The back story is need or even a flashback.
Apu was not locked up since birth, she was around 5 or 6, i think Apu being a vishkanya have more to do with that accident, something major happen that Kalpana has such hatred for the Mittal family, the suspense is killing me.

There is no need to reveal too much of the backstory just a little because the mystery is what is keeping fans interested.
