FOREVER
"I can't do this Jeevika!" opposed Viren.
"You should Viren",she retorted.
"Look,I'm not doing this!" he said sternly sitting on the bed with his palms covering his pale face.
"C'mon! you have to" she said holding some papers right in front of his face.
He looked at her desolated. "Is this his Jeevika? The one who loved him unconditionally? The one who stood by him, no matter what happened? Is this her?" The questions haunted him severly.
"C'mon Viren sign them now!" she was so determined, holding out the papers.
He couldn't handle this anymore. He burst out. Pouring his feelings through sharp words. "How can you do this to me Jeevika? You can't end our relationship like this. I mean..." he stuttered "I mean I can't live without you and you know that."
"You can't live without me huh?" she laughed sarcastically. "Don't try to fool me with this fake love of yours Viren. I'm not gonna fall for this. Never!"
"Fake? Seriously? My love seems fake to you now?" pain was evident in his voice.
"Are you gonna sign these divorce papers or not Viren?"
"Over my dead body!" he said pulling the papers from her, tearing and scrunching them.Silence filled the room as he left banging the door. She stood blank.
"Relax Jeevika! Please sit down!" he tried comforting her."I'm scared Viren" tears rolling down her eyes,"What if our parents reject our proposal?"
"Please be positive Jeevika! I'm sure they'll accept our relationship. It's been 3 years since we started to fall for each other and our love has grown strong all this time. And I'm sure we're meant to be with each other",he hugged her stroking her hair to calm her."You want a coffee?" he asked while wiping away her tears,"You know, everything gets better with a coffee".She nodded with a slight smile.
"Here's your coffee",she placed the hot cup on the table beside the bed. He stretched out and took the cup while looking at the clock which showed 7:30 AM. She took her purse and was about to leave. "Where are you going?" he asked sipping his hot coffee. "To the temple" she replied without looking him.
"Anything special today?".
"Two years ago, we married on this same day" she said looking at him coldly.
His hands went through his ruffled hair while his lips remained pressed until he said "I'm sorry...I"
"There's no need for any explanation.",she left making him feel more guilty.
"Don't you feel it's necessary for me to explain certain things before we get married?",asked Viren playing with Jeevika's fingers as she rested her head on his shoulder."Things? What kind of things?" she inquired innocently looking at him."About our suhaag raat...how many kids we should have and...", before he could complete, she hit his shoulders hard."Shut up Viren!"."Why? What's wrong in this? We're officially engaged now and it's high time we discuss abouth these things now." he winked at her."Stop it Viren",she fought hard to hide her blush. He embraced her placing a soft kiss on her hair."Oh! It's getting late,Beeji will be searching for me.I need to go now.Bye!" she said untangling herself from his grip."Please stay for some more time!" pleaded Viren holding her hands."Just wait for 10 more days, after that I'm all yours!" she said kissing his forehead. He smiled and wished her a "Good night" before letting her go.
"Good Morning Beta! And wish you a happy anniversary" said Vanshika hugging Viren. "Thank you Maa!"
"Where's Jeevika?" she searched for her bahu as Viren was getting ready for his office. "Umm...she's gone to the temple". "And you didn't go with her?" inquired Vanshika. "Maa, I have a meeting today" he said fixing his coat. "No Viren! This is bad. It's your anniversary today and you should be spending time with Jeevika instead of spending time with your job".
"I know, but this meeting is really important Maa!" he said holding her arms. "Important than your wife huh?". He had no answer to this. Vanshika cupped his face, "Viren, I know things are not fine between you both, but if you don't sort it out it's gonna change your life miserably. Hope you understand". She patted him and left, alone with his thoughts.
"And finally you're Mrs.Vadhera now!" he said welcoming her to their room. She glanced at the neatly decorated room in awe.He hugged her from behind "You like it?" his lips heating her senses as he kissed her shoulder." I love it!" she said blushing. He turned her to face him. "I love you Jeevika!",he said pressing his lips on her forehead.A lone tear of happiness escaped from her eyes.
"Hey you ok?",he was taken aback seeing her response."Will you love me like this forever Viren?" she asked him tenderly. He cupped her face,"You think I'll not?".She smiled."Our love is forever Jeevika! I mean Mrs.Vadhera" he said nudging his nose with hers.
