An aghast Bhishma questioned him, "How can you take up arms, Krishna, you vowed not to do so. Is your action not against dharma?

Lord Krishna is purported to have replied, "vows carry significance only in relative terms, when the circumstances change, sticking to one's vows is foolhardiness. After your father's death, when your mother, Satyavati, herself pleaded with you to set aside your vow of celibacy, it was not dharma that made you refuse but your sense of ego. And that refusal is precisely the reason why we are here, at this battlefield. And in the battlefield, it is one's dharma to wage a war, if Arjun does not, as his charioteer, I shall. That is Dharma "

And indeed, we use the words Bhishma Pratignya and Dharmayudh so easily, without pausing to think what they actually mean.
