The opening response of the Diwali clashes has gone in the favour of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Below are the first show figures from some centres. Mumbai and Delhi are metros, Chandigarh is a mini metro while Nagpur is an A centre so the numbers are from main centres. If we go down in to smaller centres that have just a one or two theatre release like a Jhansi, Kamptee, Ganganagar, Dausa etc then Shivaay does lead but this like by 20 or 30 admits and the shortfall coming from the main centres across India is too big for it to make any worthwhile dent. Below are the admit figures of first shows with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city..
Mumbai (40 Cinemas)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 5039 admits
Shivaay - 1934 admits
Delhi (25 cinemas)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 3477 admits
Shivaay - 1386 admits
Chandigarh (8 Cinemas)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 1136 admits
Shivaay - 401 admits
Nagpur (ADHM - 7 cinemas Shivaay - 8 cinemas)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 815 admits
Shivaay - 738 admits
TOTAL
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 10,467 admits
Shivaay - 4,459 admits
The smaller centre response is better for Shivaay than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil but that is expected due to genre. These centres have not really fired and though Shivaay is better, the collections are not high but on Monday these will see the crowds come back in a big way. Despite the lead in smaller centres the overall collections of Shivaay will remain well short of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil due to the big gaps in the A centres. Below are some figures from smaller centres from circuits like Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI and Bihar. The pattern in all smaller cities of these circuits is similar.
Sikar (Rajasthan) Miraj Cinema
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 11,146 (113 admits)
Shivaay - 23,407 (251 admits)
Sikar (Rajsthan) Galaxy Cinema
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 19,814 (186 admits)
Shivaay - 52,145 (512 admits)
Amravati (CP Berar)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 3,265 (41 admits)
Shivaay - 16,994 (237 admits)
Ujjain (CI)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 14,620
Shivaay - 18,096
Sitamani (Bihar)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - 4,398 (1 cinema)
Shivaay - 21,500 (3 cinemas)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has opened well at the box office despite the clash with Shivaay. The initial is around 35-40% on average which is actually good if you consider its pre Diwali. The film is being led by the high end multiplexes and some of these even managed to take a 50% start. If it was a normal day it would be putting up a strong first number as city youth has come initially but with pre Diwali its hard to tell how much of the evening audience will come out. The anti Pakistan wave across the country does not seem to have affected the film. There was a similar type of issue when the Shahrukh Khan starrer Dilwale released and markets like North, Central and Gujarat under performed very badly. Here North and Gujarat seem fine while Central was anyway not expected to be good for this type of film. Though the weekend and Monday collections will tell more.
>Shivaay has taken a lower opening at around 25% as its business at multiplexes in most parts of the country is lower than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The film despite being an action film is hit much more than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil by pre Diwali as the mass markets remain very low till Monday. The Muslim mass centres in places like UP and Gujarat could have opened better as they are less into Diwali festivities but the film has a name like Shivaay which probably takes some of the audience away in these centres. The film will find it tough going until the audience comes back at these mass centres on Monday and then teh film will need the reports to be good enough to get the full benefit of the big holiday period.
