Hey!

I went on to the videos for UnIndian and saw all sorts of uncharitable comments for Tannishtha Chatterjee- the protagonist.

Things like "She looks like my maid", "India mein aur koi gori ladki nahi mili kya inhe", "They should have taken a more beautiful girl to represent India" etc

Let's assume that they think she is not good-looking. Does it mean that average looking girls don't have a right to be on screen? Are only good-looking models allowed?

Unless they're playing poor people, I very rarely see such faces in films-

Image result for indian people

Image result for indian child

It seems like light skin is equated with being rich and dark skin with being poor. Nandita Das said in one of her interviews that when she was supposed to be playing an upper class woman, the director asked her if he could lighten her. Pooja Bhatt said that when she told someone she had cast Richa Chaddha in Cabaret, she was told, "Yeh gareeb dikhti hai".

Do people not wanna see 'Indian' faces on screen? Do we only wanna see half-white or white people like Katrina Kaif? Or people like Aish who look mixed or miscellaneous?

What is your opinion on this?

I agree Bollywood obsessed with fair skin.
Background dancer bhi white ladkiyan hoti hain chahe gana India main hi shoot kiya gaya ho.
Aur ye comments aam hai.
Ek saal pehle maine ek thread banayi thi UNIndian pey usime maine likha tha ki jyadatar Indian girls usike jaisa hi dikhtey hain.I said I apreciate Frieda Pinto also and Frieda Pinto ke bare main bhi same comments atey hain.

Deepika's face is Indian and she is a super successful actress but yeah it's sad that it's such a rarity.

True. Everyone is part of this.

Nawazuddin Siqqiqui also gets these type of comments.

Hollywood is not like that. Actors there do look like people you see on the street and we should learn to be proud of ourselves from them.

Yeah, I was talking about the general trend. Even Deepika has been lightened to the moon and back now.

I see how kids are cast as well and there are briefs like, "rich looking kid". Wonder what impact it has on their self-esteem.

Cinema reflects the society. Skin colour, the whole appeal of KJO's movies which are super exaggerated ..all sell because thats what society seems to aspire. It is indeed sad and too deep rooted to just expect cinema to sort this perception battle. Reminds me of Rishi's comment about Nawaz how the latter can never dance around the trees with a face like that. People want to see larger than life version of their aspirations and beautiful people ( that comes from their social prejudices)

HW is same, if not more , Jesse Williams -BET speech. Viola Devis has spoken about representation, body perceptions. Just their industry is big..we have a very different view point . Mindy, Aziz have now broken there after so many years and they are lauded just as Nawaz, Irfan, Vidya are in BW.

I agree they sometimes do that, but why are we so afraid of seeing average looking people on screen?

UnIndian is a story of a girl and boy who fell in love despite cultural differences. This can happen to anyone. They don't necessarily have to be beautiful. A lot of Indian girls look like Tannishtha. Maybe they will be happy to see someone who looks like them on screen.

I have seen many boys and girls who are so embarrassed of the way they look, they don't even want to update their FB profile pictures. It's sad that they are made to feel like that.

Hey!

Thanks a lot. 😃

I totally agree with what you said. Cinema does reflect what society aspires to be and in our society, we don't wanna see reality on screen because it makes us uncomfortable. It makes us confront the prejudices which we would rather pretend don't exist.

Since they are more developed societies, I feel HW movies are realistic because the audience is not so dissatisfied with their own reality as to not want to watch it on screen. Many people here say they watch movies as an escape from reality. I wish the pace of development and social change hastens so that people become more comfortable with who they are.

See so many people who feel inferior because of their looks, race, caste, social standing etc. They need to be told they're not inferior to anyone else.

It's only when we as Indians have self-confidence in ourselves that we will be happy to see people who look like us on screen.
