India: point-wise summary

  • India’s rank: 125th in the Global Passport Index 2026.

  • India slipped by 1 place: from 124th in 2025 to 125th in 2026. Tiny fall, big newspaper headline, naturally.

  • India is still outside the top 100 passport rankings.

  • Total countries covered by the index: around 200 countries, according to Global Citizen Solutions’ 2026 index page. (Global Citizen Solutions)

  • Indian passport visa-free access: 26 destinations, as reported by Times of India and Economic Times. (The Times of India)

  • Overall score: India’s composite score is reported as 45.1.

Factors considered in India’s ranking

The Global Passport Index does not rank passports only by visa-free travel. It uses three main pillars: mobility, investment, and quality of life. (Global Citizen Solutions)

1. Enhanced Mobility, 50% weight

  • This is the most important factor.

  • It checks how freely Indian passport holders can travel.

  • It includes visa-free access, visa-on-arrival, ETA, eVisa and visa-required destinations.

  • India performs weakly here because Indians still need visas for many major destinations.

  • The article says Indians need visas for countries such as the US, UK, Germany, France, China and UAE. (The Times of India)

2. Investment Index, 25% weight

  • This checks how strong and attractive the country is economically.

  • It considers things like business environment, economic opportunity, innovation, income levels and taxation.

  • India does better here than in mobility because of its large economy and investment potential, but not enough to pull the overall passport rank into the top 100.

3. Quality of Life Index, 25% weight

  • This checks living conditions linked to citizenship.

  • It includes factors such as sustainable development, cost of living, happiness, personal freedoms, environmental performance and migrant acceptance. (Global Citizen Solutions)

  • India’s lower quality-of-life score compared with developed countries also affects the final rank.

India compared with nearby countries

  • China: ahead of India, reported around 104th.

Why India ranks low

  • Indian citizens still need visas for many developed and high-demand countries.

  • India has fewer strong visa-waiver agreements compared with top-ranked European countries.

  • Mobility has the highest weight, so weak travel access hurts India heavily.

  • India’s economic size helps, but GDP alone does not make a passport powerful. Annoying, but accurate.

  • Top-ranked passports combine visa-free access, strong economies, high quality of life and trusted diplomatic relations.
