#41: Damn Auto-correct
Technology was man's gift to mankind and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Unless you want to get smacked in the head, because this blessed technology you speak of was the only way that she could maintain contact with her husband, Kunj who had travelled halfway around the globe for business!
Talk, text, face-time all miraculous down on the cellular through the wonders of technology.
Somedays it was them talking hours on end. They chatted about their day, how work went and ultimately as the minutes ticked into hours, they talked about how much they loved each other and ultimately the conversation ceased to make sense by the 2nd hour as they started the topic on the ethical conduct of warfare.
They would have talked for a third hour but time-zones were being a pain and her eyes were involuntarily slipping close. Also Kunj was nearing Lunch time and his grumbling stomach was a thorough reminder of the fact.
Then on days when their professional lives got too consuming, a simple Good morning. How are you doing?' text would have to suffice. The smiley face in response was the source of all mirth they experienced that day. And god forbid, if they received a frowny face! Twinkle would have a bad day, Kunj would have a bad day and anyone directly involved with them would thus have a bad day.
Night time was face-time time, where Twinkle would give Kunj a virtual kiss. And since her night was his day, he actually started his day with her kiss. And then Kunj would face time her during his night and Twinkle's day was made!
The past two days were the text only kind of day. Kunj was wrapping up his business and it made sense that he hardly had any time to speak. Plus, Twinkle could be seeing him in three days' time so he didn't mind.
Twinkle was currently setting up their bedroom. Putting on clean sheets, arranging the picture frames and the general dusting off furniture that one must do on a weekly basis. Her phone decides to ping right at that moment.
Text from Kunj' The notification read. She swiped her thumb across the screen to unlock the device and then swiped down to read the message.
Kunj: Guess What?
She types in a reply.
Twinkle: What?
Kunj: I am coming home tonight!! :)
Twinkle: Really?! Tum Mazak toh nahi kar rahe ho na?
He was supposed to come back tomorrow! And here he is, texting that he is coming TODAY! This better not be a joke, she thinks.
Kunj: Nahi Baba, promise. I wrapped up all the presentations early!
Twinkle: YES! My hubby-bubby is coming home tonight! Wait my night or your night?
Kunj: Yours :)
Twinkle: :D
Her happiness at that moment knew no bounds, her heart was singing in joy and she is pretty sure her cheeks were going to go numb from smiling that wide.
Kunj: Toh, aaj raat ka plan kya hai, Mrs. Sarna? ;)
Twinkle lets out a laugh at this. She was going to throw herself a party before he comes. She is going to skip the gym and just cuddle with a movie and some snacks waiting for him to come home. Pringles chips sounded so good! Oh and DDLJ! So it was decided she was going to watch DDLJ and stuff herself with Pringles.
Twinkle: I am getting pregnant tonight!
She didn't bother to read her message as she usually does, she was too happy for that. Instead, she looked at his picture by the bedside and smiled at him.
Her phone pinged again.
Kunj: Umm, shouldn't we talk about this first?
The airport that Kunj was currently at was well air conditioned and ventilated and yet, he could feel the sweat forming in the pits of his arms. Twinkle, that lady is going to be the death of him. Wasn't she the one who told him that she wanted to wait about another year before starting the family? And now in sudden burst of happiness she had decided she wanted to get knocked up?
Twinkle: What's to discuss? I am just getting pregnant...
On the other side of the planet, Twinkle was wondering as to why Kunj wanted to discuss about her buying Pringles. She got them all the time, what was different this time?
Kunj: I don't think it's the right time.
Because he yet hasn't saved as much as we would have liked before starting a family. Plus, no that it is mentioned he doesn't think he is ready for it. He strongly believes they should wait another year.
Twinkle: Kunj! I am getting pregnant tonight whether you like it or not!
That was as far as the conversation got before he let her know that he was about to board his flight.
To say that it was a restless flight for Kunj would be an understatement. He knew Twinkle was stubborn and convincing her to wait would be the task of the century. He just hopes she understands. He starts preparing a speech in his mind, things and the sequence of things he would say to persuade her in his favor.
But what if she just went complete Cave-woman on him. "Kunj beta teri izzat toh loot gayi aaj." He thinks to himself
The flight lands and with step that he takes, he feels the sense of impending doom increase.
The Sarna Mansion was empty as he had expected. Twinkle had informed him about the family leaving to attend a wedding in Jalandhar. Ab kaun bachayega tujhe..'
He enters the house with small steps, trying to buy as much time away from his wife as possible. Funny isn't it? Just a day ago he couldn't wait to be back in Amritsar and in the arms of his wife but now, he wants to run fast and run far.
"Twi-Twinkle?" he calls out to her.
"Bedroom mein!" she yells back.
Oh lord! She called him directly into the bedroom. He was so going to get it tonight.
He walks in the bedroom in two minutes. Any other day and he would have been there in seconds. He finds her sitting on their couch, completely covered in blankets. He really doesn't want to know what's underneath the blanket though.
"Kunj, guess what is underneath this blanket?" she asked excitedly.
He makes a dash towards the bathroom "Twinkle mujhe nahi jaan na."
"Par Kunj you will love it. Dekho toh sahi!" she screams behind him. But it was too late and the door was slammed on her face.
Isse kya hua?' she wonders.
Kunj emerges from the bathroom 15 minutes later. The tension in his shoulders were obvious. Kunj wiped the sweat off of his forehead.
"Twinkle, mujhe tujhse kuch baat karni hai." He gestures her to sit on the bed and takes his place next to her.
"Haan, kaho."
"Dekh, I know tu iss cheez ko leke bahut excited hai, par I don't think I am ready for this."
"Par Kunj humne yeh pehle bhi toh kiya hai na, phir?"
"Haan par tab baat different thi, tujhe abhi kuch aur chahiye na?" he asks, hesitant to meet her gaze.
"Toh tumhe pringles nahi chahiye. Dekho aisa hai toh, maine lays bhi laya hai"
"Pringles? Lays? Main teri pregnant hone ke baare main baat kar raha hoon."
She gets up abruptly now, shocked "KYA?!"
"Kya Kya? Tune hi toh kaha tha ki tujhe pregnant hona hai!"
"Kunj yeh tum kya keh rahe ho? Maine kab aisa kaha?"
He takes out his phone from his pocket and shows her all those messages. "Dekh, nahi kaha tha hya?"
Her eyes pop out, and she opens and closes her mouth a couple of times completely shocked.
"Maine Pringles likha tha! PRINGLES CHIPS!"
"Ab phir mat Twinkle." He tells her because he thinks that now she will deny wanting a baby just because he wasn't ready for ir.
"Nahi, sach mein. Yeh dekho!" she says and drops the blanket to the ground. There in her hands are several packs of Pringles potato chips in an array of flavors.
"Damn Auto-correct" they curse and blush deep red at the same time.
