The Reality Behind Reality Shows - Rakhi Sawant's Defeat

December 27, 2007
Sakshi Juneja

My favorite Jodi No. 3 aka Rakhi Sawant and her beau Abhishek Awasthi missed out on winning the Nach Baliye crown. Small screen starlets Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aamir Ali walked away with first prize of Rs.2 million, a car and their choreographers Arun and Chetan won Rs.1 million.

No sooner the results were out my cell phone practically went in frenzy mode; text messages, emails and comments on posts related to Rakhi Sawant & Nach Baliye. All wanting to know how the fan was coping with her icon's loss, some were even expecting a venomous post in retaliation. But honestly speaking, I really don't give a flying f**k. And no, it's not the "grapes are sour" sort-ta emotion. In fact I didn't even watch the finale episode; I was out with friends having a blast while Madam Sawant was shedding (allegedly) crocodile tears. One can even measure my indifference by the fact that I didn't watch it even for my darling Sallu (Salman Khan).

So the question here is – If I don't give a shit, why the heck am I writing a post about it?

To which my reply is – This post is for those speculating my sudden change of mindset when just the other day I was urging my blog readers to vote for Rakhi.

In all honesty, once again, yes I did wish for Sawant to win just as I did when she was called back in Bigg Boss House; not only because I am a fan but also because I truly believed she deserved to win on both occasions. But if you are familiar with the workings of the Indian Television Industry and take into account the results of other similar reality shows, it isn't hard enough to figure out that "manipulation" is the ONLY final outcome.

Nope, I am not following Rakhi's lead here. Like you I too believe the woman is creating hubala hoo just to appease her controversial nature. But then again why shouldn't she? Don't many of our well-known Bollywood celebrities follow similar tactics! Then why should she be singled out and tagged as "Dramebazz".

To further elaborate my point, here are some of the reasons why I believe Jodi No. 3 were never in the running for Nach Baliye title.

1. The weeks before the finale an inside source had revealed the results to me. Her precise words were, "Rakhi will reach the finals but not win". Now it's a different thing that I didn't pay attention to it. Rumours and Gossips are part and parcel of the Entertainment Industry.

2. It's no hidden fact – Rakhi was only welcomed in the show for TRP reasons. Koffee with Karan episode featuring the Item Queen is what sealed the above decision.

3. Kashmeera Shah was included only to further spice up the drama effect.

4. If you look at the recent result of the rival show Jhalak Dikhlaja 2, even a 3rd degree moron would be able to figure out that Snooty Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Balaji Productions had a major role to play in Prachi Desia's victory. Similarly, Nach Baliye 3's winning couple too happen to be in Ekta Mata's paltu pet list.

5. Besides upper-hand influence, by declaring their own daily soap actors as winners, network channels tend to gain a lot in terms of TRPs, show popularity, news publicity, etc.

6. Perfect example of the above – Mona Singh winning over Shweta Salve in Jhalak Dikhlaja Season 1. Mona Singh had then just finished Sony's popular tele-show, "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin". Also if rumours are to be believed, Sony was looking for a perfect platform to re-launch Mona Singh, since they wanted to make her the front face of the channel.

7. The notion that Reality Show judges only play a small role and everything rests with the audience - this is nothing but a popular misconception.

And I could go on and on and on, by citing examples of other Reality Shows like Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, Indian Idol 3, Amul Star Voice of India, etc but I won't (since I do believe you folks are smart enough to understand my point).

Final Conclusion – As a Rakhi Sawant fan, I am happy despite her loss because I have full faith in her ability to milk out every drop of opportunity from this defeat, be it terms of popularity, future project offers and money.

However as a devoted desi-dabba viewer, I feel cheated; so no more SMS voting for me from here on.

I agree with all of it but i don't agree that Rakhi is making a big chaos just for publicity. Why shouldn't she pursue and fight for her right, she has worked hard for it and I believe she doesn't like anyone using her. She has the right to fight if she thinks wrong is being done to her. I support her. Sometimes a genuine person looks wrong if he fights the system.

What you said may be true.....'cos nobody knows the way the entertainment industry works and yes, I have seen many reality shows wherein the more deserving person has been left behind...but yet again, thats the reality of a reality show - that people may vote according to who they like and sometimes it may not be the talent, but may be their persona.

Having said that, you have to agree that the way R-A reacted was very much in poor taste! You don't insult, by walking out, but accept gracefully....which is something which all the finalists in all the other shows did! So yes, in this case A-S were way way way ahead in their humility which R-A totally lacked.
