the oye hero was too good.

and the jawline. now what to say.

he was genuinely flummoxed by akash's take on that feeling of his... to him it was a deal. and i believe it will at one level always remain so.

in 369, how they messed it with him telling her she is all that matters, she taught him about love... pat trite words. would he ever say that? i bet he'd bury his face in her hair and mutter, "okay... then there was sheila, manika, esmeralda, induvati, pammi, eena meena..." and scene would end on ladki struggling to get out of that embrace and failing miserably, happily. i can see brown eyes glinting and getting lost. i can see fair arms pushing and then clutching wide shoulders.

that akash and bhai poolside supposedly urbane bro talk. unreal. who was writing this stuff.

of course, there was nooo question of watching him fumble through jalebi making attempt, the "cuteness" note high and sending shivers. he doesn't fumble. bas.

pray for me, i am doing 371 today.

baankelal ji vs arnav ji
episode 370

"aap bhi na, baankelal ji! bade woh ho..."
oh you, baankelal ji, you're very... that. (some things just can't be translated, 😆 )

paanwale all set to le jao jalebiya. is arnav ji prepared for battle?
meet khushi ji and her purana chakkar.

but why did khushi ji prefer arnav ji over baankelal ji?

could it be because apart from suddenly discovering that his lean mean hotness and dark penetrating brown eyed stares/glares revved her from haule haule to dhak dhak in no time, khushi ji also felt arnav ji regarded her as something almost no one ever did?

he leveled with her and looked upon her as a person.

not bitiya, bahuriya, behena, biwi... but as that what he always called her.

khushi.

usska ek naam hai. she has a name, he'd snapped once. and he also refused to let her hide behind any "role" as such, especially that of the "good girl." always challenging her, pushing her, almost goading her to find out more about who she was, be everything she could be.

oh it wasn't always rosy and pretty...
aap bhi na, arnav ji! bade what the ho.

he was nasty as hell, a miracle she withstood that in your face, male, mocking, most obnoxious behaviour. but she did. and he had to notice the rhythm of his heart, his longing, his faraq. even while he plied her with, alas, not juicy meetha paan...

but fresh sweet red and bleeding heartache that, sitting in his nukkad in shantivan, only he could make so perfectly... especially that "shadi kar raha hai" and "shadi karni hogi" with the added flavour of "koi matlab nahin" and "faraq padta ha kyunki."

oh he found in chhai maheene, six months, more than barah tareeke ke, twelve kinds of, heartache. after this marathon wooing, khushi ji had to say no to her purana chakkar "moochhon se bhara chehra" and accept the perfect stubble as her pati on whom she had huq.

in the meantime the story became "meant nothing" to the story tellers.

yet arnav ji and khushi ji never forgot their rangeen kal, colourful yesterday. when i see certain scenes from what's coming up, i still sigh and reach for a paan. this one here was so perfect amid the sheetal slush. that fight between them at diwali: takes akal, himmat, and confidence which you don't have... i know it's designed to take us to mrs india ugh, but arnav ji and khushi ji couldn't care less, they were being absolute lovers. delightful.

she found him a new name beginning with k too. kurram khan.

on karwa chauth the tycoon gave her, no not diamonds, but a company, just in case he isn't around she must never have to depend on anyone. he called her the coolest person he knew and meant it. she fretted about being fat, he said she was... and then said put on some more weight... there were many times i wanted to cry or laugh or giggle the way i always had at ipk and moments where i could see the relationship clearly grow, both these cool people finding their way into a chakkar that is forever.

jalebi making became a metaphor for something no paan could ever hope to be.

i am so glad khushi ji chose arnav ji, maybe baankelal ji will have some time for me now.

***

there was something about the way he felt for her, saw her, wanted her. a specific arnav singh raizadaness to it. when she was worried sick about sheetal, and said very clearly even the kid bothers her, i had hoped they'd delve into how khushi needs and wants her arnav ji. not just in that prescribed way of the good wife, but in the way only khushi can want him... the girl who called him laad governor, the man who made her feel things she never thought she would. i enjoyed her getting a bit sick with jealousy.

i enjoyed the baankelal interlude with khushi in top filmi form even though yeah, again the writer denigrated her with a story involving a paanwala which is patently not possible, khushi is capable of concocting a fairly believable tale... sanaya made the scene work.

what i thought felt like khushi is the way she handled her unease. she had to talk gibberish possibly just to deal with that rage of jealousy. i honestly find sheetal unbearable, so the scenes with her close to asr bothers me as much as it upsets khushi, har baar, really. her snarly "meant nothing" comeback was nice, her seething, i too am very "cool" made me grin... honestly, he was acting too tra la about that girlfriend boyfriend thing (okay, i know asr never had a gf, but still)...

so yes, this scene had something about it.

and yet, there was a meh feeling as i watched the episode. i could sense there was no real story here, just time pass. i wonder even now why sheesh mahal was never returned to.

