Embracing the Rain
Part-1
It was not any ordinary day. It was the day when she first met him 4 years back, June 29 was the date. She still remembers the date. She was 19, a college fresher. The next day was one of her semester finals. She and her bestie Chinky were busy in the college library preparing the notes. They didn't realize when it started to pour. When they noticed it was already evening. Chinky bided adios to her as she had a hurry to reach home. She wasn't finished with the notes yet. She took an extra hour to compile her notes.
Her cell phone was in silent mode and she just checked that almost 25 calls from Maa were unnoticed by her. She murmured Maa is going to kill me. It's raining so heavily and she must be worried. That's why she called me several times.'
She just grabbed her bag and put the notes inside it and left the library room in a hurry. She took the cell phone in her hand to call Maa but her eyes got teary after noticing that it was out of charge. What the hell is this? What would I do now? Maa might be going crazy by now. Moreover, Raghu Kaka, their driver took a leave that day. Maa dropped her college and instructed her to call an hour before leaving so that she would come and pick her. How stupid is she? She messed up everything. Even Chinky was not there to help her. She needed to reach home as early as possible. She started to climb the staircases in a hurry that she was about to slip when two strong arms grabbed her hands. She looked up straight into his eyes.
What do you think you were up to? You would have slipped if I hadn't hold your hands timely'- he uttered in a worried voice pulling her closer to him.
Will you please leave my hands? It's paining' -she uttered.
Oh I am sorry.' He immediately left her hands. I just got worried as I saw you were about to slip.'
But you hold me right?'-she uttered in a sweet voice.
He chuckled-Yeah I did. Btw this is Kunj Sarna. 3rd year, Department of Electrical Engineering.'
And you are? Oh Myself Twinkle Taneja. 1st year, Department of English.'
Don't tell me people have to study English. I mean who doesn't know yaar?'- he said in a sarcastic way.
She was feeling offended now. Excuse me Mr. Sarna or whatever your name is? Do you think we learn basic grammars? There are other important parts in a language which big headed people like you will never understand.' She showed full anger on her face while saying so. She thanked herself for not saying thank you to this person who is rude and arrogant and who just saved her from slipping.
She ignored him and was about to leave when he giggled and uttered Please be careful. Otherwise I have to come along to save you from slipping.' She gave him a tough look and left.
What does he think of himself? He is just a stranger and he said it's very easy to study English. Does he know how hard she has to study and give efforts to prepare notes on Shakespeare's Dramas? Does he know how hard the course History of English Language is? Does he know they don't have any fixed syllabus as literature itself is as vast as an ocean? May be he is studying in Engineering Department but he has no authority to defame others. Such a cheap act of him' thinking so she came out of the building. It was still pouring heavily and she couldn't see a taxi nearby. She waited in the nearby shed for 10 minutes and decided to go in the rain to find a taxi. She just gave her first step and someone again grabbed her left hand and brought her under the umbrella.
Much to her surprise she saw that it was the same person who just saved her from slipping. Kunj Sarna. She fumed in anger and said How dare you? She was about to leave when he held her hand once again. I am sorry Twinkle if I had hurt you.' I was just joking. I noticed you were looking for taxis but trust me you won't find one nearby. Let's walk and I will help you to find one.'
Thank you for realizing your mistake. I don't think I need to seek help from strangers. I can find one by myself. She freed her hand and turned back when she heard one melodious voice rhyming:
There's a patch of old snow in a corner
That I should have guessed
Was a blow-away paper the rain
Had brought to rest.
It is speckled with grime as if
Small print overspread it,
The news of a day I've forgotten --
If I ever read it.
She gazed back and saw his glittering face. He gave her a heartfelt smile and said A Patch of Old Snow by Robert Frost' -one of my favorite poems. I think by now you know that I love poetry and I was just joking. The roads are not safer this time. I think you know what I mean. I will help you to find a taxi. Hopefully we are not strangers anymore. I love poems and so do you I guess. We have something common between us.'
For the first time she looked at him with moist eyes. He was almost 21 and wearing black tee and faded jeans. He was looking like a Greek God and she saw integrity in his eyes. She nodded her head in yes and stood close to him. He upheld the umbrella covering their heads.
He looked at the pretty girl who was standing beside him wearing a white and blue long floral dress. She had straight silky hair which was untied and small droplets of rain water were falling down from her face.
'So Ms. Twinkle let's take a stroll through the wet streets. I am sure you won't regret the walk as soon as you find the taxi.'
She smiled and said 'let's walk...'
