Movie Review: Mirzya... Visually Gorgeous But Too Arty For Comfort

On the positive side, this love story introduces the gifted newcomers Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher

Movie Review: Mirzya
WOW
LOL
W*F
OMG

Two and a half stars.jpg

Blow hot, blow cold. Chilly Ladakh icescapes are contrasted with the sun fried vistas of desert lands. Horses neigh, furry birds are felled by special-effects bows-and-arrows, a VFX snow leopard snarls, bespoke ghagras swirl, chorus dancers are in a permanent state of twirl, and the Rajasthani havelis are bedecked with flowers and beauteous bric-a-brac. All quite, visually sumptuous.

Sadly the slim content doesn't quite match the overloaded style, reducing the legendary Mirza-Sahiban legend into a barely sufferable yawn fest. Even at a running time of merely two hours-and-some minutes, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Mirzya, scripted by Gulzar no less, taxes your patience. To say that the storytelling lacks soul would be too simplistic.

To me it looks like a classic case of love's labour squandered. At innumerable junctures, you can sense that Mehra and Co. are striving to rise above the commonplace, broaching the subject as a magical, mystical tour, alloying a bygone era with the contemporary here and now.

The Mirzya.jpg

Sorry but the restless shifts from the distant past to the present - emphasising the point that love continues to be a many-hazardous thing, especially if a couple belongs to disparate social strata -- doesn't quite gel. Overall, the outcome is choppy, incoherent and more artsy than absorbing, prompting you to check if your wrist-watch needs a battery replacement.

The timeless past is vivified by a Games of Throne-style combat -- at a bird hunt --between the all-powerful potentates and a scruffy archer from the wrong side of the snow-tracks. No medallions for guessing who wins. Finito. A princess, apparently the chief guest at the event, and the archer fall in love. Oh oh, that spells doom-and-gloom.

Zip zap. Cut to aaj kal ka Rajasthan where childhood sweethearts, Suchitra and Munish bond over laddoos in the school classroom. Not done. The cherubs are pulled up by a teacher for goofing on their homework. Next: in a fit of hyper rage, the pre-teen Munish shoots the teacher fatally with a pistol and is trucked to a remand home. Rightfully so methinks. Hum-ho.

Mirzya.jpg

Smartly, Boy Munish escapes from the remand home, courtesy a guard whose attention is diverted by a football game. Really. Anyway whatever, years later Munish has grown up under the benign care of a Muslim Chacha Rahim-type of ironsmith (Om Puri in a half-hammered role), has been renamed Adil and serves as a stable-boy at the nearby royal palace. Erm, you know what to expect. In the tradition of that vintage song, "Bachpan ke din kabhi bhoola na dena", Adil (Harshvardhan Kapoor) and Suchitra (Saiyami Kher) meet up again to assert that there's nothing quite as potent as one's first love. Right.

Only, it's emphasised that Suchitraji's the daughter of a Shakespeare-spouting ex-police commissioner (Art Malik) and Adil bhai's merely abechara menial. Recognising each other thanks to their body tattoos, Adil and Suchitra are now in the throes of passion (read torrid smooches), a twist in the plot which leaves Suchi's blue-blooded fianc Karan (Anuj Choudhry) out in the cold. He's outraged, he trembles. By contrast the poor village girl (Anjali Patil) who adores Adil, doesn't. She's the sacrificial sort you see, there to resort to extreme measures before the climax unspools. Cool?

Hardly, the plot lacks surprises. If there's any novel element at all it's those segments from the past popping up to theorise that romance is no bed of roses since the lord-knows-how-many-centuries. Come to think of it, if those allegorical flashbacks (if they can be called that) were to be excised, it wouldn't make a whit of a difference.

Here's a device which was used splendidly by Harold Pinter's script for The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), adapted from the John Fowles novel. Here the intercutting parallels between the then and now, point towards the reincarnation theme, abstrusely. Lingering shots of an ancient wall fresco, showing a semi-abstract artwork, hardly help the credibility factor.

Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher.jpg

Undeniably, Mehra is a master craftsman. The shot takings are awesome and the colour palate a banquet for the eyes. Polish cinematographer Pawel Dyllus' lensing is of the highest order. Not so Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's folksy, ethnic music score which is blasted from the speakers relentlessly. As for the stylised choreography it seems to be straight out of an experimental stage musical, with slithering limbs and pretzel bodies , not to forget a dash of erotica.

Okay, so what about the lead pair who make their debuts? Despite the disappointing film, Harshvardhan Kapoor establishes an iron-strong screen presence. Unconventional and intelligent, he doesn't play to the gallery at all, opting for an intensity which hasn't been seen in years. Communicating with his piercing eyes and silences, clearly a star-actor is born. A long-distance runner, he avoids a first-timer's mandatory display of dancing skills and excessive body display. Rather he internalises his character to the point of implosiveness.