P.S: Khoosie bitiya's paanwala interlude was cute, its only because of sanaya we probably sat through it, because of that unique khushi vibe that she brought to it.

yes, only because of sanaya that paanwala sequence could be watched... the "khushi vibe" that only she is capable of.

poolside and an almost...
episode 371

asr sits in the hall watching football.

the moment khushi meets a kid who is somewhat like arnav ji in his ways and has diabetes and whose mother once was arnav ji's saheli, she decides this just might be his son.

so is that how much khushi loves arnav ji?

and is that really the grim man who has no time for anything but work?

can a woman from a small town meet a man from the big city when she by accident lands up on the catwalk of his show and falls into his arms after tripping on a dupatta?

may seem a little far fetched, but stranger things have happened and many future lovers meet in the unlikeliest of circumstances... so yes, this might happen.

but after that meeting and going through everything they have, would khushi instantly jump to a suspicion like this.. completely doubting her arnav ji? this is just unreal.

and so i am having a huge problem with this whole thing. and then in the middle of it all akash coos, "aisa nahin lag raha ki bhai ke bajoo mein junior bhai baithe hain?"

doesn't it look as if junior bhai is sitting next to bhai?

first, since when has akash become so gooey? and second, how many obvious dialogues are needed to get us to the point.. we get it.

i am beginning to get really uncomfortable now.

this is preposterous. it was never the sheetal track as we keep calling it... it was asr's son track.. asr's lack of morality track... asr's extreme irresponsibility track... asr might be like his pita ji track... it was pretty sick really.

and it was such a terrible blow to two characters and a story and a romance built with love and interest and care even while keeping the commercial aspects in mind.

i am suddenly angry.

a bizarre good and bad khushi talk ensues, then an invitation... she wants sheetal and her son to stay with them so she can find out if her suspicion is justified.

i can't believe this is happening. there is a wilful violence almost in this act.

several months ago on a terrace asr had jumped to a conclusion and acted in a manner we all knew was not correct. but we also knew, they had barely started their relationship... he had just begun to feel something, or rather identify it as "faraq" though he had felt stuff for a while now. he didn't know her too well and there was that uncertainty and tremulousness of the first days of faraq. his heart had shattered at what he saw... or thought he saw.

plus there was his love for his sister and the roiling caused by the fact that the man involved was none other than a man he trusted and his sister adored, his jija ji.

even then, his action was in essence not right. though we felt him suffer as well.

but now.

now khushi and asr are at a different point in their lives. love apart, trust has been given and earned.

so how can khushi even begin to think like that? i can understand her being jealous of sheetal, his ex girl friend... but this is not about that really is it? she is convinced asr is aarav's father... she has somewhere decided this and is doing an investigation that will work to prove her hypothesis.

how could writers even think of this idea?

so what is the value of trust then in a relationship? and this was not just any relationship... it was one built through much and valued by many. it had something real in it. honest.

that is badly blighted now.

and anyway, khushi is not mad. though that is how writers are presenting her.

the whole setting up of the question... is asr aarav's father... is done in the most childish and silly fashion. every member of the family is tasked with saying how the two are similar... mami and akash actually say aarav is like his son.

even nani is made to say foolish things... he eats toast just like chhotey.

huh?

and so we see how poor khushi has no option. she had a little trepidation upon seeing the similarities but now that everyone is talking about it, she poor girl is being almost pushed into giving this thought credence.

sorry, this doesn't work... by showing khushi behaving in this fashion, no matter how many potlifuls of cuteness you may throw in, you are actually marring her character.

no, sorry writers and directors, just because you showed so called funny things and played funny music, this thing didn't become right. and as i said, you didn't absolve khushi of responsibility by making her act cute and behave like she has no mind of her own.

this is khushi... dammit.

and that is arnav ji.

she does not suspect him of being a kid's father just like that.

if she does, this love story starts suffering terribly. make sheetal chudail and you have a winner maybe, but go down this path and you hurt something precious.

thanks to mano darling we get to know sheetal is a single mother exactly as asr had thought and without being melodramatic or judgmental...

his anger feels clean...

her lack of faith in him, just not right.

somehow this suspecting asr feels more terrible to me than even the madness of the shadi karni hogi night.

at the poolside, i like what he says about why he doesn't want sheetal living with them. he spells it out, she is his ex gf... what was the need for this, she could have stayed in a hotel.

in an effort to make her understand, the so cute, "pehle pehle jab nk tumhe bahut attention diya karta tha toh main jealous feel karta tha..."

in the beginning when nk used to pay you too much attention i used to feel jealous.

yeah, the back of the head, instinctive possessive jealousy you feel for someone you consider yours, i can imagine him feeling that. not because he thinks nk is a potential threat... just that, she's out of bounds. territorial alpha male kahinke.

