And welcome all to the latest round of "Mina tries to outrun the CVs"! 😆 Thank you to everyone who has stuck with this story and anyone who is just tuning in. Now that the show may be starting on its own version of Abhi's memory loss, I want to try to get my version done first. We'll see who wins...and thanks for joining me on the journey 😳

AT THE END OF THE LAST CHAPTER

Aab, aage...😃

CHAPTER SIX

Abhi spent the first day after his surgery drifting in and out of sleep, but every time he woke up, he found his wife beside him. Even when he just opened his eyes for just a minute between dreams, she was seated next to his bed, keeping watch over him.

He knew Daadi would have done the same if she were around, and it felt good to know that even without Daadi around, he had someone who cared enough to stay with him. He might not know this wife of his properly yet, but her constant presence gave him an undefinable sense of security. It made it easy for him to surrender to the healing tides of sleep. He still didn't understand everything that had happened to him, but knowing that he wasn't going through it alone was enough to keep him from worrying much at the moment.

So the next morning, it was a rude surprise to find himself alone when he woke up.

The companion's chair in his line of sight was vacant. Pragya had been practically glued to it yesterday. He frowned wondering where she had gone.

He slowly sat up, holding on to the rails of his bed to support himself. For a moment he felt disgustingly weak, unimpressed with his own shakiness. However, he was relieved to find that overall, he wasn't in much pain. Whatever accident he had survived, it hadn't left him with any noticeable bodily injury.

It had just stolen a piece of his mind.

As he looked around the room, he found that he really was completely alone. But before that realization could turn into a worry, he saw that Pragya had not gone so far after all.

She was standing just outside the room, talking heatedly to a group of people. He could see her through the windowed wall, and it looked like she was blocking the door to keep out the crowd.

He didn't recognize any of the people she was talking to, which made him wonder if maybe they were fans wanting to visit him. There were two older women and two girls around Aaliya's age, one of whom was visibly pregnant. There was also a tall, stern looking man wearing thick-framed glasses. Once glance at him was enough to tell Abhi that the man at least wasn't likely to be a fan of his.

Then one of the young women - the stunningly beautiful one who wasn't pregnant - set her hand on Pragya's shoulder. It was a soothing gesture, clearly meant to calm Pragya down. Abhi could guess that only someone close to Pragya would be allowed to touch her like that. After that it didn't take long to figure out that the group of people must be her family.

He looked over each person in the group and tried to determine the relationships. It was easy to place her mother and grandmother, as the older ladies looked about the right age for the roles. For the rest, he thought they must be Pragya's siblings. Perhaps the pregnant one was a sister-in-law? It seemed that she came from a big family, though no one that might be her father was in sight.

Before Abhi could wonder further about that, he saw Pragya holding her hand up to end the conversation. She said something more and firmly shook her head.

Her mother's mouth pursed into a tight frown. A long moment stretched as mother and daughter stared each other down, and Abhi found himself wishing he could see how Pragya looked just then. If she was as fierce as her mother...why? On his behalf? The thought was unsettling, but he reminded himself that he had no idea what was going on so it was no use getting emotional about it.

The moment passed, and Pragya's mother seemed to soften. She raised her hand to Pragya's cheek and said a few words in a more gentle manner. Pragya squeezed her mother's hand and the two women shared a hug.

One by one, Pragya hugged everyone else in the group, except for the man with glasses. The man clasped her shoulder briefly, and whatever he said made Pragya nod in agreement. Finally, she stepped away from them all and gave a last smile. She turned her back to them and came into his room.

Her eyes widened when she saw that he was sitting up. "I'm so sorry!" she said, rushing to his bedside. "I thought it'd only be a minute, I didn't think you'd wake up. Do you need anything? The nurses will bring your breakfast, but they'll probably have to do some checks first. Maybe -"

Abhi held up his hand to stop her hectic speech. He thought over what she had said, processing all of it slowly. Then he couldn't help but laugh.

That much concern should have felt smothering, but instead, somehow it was...cute.

