In 90's era, when film-makers focused on international locations, mushy romance and mustard fields, Mani Ratnam had his own vision about love-stories and films he wanted to make. After Roja and Bombay, third from this 'parallel cinema' sort of film was Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and Preity Zinta starrer Dil Se. Even though Dil se was not a box-office block-buster, the film till today is considered as one of the finest pieces of Bollywood Cinema.

Santosh Sivan's screenplay, Gulzar's lyrics and Rahman's music makes it a movie worth calling a 'Bollywood classic'. Dil se definitely is Shahrukh Khan's one of thebest performances because as a love-lorn Amar, he convinces you to empathize and pray for a happy ending to his love story. Today Dil Se completes 18 years and here are the reasons why Dil Se will always be one memorable film for every cinema-lover:

Dil Se portrays 7 shades of love that are defined in ancient Arabic literature. The stages being attraction, infatuation, love, reverence, worship, obsession, and death. Amarkant Desai (Shahrukh Khan)'s character goes through all these stages so beautifully that the film becomes a poetic and visual delight for the audience. Even the opening scene of the film and how Ratnam chose his way to introduce Meghna/Moina in the film was beautiful. Remember 'Amar's choti si prem kahaani?'

Meghna-Aakhir tum kya jaante ho mere baare mein?
Amar- Kuch nahin. Sirf yeh ki main tumhe chahta hoon..dil se..
The conversations that Meghna and Amar have in the film are so poetic and well shot that every frame looks perfect. Without saying much, they exchange glances and everything is said.

Amar and Meghna's love-Amar reveals his love for Meghna's eyes -- because he can't see the world hidden behind them, and his hate for the same, stunning eyes -- because he can't see the world hidden behind them. The dialogue, "Mujhe sabse zyaada pasand hai tumhaari yeh aankhen. Kyunki main jitna bhi inmen dekhna chaahuun... mujhe kuch dekhta hi nahin. Tumhaari andar itna kuch chupaa huaa hai. Mujhe woh bahut pasand hai..", each and conversation between Amar and Meghna is pure and enticing.

Movie was shot in various parts of Himachal, Leh, Assam, New Delhi, Kerala, and Bhutan. Dil Se's biggest hit was Chaiyya Chaiyya which was shot between Malaika Arora and Shah Rukh Khan on top of the Nilgiri Express, en route Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri. Satrangi Re was shot near Thikse Monastery, the mystical Basgo Monastery ruins, and Pangong lake near Pangong Tso in Ladakh.

Jiya Jale was shot near Athirappilly Falls, Alappuzha backwaters, Periyar National Park, and Periyar Lake in Kerala. However as the film reaches its climax, the action sequences in the film choreographed by Allan Amin were shot near Connaught Place, New Delhi, Rajpath and Old Delhi. Visually the film was a beautifully shot visual poem where you definitely get enchanted and mesmerized.

Amar's love confession for Meghna had one of the most soul-stirring dialogues- Pehle main yeh bataaunga ki mujhse sabse zyaada naa pasand kya hai. Hum dono ke beech mein yeh doorie hai. Yeh mujhe bahut naa pasand hai. Tumhaari andar jo yeh bahut kuch chupa hota hai. Aur sabse buurii lagti hai mujhe tumhari aankhein. Kitna bhi main inmen dekhna chaahoon... mujhe kuch dekhta hi nahin..."

Amar tells why he adores the distance between him and Meghna even more with the dialogue, "Sabse zyada pasand mujhe yeh doori hai..kyun ki agar ye doori na ho, toh tumhare kareeb aane ka bahana na mile..", each and every dialogue builds the depth of the character in the film.

Each and every song from Dil se is a gem. From the 'Train classic' Chaiyya Chaiyya to the heart-wrenching 'Satrangi Re', Dil Se definitely is one of the best works of Rahman! How can you forget 'Ae Ajnabi'? Even the background score of the film will keep you hooked to the story-line of the film. Even the title track of the film 'Dil Se' has beautiful lines like- "Dil hai toh phir dard hoga, dard hai toh dil bhi hoga.." left a haunting impact in the minds of people.

How beautiful is the scene from Dil Se where Amar confesses his love for Meghna? Isn't it the heart-warming proposal ever? "Mujhe kuch nahi pata, bas yeh pata hai ki main tumhe chaahta hoon, dil se..". It gave a lesson loud and clear, confess your feelings before its too late. One must not 'wait' for the 'right' moment when it comes to matters of the heart. It also taught us that if you know that you've found your love, never let that person go. No matter what the situations are, you should not 'let go' people you really want in your life.
If you still haven't watched Dil Se, its high time you do and for people who love Dil Se, here's a treat! Watch Dil se and it'll take you back to 1990's-
What a classic! Saw this with my mom!
The scene with SRK's monologue with ai ajnabi playing in the background is masterful...I saw the other day peeps arguing that SRK's win for KKHH was undeserved... Damn straight undeserved... He should have won everything for this & Manisha would go down in history as the most underrated actress ever... How superior was she to all the current wannabe actress.. Much more talented and even more beautiful!