"bahut awkward ho jaayga..." it'll become very awkward... he is right.

then seeing her face, he thinks it's all to do with khushi's caring nature... she felt bad to hear aarav has diabetes. he only sees her best side... which i would think is natural... he used to "tum jaisi ladki" her all the time, but now he knows better...

khushi rests her head on his shoulder indicating she is feeling bad for aarav and arnav ji has read her right but all along she is scheming and wondering how to get it out of him... that they slept together. had sex.

because it was barun and sanaya i watched.

when she asks him what he did with sheetal, he asked, "matlab?"

meaning?

loved that reply and look. as she kept pushing, the exasperated, "what's the matter with you!"

the interrogation was relentless and flummoxing. finally he deadpanned, "gadi mein hum football khelte the..." we used to play football in the car.

he knew she was asking something else, he just didn't know what, "khushi, what's the matter with you.. kya poochhna chah rahi ho tum?"

khushi, what's the matter with you? what do you want to ask?

at last she almost asked at the spot where they once almost kissed "kya sheetal ji aur aap ne..." did you and sheetal...

what's that cheesy yeah yeah music, i am thinking. raju singh? surely not.

"akele mein... jalebiya?"

all by yourself... khushi ventured, then balked and pulled in her saviour... jalebi.

he got it.

or maybe not.

he cut in with that totally killer, no, he hasn't had jalebi with anyone but her.

it was hard to watch the episode. it was telecast first on 24 october 2012, on a wednesday, there's a filler quality to it. the same thing being repeated again and again.

Reading your take, I'm wondering what you guys who followed the show when it was air must've felt when all this came on. An absolute disrespect isn't it, towards one's own creation, if you could say so. Even I who watched after it had gone off air, had felt what the.. when these episodes came on. When one is obsessively watching something with the barest of food and sleep that one can manage with, and it comes down to these one does feel let down😆
These don't touch me, maybe a few moments here and there. And yes, it was only because of these two actors that one continued to watch

kizh,

barest of sleep it was, even if not barest of the other thing. it was fairly traumatic. on the one hand story was in a shambles and such bizarre things onscreen. on the other that whole horrid fiasco about barun resigning... is ipk going to stay or go... 4 lions starting forum 32 and the story has run its course or whatever nonsensical stuff.

i was just thinking, going through these episodes is painful again, i hadn't thought it would be quite as unsettling this time.

just realised why the son of asr track is so shockingly insulting. casually pick up a trope (hate the word, that's why using it) from the television serial recycling bin and chuck it into a show that is being obsessively followed by women of every age and kind across the world, wherever there's telecast... reduce lead characters to what no one knows and all the while keep the drama re barun up... after all he is the star that keeps everyone here.

the gross disrespect and almost sadistic streak shown by the production house at this point was unbelievable. even the channel.

this is 24 october. by 30 november ipk would end. rumours are flying madly about. no clarifications. no answers. suddenly sheetal enters with a strange little boy. on parallel tracks, one on screen, the other off it here in real life... a crazy denouement plays out.

when i recall the number of phone calls to sp i made, the ridiculous emails, actually got my husband to contact a friend of his who was in the tv business to ask if there's anything one can do to stop the channel from killing the show, he must have laughed very loudly that day. was kind enough to tell jacob tv is a game of numbers, if trp isn't there nothing can be done... letters from viewers don't really matter.

i was one of the women who called sp relentlessly to find out the status of barun's departure, and when they confirmed it looked like he would go... i was among those who called repeatedly to say, in which case they must end the show.

bizarre, right? i was 52 then. had never been a serious watcher of any show before that.

haven't seen a single serial after that.

it was painful. very.

i think blast from the past helped me stay sane... really, at one level, it did. maybe that's why i need to finish this trip. with integrity. ipk gave me a lot.

You know at times I can't believe I did that. Now almost three years down the line, I feel maybe it was something that was meant to happen. I've heard people say that it helped or they got into it at a difficult time. In some ways it was for me too, or I like to think maybe that's why I fell for it so much. For one thing I'll forever be grateful though, that is finding this space and all of you. No I have never obsessively followed a serial before this nor do I think I will again, unless they come back to do a show together😆