He smiled and met her eyes. "I can wait for the nurses and breakfast. Do I have visitors now?" He tipped his head in the direction of the window.

Her mouth dropped open in surprise, and for a moment he was distracted at the sight. She still wasn't wearing makeup, but could her lips possibly be that full and pink without the help of gloss? She cleared her throat, and his gaze snapped back to her eyes.

He was pretty sure he wasn't doing anything as schoolboy-ish as blushing in embarrassment. The tingling in his cheeks must be some sudden nerve spasm due to his brain surgery.

"Yes, actually," Pragya said slowly. "My family came, unexpectedly. You don't have to meet them, since you're just waking up -"

"Of course I'll meet them," Abhi insisted. "They've come, and I'm awake, so why not?"

"Just...since you don't remember them, and they'd be strangers to you -"

"But they're not really strangers, right? They're family, and I have to meet them at some point. Just bring them in."

She hesitated for a moment longer, doubt clouding her eyes. But then she gave him a nod and headed to the hallway to bring back her family.

Abhi watched her every step, his mind now fully awake. He understood her sense of caution, and appreciated that she didn't want to impose on him. She was right that they were strangers to him. He had no reason to want to see them.

And yet, he very much did want to meet these people. He was curious about the family he'd married into, and what better way to start learning about them than to meet them now?

As Pragya gestured to let everyone in, Abhi met his mother-in-law's gaze for the first time. The seriousness in her eyes was softened by a look of unmistakably maternal concern as she took in the sight of his bandaged head and still-healing stitches.

An odd warmth rose in his chest, and he sat up straighter as she approached his bed. Two others followed politely behind her, but Abhi couldn't look away from the woman whose name he didn't even know yet.

Somehow, just like her daughter's, her mere presence was reassuring. She tentatively held out her hand to him, and he easily took it, briefly squeezing her fingers.

And without his having to think about it, his brain supplied the only natural way to greet her. The syllables slid smoothly off his tongue as he smiled at her and said, "Good morning, Mummyji."

***

To her credit, Maa took Abhi's startling greeting completely in stride. "Good morning, betaji," she replied warmly, and the conversation flowed smoothly from there.

Pragya was impressed at Maa's ability to act so calm when she was still angry with Abhi for everything that had happened before the accident. In the argument they had had in the hall before Abhi woke up, Maa had made it clear that she didn't approve of Pragya's decision to stay on as Abhi's nurse when they were supposed to be getting divorced. However, seeing Abhi's awful state with her own eyes clearly had a softening effect on Maa. She spoke to him gently and reassuringly, and any stranger observing the interaction would have thought she and Abhi shared a perfect saasuma-damaad dynamic.

Although the visit only lasted five minutes, for Pragya it felt like an hour. Her blood thrummed with tension through every second as she worried that her family would overwhelm or confuse Abhi, or that he would unintentionally upset them. Luckily, the visit passed without anything disastrous happening, and it came to a natural end when a nurse arrived for Abhi's pre-breakfast checkup.

Pragya had intended to stay for the checkup, but Abhi insisted that she should walk her family out to the parking lot. She could see that he would get agitated if she refused, so she reluctantly did as he asked. As she watched her family leave in an auto, she felt a small ripple of guilty relief. At least now she could focus on Abhi without worrying about her family's disapproval.

Bulbul had brought Pragya a bag with a change of clothes and some toiletries. Though she didn't want to spend any more time than necessary away from Abhi, she convinced herself that taking a few minutes to freshen up couldn't hurt. She ducked into a bathroom to change her anarkali and wash her face, which had the beneficial effect of making her feel less like a robot and more like a human as she walked back to Abhi's room.

It turned out to be perfect timing, as an orderly was delivering Abhi's breakfast just as she arrived. She took the tray of food and settled into the companion's chair, ready to resume her role of nursemaid. As she raised the first spoonful of porridge to Abhi's mouth, she was surprised to find that he was...staring at her chest?

Flushing with embarrassment, Pragya wished her hands were free to rearrange her dupatta, which she had thoughtlessly left hanging over one shoulder instead of spreading it across herself as she usually did. She cleared her throat to get Abhi's attention.