Newcomer Saiyami Kher is more than a welcome addition to the league of extraordinary young heroines, conveying the vulnerability of a girl-woman caught in a world not of her making. Fingers crossed, she should go places. Of the supporting ensemble, Art Malik, Anuj Choudhry and Anjali Patil are impressive.

Now you might wonder how Harshvardhan and Saiyami can be impactful if the rest of Mirzya is off-putting? Just goes to affirm the freshness and conviction they place in their roles. In the event, you do connect with their acting sparks. Nothing can stop them from going beyond Mirzya.

All said and endured, you might want to know whether to see or not to see. To check out the newcomers and the technical razzle-dazzle, why not? For the rest of Mirzya, go at your own peril.

No surprises. This review is more or less what I expected. The movie is trying too hard to look intelligent and artsy I guess. Pretty sure it will flop.😆
But it's nice to see that the reviewer liked and praised both the actors. Hopefully they are worthy of that praise and establish themselves soon! Cheering for them 👍🏼

The lead pair Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor aren't very successful at bringing the urgency, turmoil or drama behind forbidden love

Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Senior Reporter
15:53 October 6, 2016
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Mirzya is visually spectacular, but it's also spectacularly stupid when it comes to dealing with star-crossed lovers. Is tragedy and fatal injury the only way to legitimise true love?

Based on the Punjabi folklore Mirza-Sahiba (think an Indian version of Romeo & Juliet, but with protagonists who are exponentially self-destructive), new actors Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor play the doomed couple.

Two love stories set in different eras play out in the highly poetic Mirzya. The first is set in the ancient times where clan wars and men on horseback battling with bows and arrows are common and the other is a forbidden courtship is set in the contemporary times where a modern prince has created a business empire by converting his palace into a hotel.

Watch: The #bollywood #review of @mirzya starring Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor by Manjusha Radhakrishnan, senior reporter

He's betrothed to a luminous beauty, Suchitra (Kher), but she falls in love with the stable boy, Adil Mirza, played by shabby-chic Kapoor. Societal class distinctions are weirdly romanticised during these scenes.

While Anil Kapoor's son displays sparks of brilliance and emotes effectively with his eyes, it's Kher, Shabana Azmi and Tanvi Azmi's niece, who shines in the film. She's a pleasure to watch and brings out the pathos of loving somebody beneath her station. She has a star quality that makes you invested in her.

Plus, the lead pair aren't very successful at bringing the urgency, turmoil or drama behind forbidden love. Kapoor, despite looking haggard and torn, doesn't connect. But Kher does better.

The way Mehra has juxtaposed these two love stories is interesting and introduces a novel way of story-telling. The recurring title score of Mirzya is haunting and some of the romantic scenes are poetry in motion. But it's the content that jars.

I can understand why the lovers met a fatal end in an archaic period, but was there a need for that blood bath among the modern family members who seem reasonable, progressive and capable of rationalising matters?

Watch Mirzya if you have a penchant for folk tales, poetry and mysticism. This grand love tragedy requires you to show a willingness to be transported to a land where lovers are skittish and crazy.

What's Good: The stunning visuals and horse riding long shots are excellent. Editing too is top notch.

What's Bad: As a piece of content, Mirzya has little to offer. It is poetic but fails to connect with the viewers at many levels.

Loo Break: Yes! When Daler Mehendi's vocals are tearing your ears apart.

Watch or Not?: Mirzya is a film for a niche audience. People who enjoy poetry in motion, this film is exactly that. For those who prefer frothy love stories, this intense affair may bore you out.

Based on the Punjabi folk legend, the love story of star crossed lovers Mirza Sahiban, this film is divided into two eras.

One where, through horse-back riding and shooting arrows, Mirza tries to win Sahiban by competing with her brothers.

In contemporary times, Suchi/Suchitra (Saiyami Kher) and Monish (Harshvrdhan Kapoor) are childhood friends until a gruesome crime tears them apart. Years later, Suchi returns to India for her engagement to a royal prince, Karan (Anuj Choudhary), only to fall in love and rekindle her friendship with the stable boy, Adil who is actually Monish.

With the class difference and the horrific past, can Suchi and Monish's love survive? What is the legend of Mirza-Sahiban all about?

Mirzya Review: Script Analysis
There had been a lot of expectations from Mirzya considering, the screenplay has been written by Gulzar. The man is known to write even silences that convey way more than words. Re-telling the Romeo-Juliet's Indian version, the film communicates more in the verses narrated and songs than in casual dialogue.

The lyrical narrative of the film is difficult for everyone to fathom. Also while the folk tale makes sense, its modern day take seems too archaic. Not all love stories that are meant to be legends need to have tragic climaxes. It would have been wiser if Mehra would have seeked a contemporary ending to a contemporary tale.

