'Freaky Ali' Is A Must Watch Thanks To An Exceptional Nawazuddin Siddiqui

by Rajyasree Sen

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. But it seems that I have not just sat through an entire film directed and written by Sohail Khan and starring Arbaaz Khan, but actually enjoyed it. This of course is largely due to the fact that Freaky Ali also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who I think is a national treasure.

I've been quite intrigued about Freaky Ali, ever since I saw the trailer and realised that the Khan family in their wisdom, had made a full film revolving around golf. A sport which most film-watching Indians do not know of, nor play. For no other reason than that most Indians do not have access to a golf course. Which made me question why the Khans, who are known for their crowd-pleaser masalafilms, would make a film which wouldn't appeal to their mainstay audience.

But it seems that one must not disregard Salim Khan's genes, which have - contrary to popular belief - seemingly penetrated into Sohail Khan's scriptwriting prowess. Freaky Ali has packed in everything that's required to be a crowd-puller, according to me.

There's the rich vs poor man struggle, integrity winning out over bravado, maa ki mamta, sport, a villain, the underdog winning purely on skill and dint of spirit, the poor dark man getting the rich fair girl with a heart of gold, divine intervention - and there's a surprise guest star.

Stills from the film | Source: Facebook

The story is essentially about two small-time thugs, Nawazuddin (Ali) and Arbaaz who extort money/ hafta from residents for the don in their area. The don is played by Niketan Dheer and is called Danger Bhai. Nawazuddin and Arbaaz go to a golf course to take their hafta from a golfer, who's called them there. Nawazuddin keeps making fun of the golfer and how he can't seem to hit a ball straight, till the golfer asks him to try hitting a shot. Only to discover that Nawazuddin is a natural. He then decides to train Nawazuddin to play professionally. Seema Biswas plays Nawaz's mother - and my heart did break a little when I saw her dance to a very badly composed song, and I thought even Phoolan Devi needs to do commercial cinema to make ends meet.

There's of course a lot of not-so funny humour, such as the aforementioned Danger Bhai's name, but there are some fun bits also. Like when Nawaz is playing cricket in his slum and refers to the bowler, who has leucoderma, as "nakli Brett Lee". The entrance of the surprise guest, whose name I won't give away, since readers are so sensitive, is quite hilarious. The clincher of the film though, is Nawzuddin, who is an actor extraordinaire and fits the role of themoholle ka gunda-but-perfect son-turned-skilled-golfer perfectly. Too bad Salman Khan forgot his name twice over at the Freaky Ali press conference.

The USP of the film though, is the golf. And the attention to detail in how it's shown. I was quite sure that the Khan-daan would get the nuances of the game absolutely wrong. Because anyway, who'd know any better? But for a change, Bollywood has actually brought on board a specialist to teach the actors and film-makers the sport they're showing in the film. And the golf consultant, Sidharth Arora hasn't taken them for a ride. The scenes of Nawazuddin playing his first few shots in his chappals reminded me of all the caddies who are exceptional players, and train most people starting out in the game.

Nawazuddin gets every shot correct, every posture perfect, his grip is never incorrect and most importantly, and I confirmed this with pro-am golfers I know, his finish is better than most golfers who've been playing for years. He's got nuances which most players are forever trying to get right, like the perfect swivel, absolutely spot on. We've seen Anil Kapoor and various other stars playing golf on screen, and no one has got their style as right as Nawazuddin.

The sequences of the game are simply stunning. The drives, the shanks, the duffing of shots in the bunker, the hazard of hitting a ball into the hazards - and the joy of the hole in one. For golfers or people who like watching golf, this movie is worth a watch simply for the attention to detail to the game. It's also good to see that Sohail Khan - or whoever deserves credit for it - realises the importance of a caddy to a golfer's game.

Team 'Freaky Ali '

This is a film with ample dosage of masala and poor Jas Arora portrays the worst kind of villain - the rich, spoilt, entitled brat. Who can also play a mean game of golf. His dialogues are so over the top, that they have Nawazuddin ask him why he spouts nonsense like - "yeh ameeron ka khel hai, gareebon ka nahin". (This is a rich man's game, not a poor man's.) As Nawazuddin asks him, who speaks like that?

