PV OS - CHIDREN OF HER HEART
Aarti was standing in the hotel room looking at her beautiful daughter in her bridal attire. She could believe this was gorgeous young lady standing before her was the little girl that stole her heart when she was just 6 years old. Her heart swelled with love. She loved all her children but somehow this daughter of hers just held that special place in her heart.
"Sweetie, you look gorgeous." she said tearily. "Your mamma is looking down from heaven right now and smiling. We are so proud of you my angel."
The moment got too much for her and she tears spilled down her cheeks as much as she tried to contain it.
"Mamma, please stop. You going to make me cry too."
"Sorry my angel. I just love you so much. I can't believe that you are leaving us. Just know that if you are not happy or if your in laws treat you badly, you will always be welcome back home."
"Ma, please. You know that won't happen." Palak smiled.
"Aunty Tarah and uncle Aaman are your best friends. And you know that Rajesh and I love each other. And besides, they live down the road from our house."
They heard sniffing from behind.
"Oh, Aayu, Palak is going away all the way down the road. How will we survive?"
"I don't know bhaiya. I just don't' know." the two boys mocked.
"Just stop it you two idiots. Don't you have somewhere else to be? Can't you help somewhere" Palak reprimanded her brothers.
"No, we have people for that."
"Don't you worry my angel? Ignore them. Today is your day. You are and will always by my baby girl. And I don't care if it is just down the road, I will still miss you."
"You see Aayu. She only loves her daughters. We don't count at all. She just bore us but otherwise we don't count. We only have a father."
"Yes, bhayia, she won't even miss us when we leave."
""Why don't you put it to the test and leave now" said Palak annoyed with her brothers.
"Pappa!" she shouted for her father.
He was standing on the balcony taking a call.
"Yes, Palak."
"Pappa, Aayu and Ansh are being annoying. They are teasing my Mamma."
"It's not true, Pappa" they said together as their father gave them a stern look.
"Go and see where Payal is please, we need to get done." he said to his sons.
"Yes Pappa. She is probably not even dressed yet." Said Ansh.
"Ansh, you don't upset my Barbie doll. Just ask her nicely to get done ok. Otherwise she will just be upset and take even longer."Aarti said.
"Ok, mamma."
"Aarti, don't make Palak cry. You don't want her to go down all teary and then the groom runs away."
"You are no better than your sons Yash Scindiya."
"Come on love, you know she is happy and she will be with a good family. Give me your perfect smile please love."
She mustered a teary smile and he wiped her tears.
"Are you ready angel? Amaan says we have a very anxious young man waiting for you in the mandap." said Yash
Palak blushed.
As he made her way to the mandap, Aarti could not help thinking of how this precious girl came into her life.
She had had reluctantly agreed to marry him. Her parents, actually her in laws thought it would be the right thing for her Ansh. His father has abandoned and divorced her when she was still pregnant with him. After 5 years she still had hope of a reconciliation with her ex-husband, Prashant. Until the day of the henna ceremony when she went to meet him. He broke her heart once again as he made it clear that he didn't want them, all he cared about getting what he believed was rightfully his. Nothing had changed. And Yash, her now intended husband found her at the mandir and brought her back to the hotel when she fainted.
Even on the day of the wedding, she wanted to cancel. She had found out that her parents had lied to the Scindiyas about her marital status. She wanted to reveal to them that she was not a widow but actually a divorcee. But her father had manipulated her to go through with the wedding. She was terribly unhappy that day. She was marrying a man that was a stranger to her.
And the wedding night. What a fiasco. She was convinced that he had impure intentions. The condoms, the lingerie, the romantic music. What she didn't know then was that the poor man was just as mortified as she was. She smiled. It was her naughty brother in law Prateek that arranged it all. But all with good intentions.
And she loved his girls immediately. But she they were not prepared to make a place in their hearts for her at first. They made sure that both her and Ansh knew that she was not welcome. But soon her Barbie doll was won over. The day that she arranged a party for Palak had been one of the worst days of her life. She had made a bad decision. She should have listened to Shoba-ma. She should never have made those promises to Palak, she should never have tried to be Arpita. It ended with Yash shouting and shoving her and Payal hating her. It still made her shudder. But hearing Payal call her mummy that day was a joy amidst the turmoil of that day.