"Mrs.Vadhera?" the voice of the receptionist shook her out of her thoughts."Yes" she responded quickly."You may go in now" said the young lady with a smile.Jeevika smiled back and proceeded towards the door which held the board 'Dr.Meera Sabharwal'.
"Good morning Mrs.Jeevika!",the doctor greeted her with a bright smile."Good morning doctor" she pasted a smile on her face."So,how's your health now?".Jeevika just gave a nod as a response."I can understand your pain Jeevika, but fate is inevitable." "But the worst part is my fate is just too bad",said Jeevika trying to hold back her tears. The doctor got up from her seat and went near Jeevika."Why don't you tell your husband about this? I'm sure it'll bring a relief to you." the doctor assured her."No doctor! It'll add on to my stress. I can't imagine disclosing about this to him. I can't..." her tears started to flow involuntarily. The doctor patted her and gave her a glass of water.
"Jeevika!Jeevika!" shouted Viren at the top of his voice."Haan Viren!Just 2 more minutes" said Jeevika while plating his breakfast."I'm running late already.I'll order the breakfast at my office" he said taking his laptop bag and ready to leave.Jeevika came rushing with his breakfast."I'm not gonna leave you unless you finish this" she said making him sit and holding the plate before him."Jeevika!" he made a puppy face, while she frowned at him."I know how to make you eat" saying so she fed him the food."Wow! The food is more delicious today! Must say, your hands have a magic power my dear wifey" he winked at her.Jeevika blushed. After a scrumptious breakfast he was about to leave,"Will try to come home soon.Love you!Bye!" he said placing a peck on her cheeks. She bid him a good-bye and stood near the door, catching his presence till the last.
"Sir! The meeting is about to begin." said Rosy,Viren's secretary. "Sir?" she called out again as he didn't respond." Huh?" he looked at her confused."The meeting is about to begin" she repeated.Viren rubbed his forehead."Rosy,I'm not feeling well,so just cancel the meeting" he said closing his laptop."But sir,it's very important.Everyone is waiting for you." she said softly. "Oh please! I'm not in the mood for attending any meeting now.Just reschedule it.Ok?" he raised his voice."Ok sir.",said a terrified Rosy.He packed his bag, took his car keys and left. His concentration was not focussed on the road as he was driving rather it was on Jeevika;her changing behaviour.Thousands of memories flooding his mind, right from their first meeting till the small mere conversation that took place in the morning.Things have definitely changed. He stopped the car as he saw her favourite pink roses tied together in a bouquet shop.He bought them for her.He was not sure whether these roses could bring his Jeevika back; his old Jeevika.
"Are you ok?", he inquired rubbing her back. She mumbled "Yes". "Are you hiding anything from me Jeevika?" he was scared to see his wife like this, pale and emotionless."Hiding? No! Not at all." she assured."Then why are you upset lately? If there's any problem please say it to me" he begged her."I'm fine Viren." "No you're not!" he reprimanded."Yes I am!",her voice was not soft anymore."Why are you acting strange? You are not like this" he said caressing her shoulders. She moved away only to face away from him."So you're saying I'm mad? Do I sound like a mad woman to you now Viren?" she shouted."I never said so",said a concerned Viren."Just now you said I'm acting strange! What do you mean by that? What do you find so strange about my behaviour?" she posed her questions crossing her arms and looking at him for an answer."This! This anger of yours! This baseless arguement of yours! It's strange Jeevika! Don't you feel it?" he held her arms strong trying to prove his point. She didn't respond instead she just pushed him slightly and moved out of the room, leaving behind a confused Viren.
He opened the door of their room slowly hoping to catch her sight. But she was not there. He placed his bag on the table, the bouquet on the bed and went inside the washroom. After a couple of minutes Jeevika came inside. She took the bouquet slowly and inhaled it's fragrance which relished her beautiful moments with Viren. She sensed that he was close to her and yes he was very close to her, standing behind her, engulfing her in a back hug and resting his chin on her shoulders murmuring "Happy Anniversary Mrs.Vadhera!".She looked down.Viren who was awaiting her reply, broke the hug and turned her to face him.Her eyes were still glued downwards. He held her chin up and was shocked.Tears flowing uncontrallably from her eyes. His heart ached. He swept it off her face and hugged her.She responed by hugging him more tightly.