But all the drama and nonsense, like Nawazuddin's neighbours from the slum running up and down the greens to cheer him or playing drums through the championships - pales into the background when Nawazuddin appears on screen and the focus is on the golf.

I do think that they could have explained the game and its scoring slightly, because the audience are left to figure it out on their own. But the film's two stars are Nawazuddin and the game of golf. Watch it. It's a fun watch. Just don't go expecting to watch Tin Cup or even Happy Gilmore. And definitely don't go expecting Do Bigha Zameen. It's a Hindi film, masala aur golf maar ke. Take it for what it is.

Freaky Ali Movie Review

Quirky Script backed with incredible performance of Siddiqui will make you laugh a loud

This Friday we have two films releasing, which certainly include the sports rom com movie called Freaky Ali. The film is directed, written and produced by one man called Sohail Khan under the his own banner called Sohail Khan Productionz, while Nishant Pitti is also the co-producer of the same. The dialogues have been jotted down by Raaj Shanndhilyaa. The film is loosely based on the 1996 American comedy movie called Happy Gilmore. The film has Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role along with Arbaaz Khan and Amy Jackson in the pivotal roles. The others like Jas Arora, Seema Biswas and Nikitin Dheer are seen in the supporting roles. The others include Asif Basra, Paresh Ganatra and Alam Khan is also seen in various roles in the film. Now, let's dig in deep to get the crux of the movie in the following paragraphs:

Plot

Ali who happens to be an extortion debt collector is played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui for a local good called Maqsood played by Arbaaz Khan. His luck gets a U-turn when he and his boss (Maqsoon) visits a golf course to collect the extortion money after waiting for some time for a man who has not given them the money. He then confronts the man there who ask him to wait till he is seen finishing the game of golf by putting the ball in the right hole. Ali calls the game to be damn simple and then is challenged by the man, which he manages to put the ball in the hole in just one short. He then realizes that its hidden talent to play the sports of golf and then rest becomes history as he leaves his life of odd jobs behind to become the new sensation in the sports. Amidst all this, he meets his dream girl Megha played by Amy Jackson and wins her heart. So, what happens the next is interesting to catch in the film.

Review

Amidst the trend of making sports biopic, you have the man Sohail Khan who makes a sports based film with a twist. He has smartly jotted down a story keeping a man at the center with different shades right from a salesman to an assistant to a local goon who collects extortion debts from people. The film may have a couple of factual errors as it is not that simple for anyone becoming a sportsman overnight that too with sports like golf, which is often called as a rich man's game. Yet in terms of humor and story of B Town one can digest such script to some extent. However, when it comes with ace performances from actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, it becomes worthy to pursue. The script gives enough opportunities to laugh a loud making the audience sticks to their chairs for long laughing and giggling too often in the movie.

In terms of performance, no one can beat Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He is simply awesome in the role of a man who is at the center playing the character of a golfer by chance. We see this man in a sports avatar the first time with humor in his tongue and smile on other faces, quirky dialogues and cool actions lead the film to draw a good buzz for it. Nawaz has been incredible in his roles, be it the man in Manjhi the Mountain Man film or in Raghav Raman 2.0, he is simply incredible and has taken all the pain to enter into the character of the film in a very skillful fashion. The others in the film like Amy Jackson who is the leading lady in it, but she has a small screen presence which she has failed to portray her skills over the silver screen as it deserves to do that. The others like Jas Arora, Seema Biswas and Nikitin Dheer are okay and have done justice to their character but in many ways were overshadowed by Siddiqui in a big way.

Direction, Music, Screenplay and editing

The film has not much to do the direction as it has one of the best actors in B Town who leaves no stone unturned to keep things par. The direction is okay for the film both in terms of a quirky script and performances yet can be blamed to have certain factual errors in it. Music is okay though not that par, which could have been regarded as the secondary element to make the film bigger and better. The other elements like screenplay, editing and photography seemed par as required, which somehow has helped the film to do better. The other technical elements are okay, which again contribute to some extent to the story and presentation of the film.

