Lovely thots on the detour or the not so-detour..๐In a way I thought you were quoting my words when u quoted J Culler...You actually made me recall one of the best theorists of how to read literary texts... Culler, my all time favourite. ๐A story is all about the treatment...100%...after all what are stories really...its the art of the raconteur that makes one different from the other.Now...as for this story...I am hopeful it is in the treatment that this will differ...I loved Shravan and Ramnath convo yesterday when he said I don't know if i must fear or get upset about what I have turned u into...To be fair...Ramnath was the first man to object to Shravan's way of dealing with Urvashi at the party..He also was quick to tell Shravan yesterday that one woman must not be the cause for him to become cynical about marriage. So Ramnath has not had any grand designs to sully his wife's reputation in Shravan's eyes..its another matter that Shravan was at perhaps an impressionable juncture in life to take a cynical view of the whole episode. I used the misogyny ref in a larger sense to underscore how solitary instances come to be blamed for attitudes when there are actually more and more instances of positive reinforcement for changing one's view.
Yes, he was at an impressionable age so maybe he wasnt able to understand the implications or able to see through different mirrors. Yet, it also asks us why after spending his time in London studying law, having met so many people from across all walks of life.. he wasnt able to find another mirror to address this vexed problem in his life. Yet, he was able to understand Sumo albeit after a while and see that there was more to her than simply running after image. Why not think differently about his mother? So much so that yesterday he did spew literally venom at Sumo and all imaginary women. Why? What kind of mirror was he looking at for all this while and yet he is willing to reformulate his thoughts.Ramnath knows that he created a problem in the figure of Shravan, a big monster in fact, waiting to unleash its fangs๐Yet this character has also time and again surprised us. He is willing to listen to contrarian views when no one is pressurizing him. Though Pushkar did tell him that he did wrong with Sumo, he didnt change his stance about her. He went through this realization by himself... ๐I did not mean a detour as a wrong step...only a different way of presenting a character to the viewer. I do not bracket EDKV with a lot of soaps that use an attitude to aid a story. In that sense Shravan still stands tall above many others in his ability to discern so I am not really looking at the story as a woman reforms man story..San your thoughts were brilliant.. Super๐Detour.. or the main text which one are we following rite now๐