"Shh Jeevika! It's ok! Calm down!",he rubbed her back. She was still crying harder, clenching his shirt. He made her sit down."What happened?" asked Viren. She didn't answer."C'mon Jeevika you're scaring me!Please say whatever it is."She looked at him and decided to speak up.With no expressions on her face she said "I'm dying Viren." The world stopped a moment for him as he heard those words."I have leukemia...I'm gonna die soon...I'm not gonna be with you forever Viren...This is our last anniversary together..." her voice trailed as she said the last line.It was their last anniversary.Viren's mind refused to process those words. How he wished this to be a nightmare; a worst nightmare. He stood up with tears wanting to flow out of his eyes, his hands running through his hair.He felt as if he was the one dying.
"When did you find about this?" the only words that came from him."Three months back" she said with a guilt."Oh! So that's why you needed a divorce, isn't it?All of your fake arguements was just to hide this matter and create a rift between us so that we can part ways and you can die in peace and I'll be unaware of it my whole life.Isn't it Jeevika?" his words felt like piercing her."No Viren! I was scared.I was scared to tell you about this.I know you love me more than yourself. Also I know that you'll be the most affected one with this news.I don't want to see you suffer.I can't see you like that." Before she could finish,he hugged her and cried his heart out."Why Jeevika? Why? Why did you give me this punishment as a gift for our anniversary?" his voice was breaking."This is my fate Viren! I have to leave you."she said hugging him tighter. He pulled her "No! I'm not gonna leave you! Never!" he was strong. She hugged him back.
It was 11 P.M. Jeevika was sleeping on his lap and Viren was caressing her hair. The thought of losing her was unbearble to him.He cursed God for making them go through this.He had one hour left, just one hour was left for their last anniversary to end.Last anniversary...it broke his heart. He wanted to be with her forever. He slowly placed her head on the pillow, covered her with a blanket and left the room.He went to the kitchen and started to make her favourite strawberry cheesecake. He wrote "Happy Anniversary Forever" with the icing.Tears rolled down as he wrote each and every word.He cleaned the place and left to their room.It was 11:50 P.M. "Jeevika!Jeevika" he called out slowly. She stretched a bit and squeezed her eyes and saw Viren holding her favourite cake with a forced smile behind his tears."Happy Anniverasry again Mrs.Vadhera" he smiled. She too did the same. They blew off the candle together and cut the cake, and started feeding each other."Thank you Viren!" she said hugging him."I'm sorry I didn't even do anything for our last..." he stopped her."You could do one thing." he said.He pulled out a paper and a pen from the side drawer and handed it to her."Can you write me a love letter Jeevika?" he asked her.She was not in the state of writing. But how could she deny it? She has to do something other than giving him more pain coz of her disease. She smiled and started to write.
"Dear Viren,
I always wanted to write you a love letter, but never in my life I thought I'd write in a situation like this. Our's may not be the perfect love story, but I couldn't have asked for more, coz this was perfect to me,you were perfect for me! Like many couples we also met one fine day, started our relationship as friends and found love in each other. The time I realised that I fell in love with you was the best moment ever in my life.I still can't believe the fact that we made our parents say 'Yes' to our relationship. Each and every ritual of our marriage made our love grow stronger. And yes becoming Mrs.Vadhera,my dream was also fulfilled. Thanks to god! Being your wife,I got to know you more, your naughtiness, your wierd allergies, your favourite food, your habits. The list goes on.You are my soul mate, not only this birth but in all of my births. We have loved, hugged, kissed and also fought, but we were "US"! I love you Viren! I love you forever!"❤️
She placed a kiss on the last love letter she wrote and handed it to him.But he folded it and kept it inside the drawer."Are you not gonna read that?" she asked."Not now!" he said. She understood. He was preserving it for the future. The future without her.The future with her memories.
PS: I wrote this OS months back but never posted it afraid of the response, coz it's way out of my league. Is it ok? Also the red fonts are flashback scenes and black fonts are the present scenes, incase if anyone's confused. Criticisms are welcomed. And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!😃
