out what you need.. just tell me.."
"No that's okay, if you could just show me how to navigate, I should be fine."
She nodded and followed him to his cabin.
While she was showing him and writing down the required paths and passwords, he asked her, "did I intrude on you both just now?" he thought back to the slight flicker of irritation on Radhika's face when he had entered her cabin.
She hesitantly answered, "No.. sir, nothing like that. It's just that.." she stopped.
He asked encouragingly, "its just that..?? Please continue!"
"Mam doesn't like anyone to come into her cabin without knocking"
He looked up surprised, "Do you also knock?"
She nodded sharply, "Always!"
A while later, he met Shailesh to discuss an attempted man-slaughter case with him. Later in the day, Sailesh also handed over a drunk-driving case to him to handle solely, on instructions from Mr. Malhotra. Sailesh stressed the fact that Gujarat being a dry state, the drunk-driving was a much more serious offence here than elsewhere, and as such needed to be handled differently from other states.
As he drove home that evening, Keshav thought back to his first day at his new workplace and the interesting people he had met. Everyone was quite interesting and friendly with him. He thought of Radhika. Though friendly, she wasn't as open as others. Oh well, he thought, maybe she's just reserved.
Malini greeted him with a hug and a peck on his cheek as he entered. Little Diya ran into her father's arms, only to be picked up. As he swirled her in his arms pecked her forehead and the two talked in baby language, Malini got tea for him.
As Diya settled on the sofa next to him with her toys, Malini asked, "Did you like the new place? How were the people?"
As they talked about his new office and the people, he again thought of Radhika.
"And you know, your hubby already has a final hearing in his kitty!" he beamed.
"wow really, that's fabulous! But how come?"
He told her Radhika's problem with the date and how he volunteered.
She said thoughtfully, "Really, it must be so tough handling home and office. I wonder how these women manage. I simply cant imagine doing it.."
He put an arm around her, "that's because you have never tried. Anyways, you tell me. How was your day? Have you unpacked and settled the kitchen and everything?
She grimaced, "settling the kitchen in a day? Are you serious?"
He laughed, "but it's only temporary, right? Till we buy an apartment and move in, we don't need to unpack everything, do we?"
"You don't understand, do you?" she replied in the same tone. "for a single meal, do you have any idea how many ingredients are needed?"
"And I tell you so many times to keep it simple. Why do you need to make so many elaborate dishes?"
"Are you saying you would like to have Khichdi every night at dinner?" she teased, since he did not like Khichdi at all.
He was miffed, "sorry! I get your point." They both burst out laughing, "By the way, what's for dinner?"
"Are you hungry?"
"no, not yet, I m just having my tea."
"Well.. you will be instantly hungry when I tell you what's for dinner." Malini teased.
He looked up with glee, "Biryani?"
She nodded and he hugged her. Biryani was one of his most favorite dishes!
