Devakshi os: Shades of love

"One black coffee and one green tea." The waiter noted down even before Dev finished his sentence. It wasn't the first time the couple was here. The waiter had been seeing them from the past one year. They always took the corner table and if they ever visited in the morning they would always order a black coffee for Dev and a green tea for Sona. The waiter smiled as he remembered the first time he had seen the couple. Exactly one year back he'd taken the order from them and he remembered how the girl had reprimanded the guy for drinking coffee and then after a lot of argument had she allowed him to order coffee and had asked green tea for herself.
You didn't usually found couples alike. There was something unique about them. They weren't the touchy-feely couples that you usually found in the cafe. The cafe was more like a hide out, a perfect place for young love to visit, not having to bother about anyone catching them. On the other hand this couple he'd noticed were the one's who sat and actually talked, their faces either graced with smiles or frown or anger depending on the situation. But they always managed to resolve any fight they had and always left the cafe hand in hand. Their eyes spoke of the love they had for each other. Oh how he'd seen their love grow.

"So how's Niki's studies going? The last time I heard she seemed to have trouble with statistics. I'd have helped her but you know how busy I've been with my new patients." Sona was the first to initiate a conversation. Usually she loved hearing him talk. He was known to not express his feelings and how verbally challenged he was. But with her it usually felt as if his words seemed to flow. It always gave her a sense of belonging and the feeling that he was hers to love.
"I'm glad you decided not to help. Knowing how horrible you're in math I'm sure Niki would have barely made it." Dev said with a teasing smile, earning a glare from Sona.
"What did I tell you about certain things you're never supposed to do. Like never insult your girlfriend." She reminded him crossing her arms against her chest.
"But you also said be honest. Remember?" He asked sweetly and she huffed.
"Don't act smart."
"I don't need to when I know I am smart." He told cooly loving this banter with her. He loved how her face flushed with anger and her nose turned pink and then she would use her sharp tongue to come up with responses.
"Tumi ekta Mr.Aubhodro" She muttered angrily in bengali as she tucked a few of her ardent curls.
"Ami tomake khub bhalobashi." There he had said it. And like every time her anger melted away. Sona smiled at him and Dev indulgently smiled back at her. She didn't know what it was with the way he said I love you in Bengali but it always managed to calm her down and fall for him all over again. And sadly he knew it too. So he always used it to win fights.

Once the waiter had served them they quietly sat sipping their respective tea and coffe enjoying the comfortable silence that had fallen over. It was quite early in the morning and the hilltop cafe still had fog covered around. Given their busy schedule this was the perfect time for the lovers to meet. As they sat quietly they noticed the people moving around. Students carried their school bags rushing to their early tuitions. The milk man roamed about supplying milk. The paper guy on the cycle threw papers house after house. The tea vendor wheeled his stall to his destination. Young and old people were decked in their jogging suits, earphones tucked in their ears and were enjoying their run. Others were couples like them who were enjoying the quiet and serene atmosphere. All in all it was a good morning.
"Your mom said no didn't she?" Sona asked breaking the silence. She'd finally addressed the real issue why they were here.
Dev fidgeted uncomfortably under Sona's gaze and she looked away sipping her tea.
"I... I tried. But you know her Sona." Dev told her as he tugged at her hand so she could look at him.
"I know." That was all she said as she gazed at him.
"I'm sorry." Dev apologized guiltily. She didn't deserve what he put her through. He felt a stab every time he saw dejection cover her beautiful brown eyes. And it killed him to he know he was the reason behind it. He couldn't even blame his mother for saying no. She had her reasons. Sona wasn't wrong for feeling disappointed either. But she never complained. She always saw it in a positive light and told him to try harder next time. And that attitude of hers always made him feel worse about disappointing her. What the hell did he do to deserve such undying love and patience from her? She could truly have anyone she wanted. Any of the guys in those photos, the perfect Bengali grooms, her mom showed her. But she had stuck to him.
He felt like he was holding her back from getting what she truly deserved. A happy life with a guy who loved her and not someone who had to shoulder so many responsibilities. Responsibilities he'd never be free off.
"Oh god. We're doing this again aren't we?" Sona said in an exasperated tone as she kept her cup down.
"You know you don't have to wait for me Sona. You should listen to your parents and marry someone who could keep you happy." Dev told her softly trying to explain her even though just the thought of Sona being somebody else's sucked the breath out of his lungs.
Sona glared at him without a flicker. Why the hell did she have to fall for this infuriating man? The daft man couldn't understand that it was simply not possible for her to imagine anyone but him beside her. When she'd promised love she'd also promised forever. She was not a college kid who was enjoying the thrill of it. She knew what she was signing up for when she'd fallen for him. She knew he came with a package. Yet the man didn't seem to understand. And this was not the first time he was doing this. It had happened so many times over the year they'd been together. It was high time she did something to teach this boka a lesson.
"Actually you know what? You are right. I think I should listen to my parents and get married. And now that you feel the same thing too..." she trailed off and saw his face fall. He tried to mask his hurt and kept a neutral expression as he nodded his head.
"I mean why should I sell myself short. I deserve better.. I should definetely get married. My mom's been showing me pretty nice grooms of lately. Actually you know what you should help me pick since you know me so well." Sonakshi said with a smile. Dev's mouth fell open and then closed, no word refusing to come out. His tightened fist was the only indication that her words were affecting him.
"Now that we are at it I do remember this particular guy maa told me about a couple of days ago. He's a doctor too and is practicing in Delhi itself. His family is in Kolkata and he stays alone in Delhi. That would be good for me. I don't have to worry about his family intervention. Maybe I should fix a meeting with him sometime this week. You should come too. You can see him and judge him for yourself. Just to see if he's right for me or no. His name is Debashish Datta by the way. See even the surname has a nice ring to it.Mrs. Sonakshi Datta. Nice na?" She pricked him further. She noticed his shallow breaths and ragged breathing and internally smiled. This was his universal sign when he was trying to keep his anger in check. Sonakshi gave herself a mental pat.