"Suniye? You have to eat, here is -"

Abhi's gaze lifted, slowly surveying her from the neck up. He seemed fixated on her forehead for some reason, which again made Pragya wish her hands were free so that she could twitch her glasses into place or smooth back her hair or take care of whatever little detail was nagging him -

"Sindoor," he said suddenly. "And mangal sutra. You weren't wearing those before."

Pragya's eyes snapped to his in surprise. "I - I wear them everyday," she stuttered, confused that he would comment on this of all things. Then she realized that she hadn't been wearing them since she walked out of his house, and that this actually was the first time since his attack that he was seeing her with the traditional adornments. "I mean, that is to say -"

"Every day?" Abhi repeated. "Well, Daadi must love that," he said in an undertone, sounding more bemused than appreciative. Then he looked down at the tray of food and abruptly started to scowl. "I hate porridge."

Pragya put the spoon back in the bowl and bit back a laugh. She really shouldn't be finding him adorable when he was being immature but...the scowl was cute. "I forgot, I have something to make it better," she said soothingly. She found her purse and took out the small container she had asked Akaash to get from Robin the previous day.

Abhi watched with silent curiosity as she unscrewed the cap from the container and shook some of its contents onto his porridge. He studied the brown flecks that swirled into the oats as she stirred the bowl to evenly distribute the addition.

"Brown sugar?" he guessed, his brow wrinkling as she raised the spoon to his lips again.

"Mm, no," she said, shaking her head with a small smile.

Abhi grudgingly let her slide the spoon into his mouth. His expression changed as the flavour burst onto his tongue. He swallowed quickly, and the tip of his tongue darted out to catch the last lick on his lips. "Cinnamon!" he said with a grin.

His genuine delight was as adorable as his previous exaggerated dismay. Under normal circumstances, Pragya would have scolded herself for reacting to him like this. But as things were, she was just relieved that he was showing signs of being his usual carefree self.

"Cinnamon," she confirmed, returning his grin. "Toh ab aap acche baache ke tarhan sab khayeinge, hai na?" (So now you will eat it all like a good boy, right?)

He scowled dramatically again, but let her keep feeding him spoonfuls of porridge. Between bites he asked, "How did you know that I love cinnamon?"

"It's my job to know," Pragya replied with a laugh. "I'm your wife."

She said it without thinking, and only realized after the words were out that it was the wrong thing to say. His smile faded into a conflicted look, and his gaze flickered over her kumkum and mangal sutra again.

"Right," he said in the same strained undertone as before.

An awkward silence settled over them as she fed him the rest of the porridge. When the bowl was finished, she helped him sip from a cup of water. After finishing a bit more than half of the water, Abhi raised his hand to signal that he didn't want anymore.

He swallowed his last mouthful of water and gave a rueful frown. "I don't see any coffee on that tray."

Pragya set down the cup of water. "No, sorry," she said softly. "They said you can't have stimulants yet, because of the brain surgery."

Abhi merely grunted at this, apparently not finding sufficient words to express his feelings. He shifted on the bed, trying to lean back against the pillows.

Pragya realized he was trying to lie down again and quickly helped him ease onto his back. "Sambhal ke!" (Careful!) she said in distraction, focusing on adjusting the pillows under his head so they wouldn't interfere with his bandages. "Aap bhi na." (You're impossible)

His fingers closed around her wrist as she straightened. "Do you scold me like this every day, too?" he asked in a low tone.

She met his gaze and realized that he was just teasing. Still, her cheeks felt hot, and her voice was not quite steady as she protested, "N-no, of course not, I was only -"

Abhi laughed and let go of her wrist. His fingertips brushed briefly against the back of her hand, sending a spark under her skin. She settled back into her chair and tried to regain her composure.

Abhi tilted his head to face her. "It's probably a good thing," he said. "Daadi does the same, for my own good. Since she chose you, you must be like her."