Palak was determined to not to allow her into her heart. Unbeknownst to her, it had a lot to do with Yash's aunt that sowed seeds of anger and insecurity into her impressionable little head. But still she persevered to win her over, and finally it happened at the competition. She had helped Palak overcome her shyness and helped her speak publicly in an oral competition. And at the end of the speech that Palak made she called her "Aart-mamma" and said "I love you mamma". She could not contain her tears and she ran up to the stage to embrace her daughter. And when she looked at her husband, even he was wiping away a tear. It was really one of the happiest days of her life. This was the day that Palak took that very special place in her heart.
That day started a whole chain of events. The Mumbai trip, the consummation of their marriage, even though she couldn't remember it, her husband's crazy self-punishing behaviour. She would never forget how Ansh and Palak got their dad to give them water so that she could break her fast or how they took money out of their grandfather locker to hire a magician to make him happy and heal him. Finally she went back to her home as he couldn't stand to be around her. He even participated in a boxing match that could have caused his death. Because of this behaviour, she couldn't tell him about the baby she was carrying and chose instead to run away with Ansh.
But he found her and brought her back and since that day things had changed. He had become her husband in the true sense. But she would always regret what she did to those girls when she left them. Once again being abandoned by a mother. But they forgave her so easily and accepted her back. Their only condition was that she never leave again. Her heart was even more sold on them since that day.
Now her girl was getting married. In her heart she knew how happy Palak was. And that she would not be very far from her. But she would not be there every day, she would not come to her with her all her little confidences, she would not come and lie next to her in bed at night till he father had to kick her out every night even now. She wouldn't get those impromptu hugs when she was busy cooking in the kitchen and Palak came in. She loved her so much. She was always more mature than her years and always knew when there was friction between her mother and father and would always try to make it better. And from today she will bless someone else's home. How could she not cry?
And when the wedding was over and Palak had to leave to her in laws, she clung to her mother and the cried for a long time. Finally Yash took over from Palak and hugged his wife and Palak's new husband took her.
"I don't want to go anywhere Yash." Aarti said. It was two weeks since Palak left and she was still on her honeymoon. It was mother's day and all her other children spoilt her. They brought her breakfast in bed and wouldn't let her do anything for the rest of the day. The presents they gave her were awesome. But Palak didn't even call her. She was obviously having such a good time on honeymoon that she forgot all about her mother. She was near to tears all the time.
"Aarti, come please. The kids want to take you out for mother's day. Palak can still call you on your cell phone. Come on sweetheart, they are already saying Palak is your favourite."
"Ok, I will go"
She got ready reluctantly and put a smile in her face and went to lounge to meet the rest of the family.
"Finally, Mamma. How long does it take you to get ready You were even longer than Payal today." said Aayu.
"Hey!" said Payal.
"Stop your bickering. It's my day today and my biggest gift would be for my children to get along. Just for today." Aarti said.
"Fine" Ansh, Aayu and Payal chorused.
They drove to the restaurant. Of course the kids could not keep their promise for very long. She had to giggle. It would not be her kids if they stopped bickering even though they were already adults.
They took her to her favourite restaurant. They had really tried to make this day good for her. They followed the waiter to the table. She was looking down, wiping off a piece of fluff off her saree when she heard
"Happy Mother's day, Mamma"
Her head shot up. Palak and Rajesh were standing right in front of her.
"Palak. What are you doing here? You are supposed to be in Paris on your honeymoon,"
"Ma, do you think your daughter would allow me to keep her away from you on mother's day."
"Oh, my baby." She hugged Palak.
"Thank you, thank you." she hugged her son in law. As usual she had tears in her eyes.
"See Bhayia, only now she is happy." Aayu said making a dramatic heartbreaking face
"Stop your drama Aayu Scindiya. You know you all just gave your mother the best mother day present ever. All of my crazy monkeys together. Come and give your mother a hug." They all huddled in for a hug.
"Come Rajesh, you are one of my kids too now."
And he joined them. Once they were finished their group hug, they walked to the table.
She turned to her husband and whispered in his ear:
"Yash Suraj Pratap Scindiya, you knew about this and you told me nothing. I will never forgive your for this. You are in for world of punishment."
"Aarti Yash Scindiya, I know where your heart lies and I am looking forward to my punishment. Starting as soon as we get home" he winked at her and she blushed.
Every day she thanked God for this wonderful man that loved her so much and was such a magnificent father to her children. His love for Ansh was no less than that of his biological children. And he gave her Aayu and the most precious girls she could have ever hope for. Not her biological children but has always been and will always be THE CHILDREN OF HER HEART.