A few more blows and bam!!!

"I think he'd be good for me. Did I tell you how I've always wanted to get married on the same day my parents got married? So my parents anniversary is in the coming month. That would be the perfect day. I heard Deb wanted to get married at the earliest. Next month would be perfect. Mom would be so happy. I'm sure the moment I tell her she's gonna start planning the wedding right away. Anyways you'll come to my wedding won't you?" Sonakshi told him as if she couldn't control her excitement and saw his face pale momentarily. He looked like he would pass out any second. Good he deserved it.
"Huh?" He asked as if he couldn't decipher what she'd told him.
"I said you'll come to my wedding won't you?" She repeated again internally laughing at his state.
Dev's jaw tightened, his knuckles turned white with how tightly he'd fisted his palm and gulped before he painfully nodded.
"You're sweet. So sweet. I've never seen anyone more generous than you. I mean where do we find people like you now. People like you should be preserved in museums for their unlimited kindness and giving nature. I'm so sad we can't get married. But Deb won't be that bad I guess. Who knows he might be better than you. It is possible that he is the one I'd always been waiting for. For all we know I could actually get married to him and have a couple of kids and live a happily ever after. Thank you for opening my eyes Dev." With that Sonakshi swiftly stood up and shouldered her bag ready to leave. She was pulled back by Dev who looked like he was ready to burn the whole place down.
"You're getting married to me and only me and you're going to be the mother of my kids. You're MINE.Only mine, get it?" He bit out angrily his eyes fixed with Sona's both blazing with fire.
"Really? But didn't you say you wanted to see me married. You always complain that I never listen to you. But now that I am you have problem with that too." Sonakshi said refusing to be intimated by him.
"You're not getting married to anyone but me. I'll kill any guy who dare comes close to you at 10km radius." He barked angrily his hand gripping her arm tightly.
He suddenly hissed in pain when Sonakshi scratched his hand.
"Where was this anger when you talked about your girlfriend getting married? Why the possesiveness now? Why do you do this Dev? Every freaking time. You get us to where we started. Why?" Sonakshi demanded frustration and angry tears filling her eyes. Dev's expression softened as he gently placed his hands on her arms and looked into her eyes.
"I'm sorry Shona."He told her softly kissing her forehead and caressing her arms trying to cool her down. He slowly made her sit and pulled his chair closer to hers as he took his hand in hers. She simply refused to look at him. He kissed her palms and mumbled sorry alternatively trying to get her to look at him. She exhaled a deep breath and finally turned her face to see his face.
"How many times do I have to tell you? How many times? You're lack of faith in us hurts me more than your mother's disapproval. Why don't you get it? I love you." She told him with a hint of finality.
"I love you. That's it." She told and then gave a resigned sigh.
"I know. I love you too. I love you so much. I'm sorry I behave like an idiot. It's just that Every time I see your disappointment I feel anger and helplessness settle over me. I can't help but feel you deserve better." He said trying to make her see his point.
"You're not disappointing me. It's just the situation. And I don't want better. I want you." She said almost screaming in the end.
"And I want you. I'm sorry for behaving like a loser. As much as I don't deserve you I'm more selfish to keep you with me. I promise I won't ever do it again." He assured her softly kissing her hands.
"You better not. Because the next time you come up with all of your breakup and you deserve better B.S I'm definitely breaking up. And then even if you roll on the ground and kiss the floor I walk and beg me to come back too I won't." She warned him her tone serious.
"I promise no more talks of break up. That topic is closed forever. By the way were you seriously going to marry that deb or whoever if we were breaking up today?" Dev asked his tone a little playful a little jealous.
"Shut up." Sona mumbled angrily and then laughed at the incredulity of the scenario she'd pictured. Dev eventually joined her laughter. They looked at each other and burst out laughing again.
When they'd finally cleared their bill, they got up to leave the cafe. The waiter watched as they walked close by and then Dev effortlessly slid his hand into hers and intertwined their fingers. Sona leaned her head to his arm because it wasn't possible for her to reach for his shoulder and the waitor watched them until they were out of sight.
He shook his head, a silly smile playing on his lips. Aahh...a few colours of love.