"Umm," Pragya hesitated, looking back at him with wide eyes. "Yes..." she nodded, though she wasn't sure how much she agreed. That was probably supposed to be a compliment, but she found that having him compare her to Daadi didn't sound quite right.

"By the way, I was glad to meet your family," Abhi continued. "They seem very nice."

"Mmhmm," Pragya nodded again. She was glad to know the encounter hadn't stressed him after all.

"But your bhaiyya and bhabhi didn't come in."

"My - who?" Pragya asked in bewilderment.

"I saw them in the hall, with the rest of your family," Abhi explained. "But they didn't come in when your mom did."

Pragya realized who he meant, and she shook her head to clear his misunderstanding. "No, no. That was Suresh and Rachna. They are our neighbours, and friends. We're not related."

"Oh," Abhi said, and for some reason he was frowning slightly. "Close friends? They must be, to come to the hospital with your mom."

Pragya shook her head again. "No, they came separately. Suresh was bringing Rachna for a check up."

"Oh. Is it their first baby? He seems like the nervous type. Those thick glasses of his..."

For a moment, Pragya wondered if he was about to call Suresh "Double Battery" as had become his habit. But Abhi was just looking at her in expectant silence. She realized that he was still misunderstanding the situation and explained, "Rachna is his sister. He's not a nervous type, but he's a very responsible brother."

Abhi's frown deepened, and his eyebrows rose, crinkling his brow. "Doesn't she have a husband?"

Once again, Pragya found herself at a loss for words. Would explaining that his own cousin was responsible for Rachna's situation count as a negative shock? But why did he care about this detail anyway? He had barely known Rachna even before the accident, and now that he didn't remember anything about her, she would count as a stranger to him.

Deciding that the tangled situation between Rachna and Akaash could be saved for another day, Pragya answered vaguely, "The baby's father isn't in the picture."

"Oh. Too bad."

He had evidently lost interest, as his eyes were fluttering closed.

Pragya watched as Abhi's body relaxed, his breathing evening out as he settled in for another nap. She closed her hand lightly over top of his. "Hanh, aap sou jaye," (Yes, go to sleep) she whispered, though he was past needing her instruction.

As Abhi slept, Pragya sent a silent prayer of gratitude for his health. Yes, he had lost three months' worth of memories, but it could have been so much worse. She was beyond glad that he was alright in every other way.

Thinking over their interactions that morning, she wasn't sure what to make of an Abhi who was so calm and polite. An Abhi who called her mother "Mummyji" and said he was glad she scolded him like his Daadi. Had his injury changed his personality?

Or had this sweet, easygoing man been hiding within her temperamental husband all this time?

Dear Mina,
I started reading this fic few months ago when I joined IF but I stopped with chapter 1 after reading the note about Rabul above chapter 2 🥺. I never visited this again though I wanted to read the Abhigya part of the story. As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I rubbed my eyes whether I am really seeing Aug 1 as the date.

Outrun the CVs - I am loving this 😆
Regarding this update - My reaction is exactly like Pragya's... the last two line. It was a sweet chapter. Happy that you made him know that she was his wife. I loved the porridge scene.

Thanks for the chapter 😊 Hoping you would continue this soon

Aww Nivu, thank you for the letter! 🤗

And thank you for giving the story another chance. Did you end up reading all the chapters or just jumped to this one? Originally I wanted the story to be an alternate history of KKB, with storylines for all the characters. Now I am more motivated to just finish the story in a good way, so it will focus on AbhiGya and there won't be much more if anything on the RaBul angle.

I'm glad you liked the porridge scene! I think it's going to be a sweeter type of story over all. I hope to continue soon too. Thanks for reading and thanks for commenting!! ❤️

Why thank you HB! Since I posted the memory loss part in November, I'm not sure I can take credit for CVs choosing to use it now. They probably chose it for some other crazy reason known only to them! 😆 Thank you for reading, I'm glad you like it and ❤️ right back! 🤗

Thank you! I hope to present a lighter version of the memory loss possibilities, expecting some heavy drama on the show. Thanks for taking the time to comment 😊
