Miss Mary has the answer to all questions and can find solutions to all problems ... except the najayaz situation.

Miss Mary never mentioned 'najayaz'. So, this was a new word for Avni. Initially she had difficulty in pronouncing it, but with a little practice - she got it right. However, she did not know its meaning!

Avni did not know who would help her understand the meaning of 'najayaz'. Why did she not think of asking Miss Mary? Surely, her guide, Miss Mary would help her understand the word and handle the situation she was in? But - our smart and cute Avni did not think of consulting Miss Mary. Did Avni think that it would be improper to mention such a word in front of Miss Mary? Was Avni afraid that Miss Mary would have a bad impression of her if she told her the truth that was troubling her?

Hmmm... I wonder

The Miss. Mary dialogue is a direct inspiration of "Miss. Lucy kehti hai" often said by Chukti (Pooja Ruparel), Simran's (Kajol) sister in DDLJ!!!!😛 😛 😛

It actually has no significance in the story!!!!🤔

I have not watched DDLJ. It is highly likely that you are right. However, I do think there is something more to it - because Mahesh Bhatt attended a catholic boys school. As per the internet he studied at Don Bosco High School, Wadala (?not sure), Mumbai.

Catholic schools are reputed to be moralistic - so I speculate that 'Miss Mary' is probably indicating the "highly" moralistic ideals that are being brainwashed into Avni. And this is being portrayed to show the contrast between Avni and her parents!

Avni does seem very influenced by Miss Mary 😆 At that age, most children believe their teachers are the epitome of intelligence, morals and wisdom. And when it comes to the favourite teacher, the child will always want to make the best possible impression. So I feel Avni might go to Miss Mary with doubts about many things, but she will never go to her and bring up a word that she instinctively knows is 'bad' 🤔 Your point about the contrast between the strict morals at school and the situation at Avni's house is very valid.
