PROLOGUE
Angry clouds were thundering above my head, threatening a downpour any second. A lazy wind was making my hair fly in my face. My short summer clothes did nothing to warm my chilled limbs. The trees of the neighbourhood were swaying in the wind. Almost everyone seemed to have retreated into their houses and it seemed strange to see the streets so deserted so early in the afternoon. The playground itself, from whence I was coming, had looked gloomy and dull in the absence of the irritatingly cute toddlers that always populated it usually at this time of day.
I was walking quickly, stepping on the dry leaves as I went, crushing them under the soles of my feet, the resulting crunch making me grin with glee. Overhead, a large black crow followed my movements closely, hopping from one tree to another in close pursuit, tilting its head at me. I ignored it; it had been lurking around me for the past two weeks, appearing at my window, at the playground as I soared high on my favorite swing set, at school while I played football with my friends. Even following me to the nearby mandi as I ran an errand for my aunt-turned-adopted-mother.
As I jumped around on the road, decimating the blanket of already dead leaves under my sneakers, another crunching sound reached my ears. It was coming from behind me, someone else's rather heavy feet falling lazily on the leaf-strewn road. I froze.
I knew who it could be. Kamya from the next block. We always loved sneaking up on people and blowing in their ears to scare them out of their wits. I grinned. She couldn't outwit me.
In a second, I had turned around on the spot, ready to stick my tongue out at her in triumph and claim haughtily that no one could scare me. But when I locked my gaze onto the man in front of me, my blood turned cold.
He could have been more than twenty years old. But his eyes had the deranged look of a man who had spent years in hell, some torture seemed to twisted his face into one of a madman. His eyes were wide open, glaring into mine, his hair unkempt. His clothes were heavy with dirt and dried blood. He was breathing heavily, mouth twisted into a psychotic grin. It seemed as if he had just run a marathon, his eyes ablaze with exhilaration.
I shivered, goose bumps quickly cropping up all over my arms. My body was humming, my brain yelling at me to run and run fast. But I was fixed on the spot, horror turning my muscles immobile.
Under my terrified gaze, the madman advanced towards me, his lips widening into an evil smirk. The skin under his eyes seemed to turn blacker, cracks appearing there. His eyes darkened over with some strange kind of hunger. And then he opened his mouth, his lips pulling back to reveal a set of yellowed, sharp... fangs.
The scream caught in my throat. Al that issued from my mouth was a hoarse croak. My legs moved of their own accord as I swung my body around and started running. But I should have known it was useless. In less than a second, he had caught up with me, picked me up and clamped his dirty hand over my mouth, pressing my back to his chest as his arms brutally held me up. I thrashed around with my feet, beat at him with my arms. But it was no use.
I could feel his teeth on the sensitive skin of my neck. My heart was pounding loud enough to burst out of my chest. The sharp teeth dug into my skin, plunging into my veins, the pain excruciating. I screamed behind his hand but the sound was muffled. I could feel him draining my neck of all the blood, siphoning more from the rest of the body. It muddled up my head, the pain and loss of life force. My eyelids drooped, my arms and legs hung lifelessly from my body. I was about to faint when he dropped me, a loud yelp escaping his blood-filled mouth.
As I lay on the cold street, the first drops of rain falling on my cold, sweaty body, I watched a man in all black clothes beat up the madman. My eyes threatened to close, my head felt light and nausea filled up in my chest. But I forced myself to keep looking, to stay awake. I watched the man in black beat the madman ruthlessly and then rip his heart out with his bare hands. But I was probably just hallucinating. It was just impossible for anyone to do that. Right?
As the madman's lifeless body fell to the ground, I smiled. The monster was dead. Now I could die too. I let my eyes close, let the darkness overtake me.
And then I felt it. Warm liquid trickling into my mouth. A hand over my lips. Was I drinking blood? I opened my eyes slowly. To a pair of midnight black orbs, staring at me concernedly.
"Are you okay?" a velvet smooth voice asked me.
I shook my head slowly, the blood seeming to energize me slowly. I gulped it down more quickly. A soft finger caressed my cheek as I drank.
"What's your name?" the voice asked.
Between deep gulps, I managed to say, "Khushi."
The hand moved away. "That's enough now."
I took a deep breath, trembling as I realized what I had been really doing. I sat up, removing myself from his arms, my heart beating fast again. My eyes settled on the body not far from me. Staring at it with a glassy stare, I whispered, "What was that?"
He didn't say anything for a long moment. I moved my gaze to scan his face. His jaw was taut, as if he was debating whether to tell me or not. Finally, he spoke up, uttering one simple word which sent chills down my spine.
"Vampire."
