Balance: What it All Comes Down To

I think the main roadblock that Dev and Neha are facing with this whole class conversation is that they have seen dire poverty, on the one hand, and incredible wealth on the other, but have never really seen what exists in between those two extremes. It seems like they are equating "not rich" with "poor," therefore misunderstanding their own concerns and miscommunicating them to the people they love. They are also terrified to lose what they have built up in the belief that living any less luxuriously than they do will take them right back to their days of abject misery. The central problem here, and one that Sona and Ranveer are introduced to address, is balance.

Thanks to their harsh childhood, Dev and Neha have absolutely no idea what a happy, united family looks like, and no idea that this domestic happiness can be achieved with much less money than they have now. Ishwari was on point today with her lecture to Dev. Happiness and sadness don't distinguish between rich and poor, and what makes a man is not how much money he has, but how he treats other people. There's no doubt that Ranveer is a man who should be valued very highly for his integrity and clearly Neha does, but she fears the outcome of his principles. She's not wrong for expressing what she wants, but it does raise the question: does she really know?

Look at Dev. He has discovered so many new things about himself since he surrendered completely to his love for Sona. A man who thought he only cared about business and balance sheets is now enjoying jewelry-shopping because the idea of making the woman he loves happy is so exciting to him. As he said himself, he is just beginning to understand himself. So what everyone understood as his "personality," calculative, workaholic, doesn't ever think of himself, wasn't really Dev at all. It was just what circumstances forced him to be. Now that he has someone with whom he can open up completely, he is discovering a lot of things that had been suppressed for a long time.

In the same way, I don't think "bitter and materalistic," is the real Neha; it is what circumstances have forced her to become, and unfortunately Neha's practicality never allowed her to surrender and trust Ranveer completely the way Dev did with Sona because she faced the far more daunting reality of moving her entire life... the unfair burden of being the woman in the relationship. She never had a chance to discover where her happiness was the way Dev is slowly doing now, and she is still blinded by fear of losing control to the extent that she can't recognise what she herself fell for in Ranveer: his patience, his acceptance, and his self-respect.

That's why Sona's reaction to me was completely justified. She is forcing Dev to be accountable for what he said, what he is assumed, when he says the match between Neha and Ranveer is unequal but theirs was different. Less assumption, more introspection is truly what the Dixits need more of! Think about it for a second... Dev so eaasily said "it's different," but why would it be different with him and Sona? Because he assumes that she is going to come and live with him after marriage, and since money is the primary concern, and he has more than she is used to, she won't have any issues adjusting (we already know that's not true!)? I can totally understand why this is unacceptable to Sona.

She experienced this side of Dev right at the beginning of the show, the one who thought money was the answer to everything, and she did NOT think highly of him. He completely failed to understand what her job meant to her, and showed no compassion in his quest to get her to care for his mother. Sure, circumstances forced her to see different, more vulnerable shades of his personality that led her to understand and love him, and her uncompromising integrity gained his respect and love in turn, but her reaction shows that deep down, her core principles haven't budged an inch and she is just as committed to defending them, in love or not.

Sona and Ranveer have the advantage, even luxury, of knowing exactly who they are because they were given the opportunity and space to find out, and it's no coincidence that Dev and Neha have selected such similar partners. They gravitate towards people who seem imbued with the balance and contentment that they can't seem to pin down, no matter how much they spend on trying!

Amazes me how watching the same twenty-one minute episode..can result in so many different view points.
What amazes me even more is that..the depth with which you have understood each character. .as if they are your own👏😳
Superbly written! Gave a different perspective of the situation altogether👍🏼

Amazing analysis. I guess this is the beauty of our show. It makes us think and question. The tag line of the show kya pate hai kya khote hai jab dil ke faisle dimag se hote hai is slowly shaping up. Lets see dev and neha dil ki sunte hai ya dimag ki.

Very , very well written dear Sam ...if I can call you so. 😊

I specially liked the part where you said the bro-sis duo are not aware of the middle path between extreme poverty and extreme wealth.

Dev has been wealthy all this while but was he really happy ...I don't think he was but he is now. Neither has Neha been ...they will just need to understand where their true happiness lies ... Dev has understood it and so shall Neha.

Sona reacted correctly because no matter what one says ...Dev and her relation will also be judged on this ground in Dev's own home .. RR anyone ???

It is self assumed that if a man is rich , his spouse will automatically be happy as what is there to worry about but there can be many things...what if u have no time ...what if u don't even get to see each other for days due to being busy ...there can be so many things to make a person happy or not happy irrespective of financial status !

Yes money is important but there are people in this world who are happy if they are able to lead a balanced life ...not less...not more ...just sufficient to live stress free !!! That is what Sona meant when she said ...What is the problem in being from a middle class family ?? Are middle class people not happy ...and hence she posed the 2nd question to him...Are u happy ...will u be able to be happy with me...why should she not ask this??? Its a life long relation she is getting into ...she should be on the same page as her life partner ...I for one was very happy she took it on herself as else Dev will not be able to see the whole situation in a different angle she is trying to show to him.

Hopefully the writers shall not disappoint us and we shall like how this pans out.

Thanks! Good observation, the writers have carried out their vision beautifully until now, bringing us to the point we were introduced to in the promos. Dev and Neha are indeed at a crossroads of dil and dimag, and it will be wonderful to watch them choose their paths.

Thanks! Of course you can call me Sam. 😊

Thanks for your insightful response! You make some really good points. Dev hasn't been happy all this time; he has just been going through the motions, driven by the intense need to keep his family far, far away from struggle and poverty. The problem is, his focus has been solely on the material aspect of being comfortable and happy, and he has neglected the emotional side of things. Poverty was such a huge problem in their lives that it seems the siblings have forgotten other kinds of problems can exist too. So they aren't obsessed with money for its own sake, but they do need to understand that it isn't a catch-all solution.

I completely agree with you about Sona... Dev and her relationship will be judged on the same yardstick when everyone learns about it, and Sona is going to have to face a lot of hardship to be a part of Dev's life. RR is the vocal one, but it's not like Ishwari is going to make her life easy either. Contrast that with the reaction to Neha at Ranveer's house; his family is thrilled to welcome her, and the women of the household were so affectionate and thoughtful.

In fact, I think what Neha needs has little to do with money, but even she hasn't figured that out yet. Her real problem, which Dev and Ishwari constantly fail to address, is the lack of acknowledgment for all the work she put in. Dev and Ishwari acknowledge her in private, but in public they credit only each other with their family's success and keep her in a subordinate position. It really hit me when Ishwari called Neha a "baccha" and Dev "bade" when she was admonishing him for fulfilling her zidh. Neha should be Dev's equal in the family! The whole reason Neha fell for Ranveer was because he liked her for her, and acknowledged so many things about her: her courage, her strength, her beauty. Perhaps the real answer to her troubles is to be part of a family that treats her like the leader she is, not like a stubborn child.
