Pakistan players term 'Om Shanti Om' as a boring film

Sunday, November 11, 2007
KANPUR, India: Pakistan's cricket stars found the much-hyped 'Om Shanti Om' starring Bollywood icon Shahrukh Khan a boring movie.

A team official who accompanied several Pakistani cricketers to watch the blockbuster at a Chandigarh cinema on Friday night told 'The News' that the players were utterly disappointed with the film.

"Neither of the players liked it at all," Pakistan team's spokesman Ahsan Hameed Malik said. "They went see the movie thinking that it would be really nice but found it to be quite a waste for time," he added.

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik, vice-captain Younis Khan, wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal and fast bowlers Umar Gul and Rao Iftikhar Anjum went to watch Om Shanti Om after having initially planned to see Sanjay Leela Bhansali's much-touted magnum opus 'Saawariya'.

They wanted to make the most of an off day in trendy Chandigarh ahead of their third one-dayer against India here in Kanpur on Sunday (today).

Dr Malik said that one of the reasons why Pakistani players found the movie boring was the theme of rebirth. "We in Pakistan somehow cannot find this theme very convincing and most of the players dismissed the movie as soon as they realised it was about rebirth and all," he added.

While the Pakistani cricketers, most of whom are self-confessed Bollywood fans, rejected Om Shanti Om as a bogus movie, the verdict of the Indian film buffs was completely different. The box office seems to favour Om Shanti Om as the King Khan's film registered 90 percent occupancy across India on its Diwali release.

'Om Shanti Om' is director Farah Khan's tribute to the colourful and vibrant cinemas of the 70s. The movie has Shahrukh as a new avatar, going shirtless and displaying his six-pack abs. Most experts believe that it would turn out to be a bigger hit than SRK's recent blockbuster Chak de India, a movie that revolves around an Indian women's hockey team. —KH

Its not a film I plan on watching more than twice. I'd rather watch the scenes I enjoyed again than the film in its entirety. OSO was basically a parody on the film industry so the comedy and mimicry was necessary. It was never promoted as anything but a time pass, comical, entertaining flick. It was full of Bollywood cliches just like MHN, sans any real logic but thats what the film is all about. 😆
