Hey!

Inspired by the Housefull 3 thread.

What do you guys think of the blatant -isms that you see in Bollywood movies- colorism, racism, sexism etc?

This scene for example-

Do you feel it's all in jest and shouldn't be taken seriously or do you find it disturbing?

Some of these movies do not get into trouble in the first place for discrimination, especially in the case of racism and colorism.

Do you think the audience is to blame? Is it because of their 'mediocre' taste, as Anushka Sharma has said?

There are also scenes in Rajnikanth's Lingaa where an Indian man berates and beats his white British wife, as if in retaliation to what the villainous British collector has put them through. Classic combination of racism and sexism. Using women to get back at another group. It's considered honourable to conquer the British by conquering one of their own women.

Opinions?

What other examples can yo provide of such '-isms' in movies?

Oh yes. As if sleeping with someone black is a crime of sorts.

Why doesn't the Censor Board pull up directors for this sort of shit rather than what they usually do?

Erm I may be wrong but I don't think she breaks down because the guy was black! 😆 She took drugs, had sex with a random man, which she has no memory of because she was not in her senses! She didn't know what the hell she was doing to herself hence she broke down!

Gotta disagree here

Placing a black guy in that scene was anything but innocuous. It totally played on the racial prejudice that Indians have for black people. It was supposed to invoke disgust amongst the audiences. A hot white guy in that scene would not have invoked such a reaction, either from the character or the audience. It was shown as the lowest point she could reach and a black guy was used conveniently to draw that out.

Always praising the "goris" in songs. Bollywood lyricists have a special habit of showing the fair girls superior/more beautiful. That's a very sad fact!
P.s - i have found ladki beautiful the only song in which the guy gets attracted towards a "saawli" ladki

You know what it could be like that, your explanation does sound correct- filmmakers are totally capable of using that strategy. But I watched the scene again before commenting here, and Meghana look torn even before she looks who is beside her! She almost broke down, when she didn't know where she was, and her clothes lying everywhere with drugs lying here and there. Also taking in the fact, that at such places you do find a certain looking kind of people, not wanting to generalize but a hot looking, nicely dressed white man would look out of place. And that's wrong of filmmakers to generalize that way but they do use such tricks like all unkempt hobo looking people to show its that kind of place- there are foreigners lurking around, skimpily clad women, long haired guys. They also kept a white blond woman dancing with the black guy before that!

I don't know if I'm articulating this correctly! 😆
