Chapter 5: The Disagreement
Radhika was in a foul mood as she poured over the divorce case of Gayatri Dave Vs. Sumant Dave. Cases like these, that made her conscience irk, when you had to stand against the right person, in court.
She went to the library to get the book on The Hindu Marriage Act, she needed when she came face to face with Keshav.
"Hi Radhika, how was the PTM?" asked Keshav conversationally.
Radhika, already miffed, said almost rudely, "Who told you about the PTM?"
Keshav gauging her mood said somberly, "what happened? I just overheard when you said to Suchitra that you are leaving to attend a PTM."
"I didn't know, one of Keshav Mehra's skills was eavesdropping" she retorted sarcastically.
He thought she was just being witty so he raised his eyebrows dramatically and said, "it's a very useful skill for a lawyer, you know?"
"Will you please leave me alone?" she nearly shouted.
He raised his hands in surrender, "Okay. Sorry!" and he walked away from the library. Radhika felt instantly sorry for her behavior. She calmed herself down and after taking the book, went to his cabin door, which was open. He looked up.
She hesitated, "Umm.. Keshav.. I m really sorry. I was stressed and.."
"That's okay. I understand" he said in an easy tone with a slight smile.
"Thanks!" said she turned to go, when he asked, "care to share your problem?"
Something about the way she said it, made her feel he was genuinely concerned. She walked inside and took a chair, "have you ever felt your conscience pricking at you?"
He nodded, "it's a necessary evil of this profession we have chosen, unfortunately." Then after a pause, continued, "what's the case bothering u?"
"Gayatri Dave Vs. Sumant Dave. Divorce case. We are for the woman, who is the applicant!"
"I see. So whats the issue that makes you uncomfortable?"
"The case in it's entirety!"
"Care to explain?"
Radhika rubbed her forehead tiredly. "Well, actually the client is one of those girls who marry so that they can either henpeck their husbands and if the poor guy stands up for himself, God help him. These women would file fake domestic violence FIRs with the police and later file divorce. They milk the guy dry in the name of alimony! I'm sick of this pattern that's growing in the past few years" she explained with a disgusted sigh towards the end.
"Pattern? Sorry, I didn't get that." said keshav.
"These girls usually choose hard working professionals who have jobs with MNCs & private companies. The poor guys can't afford to attend court hearing due to their high-pressure 9 to 5 jobs. And these girls take advantage of that to pressure them to get out of court settlement. And then many of these girls go ahead to remarry! "
This left him in thoughts, "I too had similar cases in Lucknow! But then I did not see it as a pattern..
She simply nodded slightly.
"So?" he asked.
"so nothing. I have to get this lady the fattest alimony I possibly can." she said dismally.
"And you don't like it?"
"Not one bit! But, heck, it's a part of my job, so I will do it and do it well." She shrugged , got up and started walking out.
"Can't you lose this case?" he suggested.
She turned sharply, "Are you out of your mind?"
He said lightly, "oh I know your track record is 100%, but at least you will be able to face yourself, even with a 99% or 98% track record",
She looked at him indignantly, "Its not about my track record. This firm has a reputation of winning 99.99% of its cases. You know they show you the door if you lose 2 cases and this is a fairly simple case, so everyone will know. And who knows the client can end up suing our firm too!"
"okay, you don't have to do anything. I will do something"
By now she was angry, "wjho do you think you are? Robin Hood? Every time I share something you don't have to jump chanting - I can help I can help! Stop meddling in my matters and mind your cases!"
She left his cabin in a huff.
He looked at her receding form, thought deeply for a while and said softly though no one was around to listen, "there's no point working on this case Radhika. By the next hearing you won't have this case!"