Freaky Ali - Last Word

The film has a quirky element having Nawazuddin Siddiqui at the center. The film though has a simple and straightforward script but the way it has helped the movie to reach to its height can make things very much different. After all it is supported by the powerful performance of the actor Siddiqui, which he himself is more than enough to carry forward the film in a right direction.

Rating - 3.5

Freaky Ali Review: Nawazuddin Is Freakishly Funny In This Amusing Underdog Tale

Lighthearted, consistently funny, and carried on the back of a thoroughly charming performance by its leading man, Freaky Ali is the perfect example of a film that offers breezy entertainment from start to finish while also having the smarts to never reach beyond the limitations of its script. Credit for this needs to be given to Director Sohail Khan (making a comeback after the subpar Jai Ho), who shows that the sparks displayed in Auzaar and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya back in the late 90s still flicker in him. The story of the underdog has been portrayed several times before on celluloid, but never has it been treated so informally; almost resonating with the film's main theme that no sport can every carry an elitist tag because all it takes to make your mark is talent and commitment.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays the eponymous Ali, is a down-on-his-luck underwear salesman and passionate gully cricketer, who joins local goon Maqsood (Arbaaz Khan) in an extortion racket after his roadside stall shuts down. This allows for a few comedic interludes between Maqsood and Ali as they go about their vasooli business, with bumbling results. Though these moments offer a few laughs, they're owed completely to Nawaz, who almost has to carry Arbaaz in their scenes together.

Also read: What nawazuddin will ne taking back from Freaky Ali

One day, they land at a golf course to collect a debt from a big shot, and Ali, who loves shooting his mouth off as much as he enjoys hitting huge sixes in his ghetto, passes a couple of critical remarks on the guy's inability to land the ball in the hole' (pun intended). Infuriated at being chided by a lowly extortionist, the businessman challenges him to put his money where his mouth is. Every dog has his day, and this one turns out to be Ali's turning point - he swings the club, whacks the ball, lands in the hole miles away, and leaves everyone stunned, but none more than the big shot's caddie, Kishan Lal (Asif Basra), who incidentally, is also a friend of Ali's mom, played by Seema Biswas. Spotting his latent talent, Kishan keeps urging Ali to take up golf seriously, despite Ali's initial reluctance and Maqsood's reservations. After this begins a simple yet funny underdog yarn of a commoner, who turns into a national sensation, by breaking all preconceived rules of a sport that has always been associated with the elite.

There are several heartwarming moments in Freaky Ali like how Nawaz's natural bat swing in cricket helps him give the golf ball an almighty thump or how his rise to the top drives interest for golf among everyone from tea vendors to galli ka taporis. His scenes during training with Basra and every time he keeps defeating one snob after another on the green acres are a total hoot. However, the narrative pauses intermittently for romantic relief courtesy Ali's love-interest Megha, played by Amy Jackson, and it's here where the pace dips and our interest wavers. Her character of a wealthy yet kind-hearted soul is a total clich and she has zero chemistry with Nawaz. The three songs, too, do nothing to salvage their romance. Also, though the comedy works in most places, you do get the feeling that Raaj Shaandilyaa's script tried too hard to make every moment laugh-out-loud funny, which causes some of the dialogues and scenes to appear forced rather than naturally funny.

Also watch: Salman Khan's shout out for Freaky Ali

However, never fear when Nawaz is near. This man can do anything, period. How he's gone from a deranged psychopath to an adorable simpleton, with balls of steel, within a span of two film beats the hell out of me. Every time the script lags or there's a clichd moment, Nawaz is there to brush it all away, even when Jas Arora threatens to derail everything with his almost unbearable over-the-top act as the antagonist Peter. Nawaz is so captivating that there's little Arora can do to spoil your experience. Freaky Ali is Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is Freaky Ali - no two ways about it. He's well-supported by Biswas, Basra, and other bit players like Nikitin Dheer and Paresh Ganatra. Jackie Shroff's cameo at the end is also well-timed and adds flavor to the climax.