The narrative is pretty much broadway musical or ballet recital style where we see colorful Rajasthani groups singing about what's about to happen next.

For a story that is anchored to the two lovers Suchitra and Monish, there is hardly any dialogue to give them a strong footing as characters. For the bygone era it is easily palatable but the new age love angle contrived at many junctures.

There is a level of disappointment in the script since we rarely feel the passion that Suchi and Monish are supposed to have. It is at this point one realizes that with a similar tragic love story, the reason Marathi movie Sairaat won over everyone was its sparky dialogue which Mirzya lacks.

The first half hardly establishes anything as it moves on a very slow speed, in spite of having breathtaking visuals, one particularly feels this because there is slow growth on the story side.

Mirzya Review: Star Performance
This is supposed to be Harshvardhan Kapoor's big Bollywood debut. Unfortunately, he does not get much to show off his acting chops. Although with that haggard look of the stable boy, he surely does impress. His horse-riding portions prove he has put in ample of hardwork. This Kapoor lad is definitely here to stay.

Saiyami Kher looks luminous in the film. The challenge for both debutantes in the film is to emote without much dialogues and this is where Kher is not really her best.

Anuj Chaudhary who plays Saiyami's fiance does an extremely impressive job. Not only is his royal demeanor highly likable, his sudden transition into a grey shade character is marvelous.

Amongst the supporting cast, Art Malik does a great job.

Om Puri has a cameo which does not contribute much.

Mirzya Review: Direction, Music
The direction and cinematography department is where the film truly excels. Mehra proves to be a true story-teller and his inspiration from Greek tragedy, (a peculiar form of theatre) is quite evident. With Gulzar's magnificent words at his hands, Mehra's Mirzya falls short of becoming a masterpiece thanks to its non-commercial music and a strong plot.

The cinematography comprising of Ladakh's beautiful landscapes to the colorful Rajasthani folk flavor and also, Udaipur's plush palaces is absolutely stunning.

VFX is another department where this film is pulled down. In the scenes comprising of fireballs being hit by arrows and also a leopard attack, the visual effects of poor quality lose the impact.

Also, the languid pace of the film is surely going to be a test of everyone's patience.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Daler Mehendi's music does not always hit the right notes. Chakora is weirdly trippy and the video is too confusing. On the other hand, Daler Mehendi's screeching vocals in a rather sad scene are a complete mood-killer.

All in all, Mehra's Mirzya goes overboard with its experimental nature and cannot appeal to all.

Mirzya Review: The Last Word
Mirzya is a dramatic, poetic and visually aesthetic yet fails to blow you away. A 2.5/5 for this!

Mirzya and MSG The Warrior-Lion Heart box office clash: Which one will come up victorious?
Mirzya is an epic fantasy, romantic thriller for which Gulzar has written the story, which is based on the Punjabi folklore of the tragic romances of Mirza-Sahiban. The movie deals with the story of the star-crossed lovers, which is set in two parallel worlds -- real and fantastical. The lovers grapple with forces that seek to keep them apart in both the avatars. They discover that even a moment of true love is worth an entire lifetime.
Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, who have made their acting debut in Bollywood with this flick, have played the lead pair in Mirzya and they have delivered decent performances in the movie. The sizzling chemistry between the couple is the highlight of the film. Anuj Choudhry, Om Puri, Art Malik, KK Raina, and Anjali Patil, who are seen in pivotal roles, are also assets of this flick.
Mirzya has brilliant production values that are on par with Hollywood standards. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's amazing music, Pawe Dyllus' stunning visuals, superb choreography of action scenes and brilliant storytelling are the attractions on the technical front, say the viewers. We bring you some film-goers' verdict shared on Twitter and Facebook.

Saw #Mirzya : A lyrical affair which is rarity in current times. Manner in which folklore & contemporary times amalgamate catches attention. #Mirzya - @RakeyshOmMehra ensures that for @HarshKapoor_ & @SaiyamiKher, it is a launch which they can leverage and build their career. #Mirzya - It has a truly unique narrative and for those conditioned to quintessential Bollywood scheme of things, it takes time to settle. #Mirzya - While 1st half settles down gradually, 2nd half truly fires well. Especially last 30 mins emotionally choke u with drama & tragedy. #Mirzya - Best part(s) of the film are the sequences set in Ladakh during folklore. Visuals, action and storytelling are exemplary there. #Mirzya - There are too many songs though & the Rajasthan exotic dance narrative goes a little overboard at places. It is way too different. #Mirzya - @HarshKapoor_ gets a debut that is unconventional, yet impressive. It's unique. The youngster shows he can emote across dimensions #Mirzya - @SaiyamiKher is a natural. Convincing as today's girl next door, princess from a different world, an exotic woman from another era
