Previous Part - CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 3

"Aaahhh!!!!!!"

Maan couldn't help but place his palms on his ears to *save* himself from the shrilling and piercing voice of Geet while he closed his eyes when he felt Geet clutching his shirt tightly and almost glueing herself to his body. It was then that he realised what actually triggered this *reaction* from her.

There was a power cut. And, well, like all those typical, cliche, filmy girls, even Geet was no exception. She was equally frightened by darkness.

As a child, Geet suffered from nyctophobia, being afraid of darkness whereby she would start having rapid breaths if she would stay in darkness. As she grew up, the fear subsidised a bit in the sense that she could stay in the dark only with someone with her. Nonetheless, she preferred staying away from total darkness all the while to be on the safe side.

Clearly aware of her phobia, Maan cuddled her in his arms to sooth her for a while. Inwardly, he said his little prayer to God for making him being there at that time, since as much as he was genuinely caring for Geet, he couldn't help but admit that he was in pure bliss to be having her so close to him at that time.

After a while, when Maan could feel that her hold on his shirt released a little bit, he asked her to leave him so that he could light few candles. But Geet being Geet, kept following him all the while, since she preferred being with him rather than being alone in the dark. And she said she didn't trust me few minutes earlier, Maan thought as he shook his head lightly.

After having lit few candles and a fire in the living room, Maan took Geet with him and made her sit beside the roaring fire while he adjusted himself opposite to her. He knew, she would never go to sleep in such a situation, that is why, without her voicing it out, he did this.

"Thanks Maan and I'm sorry. Mujhe tumhe woh sab, aise, nahi kehna chahie tha," Geet softly said after a while.

Giving her a quizzed look, he said :

"Matlab???"

Duffer kahin ka. Sab pata hain isse, phir bhi attitude dekho!!!! Oh God, why me only???? Geet told herself while she shot a glance upwards.

Maan, who, perfectly, knew what was she talking about, giggled inwardly, amused by her antics. She had the serious habit of talking to her God for every little thing which was something Maan really liked about her.

"Matlab ke, I mean, woh, errr, I-I shouldn't have told you those things. Dekho na, ab tum mera *khayal* rakhte ho, mujhe har waqt bachate rehte ho, nahin, I mean kabhi kabhi, and still, I behave like this with you all the time. Waise bhi, it's your personal life. I mean, tum kitne ladkiyon ke saath, you know what I'm saying, na?" Geet replied audible enough for only him to hear her.

"Acha woh, yea, you're right, it shouldn't matter to you at alll, what I do, ya phir kiss ke saath hoon, wagera wagera. Tumhe waise bhi koyi farq nahi padta na," Maan said and then moving a bit towards her, he softly added, "yea phir padta hain?"

Shifting her gaze towards him to match his, Geet looked upwards not knowing what to reply.

"Bolo na, Geet, chup kyun ho?"

Oh God!!! Aaap ko mazza aata hain kya making me stuck in situations like this. What do I say now? Farq toh padta hain, but woh, he, he, he doesn't deserve it.

"Woh Maan, ermm, I..."

"Theek hain Geet, nahin bataana hain toh mat bataao, but at least mujhse our especially khood se jhoot toh mat bolo," Maan interrupted her without breaking the eye contact.

"Khood se jhoot!!! Wh-what do do you mean, huh?" Geet asked him fearing whether he knows everything."

"C'mon Geet, you and I both know what you really feel for me. So, please stop pretending at least now. I cannot take it anymore," Maan nearly roared as he got up on his feet and looked the other way, indicating that he was actually hurt.

Standing up, Geet tried to say something but nothing except a murmur came out as she tried to reach out for him.

Sensing her presence behind him, Maan immediately turned around to grab her harshly by her arms only to hear a painful moan coming from her.

"Maan, chodo, what are you doing? You're hurting me. Mujhe dard horaha hain. Leave me."

Maan hissed in anger as he continued.

"Dard!!!! Dard ki baat kar rahi ho tum. Toh phir, what will you call what I undergo each time you deny me and my feelings like this. Joh yahaan," he said as he pointed towards his heart before continuing " yahaan feel karta hoon, what will you call that, huh???? Bolo, answer me now."

Taken aback by his sudden outburst, Geet was left in a panic-stricken state. She never realised how serious Maan might be about her.

"Maan, I,..." she tried to bring herself to say something only to be cut off by Maan once again.

"Kya galti hain meri, huh??? Just because I spent my whole college life with a *bad* image, does this mean I can never love someone truly, nor am I rightful for someone's love. Can my feelings and love never be reciprocated just because of that phase in my life," Maan said in a visibly hurt voice and tone.

When he realised that he still had his strong hold on her shoulders on hearing her hissing in pain, Maan immediately left her, cursing himself for his outburst and for acting like a psycho with her.

He immediately seated her on the couch and knelt in front of her, taking her face in his palms. Seeing her shocked expressions, he knew that she was taken aback by his unexpected behaviour and all that took place between them few seconds earlier and for that he was feeling extremely bad.

"I'm really sorry. Mujhe iss tarah se tumpar chillana nahi chahie tha. I had promised myself that I will give you all the time you will need to respond to my feelings but pata nahi whenever I see you, what happens to me. I cannot control my feelings and emotions around you Geet, I really cannot."

Even in the dark with only dim lights around, Geet could see his eyes welling up while she herself was silently crying.

"It's o.."

"Nahin Geet, let me finish my talk. I really want to end this matter today, once and for all. Mujhes aur bardasht nahi hota Geet. Ek chance toh banta hain na, please, don't stop me today," Maan nearly pleaded.

Seeing her silent nod, Maan, took her hands in his, which she knowingly gave, without reluctance, as he continued kneeling in front of her.

"I know Geet, I have been a flirt, Casanova, player, everything bad you might wish to call me, but trust me Geet, what I feel for you is totally different," he said as he looked up at her, knowing very well that she had her gaze on him.

"I won't refute that there has been many girls in my life, but Geet, you are not like them and neither have I considered or thought of you in that way. I really love you Geet. I know you have not been my first but I do want you to be my last Geet."

Geet felt something inside her the moment he said that. After all, don't they always that it's easy to be someone's first being someone's last is what is the difficult task.

Pausing for a while, to see if there was any reaction coming from her, Maan finally said softly, looking deeply into her eyes while the candles flickered and the fire beside them roared, uncertain and afraid of her answer:

"I love you Geet. Will you ever be able love me back?"

With this, Geet stiffened, not because of what he had asked her but due to the sincerity and honesty with which the question was asked, fearing a negative answer.

Maan was a player in college days but now at present he has changed and maybe its time that Geet gives him a chance that he deserves as he says he loves her and she'll be his last