Freaky Ali gives you your money's worth while also marking a welcome return of form to the Director's chair for Sohail Khan. It's unlike any underdog story you've seen before, and despite few lapses in the screenplay, Nawazuddin makes the entire experience pleasurable.

Baar Baar Dekho Decent At Select Multiplexes Freaky Ali Low
Friday 09 September 2016 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Baar Baar Dekho had a decent opening at some multiplexes of the big cities especially in the North at around 30-35% but other multiplexes were lower at around 20%. Overall the opening is fair and remains to be seen how the film goes over the rest of they day. Looking at the initial numbers its probably going to be a five city film as its best chances for numbers outside the big metros was some sort of start in the Agra and Indore's of the country on the popularity of its hit song Kala Chasma but that has not really happened. The film will be depending on the business in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Bangalore and Kolkata and these cities do best on Saturday so big growth in these places tomorrow will mean at least the film has appreciation in these places. The North India multiplexes of Delhi NCR and big cities of Punjab will lead on day one.

The other major release Freaky Ali has taken a 15% opening probably has one third of the screenings of Baar Baar Dekho. The film also managed to find its way to a single screen release but to no response as does not the face value or content for single screens. This film is totally dependent on word of mouth and if the reports of the film are decent then it could challenge Baar Baar Dekho over the weekend and weekdays at multiplexes outside the big metroes.

Ek Kahani Julie Ki is a non starter and with one show at limited multiplexes it hardly has a chance at the box office.

Movie Review: Freaky Ali

Director : Sohail Khan

Cast : Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Arbaaz Khan, Amy Jackson, Jas Arora, Seema Bisham, Nikitin Dheer, Asif Basra

Quick take : An underdog comedy that'll surely make you smile

Filmfare rating : 3/5

Remember American comedies like Tin Cup and Happy Gilmore which centered around golf? They all had dysfunctional, underdog heroes who come out of nowhere to win prestigious golf tournaments. Well, Freaky Ali is a happy amalgamation of all those films.

Ali (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is an orphan brought up by a Hindu woman (Seema Biswas). He's a deadbeat underwear salesman who plies his trade on the streets. He becomes friends with Maqsood (Arbaaz Khan), who takes him on as a partner in his extortion racket that he looks after for Danger Bhai (Nikitin Dheer). Both bumble through assignments and somehow escape the Bhai's wrath. In the middle of their misadventures, they discover that Ali is a natural at golf. He begins to play in the earnest and goes on to defeat the current champion (Jas Arora) and win the heart of his erstwhile manager...

Director Sohail Khan has got most things right. The lower middle class basti where Ali and Maqsood live feels like a real place and not some phony set. The golf greens and the golfing shots havea ring of authenticity as well. The atmosphere is kept light throughout. The villain isn't some dreaded mafia type but someone who is a butt of jokes among his men. The melodrama is balanced by some engaging acting by the ensemble cast. The gags are family friendly and the dialogue doesn't cross the lines of decency.

The film rests squarely on Nawazuddin's shoulders. His character is written with his strengths in mind and is full of in jokes as well " like he once says, garoor to hum pahad ka bhi tod dete hain " referring to his Dashrath Manjhi act. He's excellent as the cocky, steeetsmart guy who decimates the rich at their own game. His timing is excellent and his camaraderie with Arbaaz feels real. He really makes you root for his underdog character.

Considering that his brother has produced and directed Freaky Ali, Arbaaz could have monopolised the film. That he doesn't do so speaks for his maturity as an actor who cares more for the product than the mileage he gets from it. He shuttles between friendship and greed and you're glad he chooses friendship in the end. Seema Biswas, as Ali's foster mother makes for a good screen mom. Amy Jackson hasn't got much scope. She's pretty as hell for sure and acts as a motivator for Ali. Mention also should be made of Asif Basra, the benevolent caddy who teaches Ali the tricks of the trade.

Rounding off, Freaky Ali is a sweet little comedy that's sure to put a smile on your lips. Nawazuddin's performance alone is worth the price of the ticket.

I thought the trailer was interesting.

But having watched Raman Raghav recently, am in no mood to watch Nawaz anytime in the near future.
