One week had passed...
They never met again.
Geet was prepared to give him a piece of her mind this time...but she almost forgot about the incident, however, the arrogant boy got somewhere settled in the back of her mind. She hated him.
...It was Sunday. Geet was alone at home with her best friend and neighbour Meera. The girls chatted about school and other stuff, they made lemonades for themselves and were enjoying the warm sun in the garden with their Teen Queen magazine. Suddenly, Meera got an idea, and pulled Geet inside.
"What are you doing?
"It'll be fun."
Geet was apprehensive, but it turned out to fear when Meera pulled her into her step mum's dressing room.
"Geet sit here," Meera pushed her on the sofa and checked the dresser for things.
Geet was speechless out of shock and excitement. It was once her mum's room, and after her death she hardly entered it. The paintings drawn by her mum were stacked into a bunch and placed at the bottom most shelf of the almirah in that room.
"I'll do your make up"
"What?" that is when her reverie broke.
"Make up! silly, it'll be fun."
"No please! Are you mad? Let us get out from here."
"Geet you are a girl, just because you don't have your mum doesn't mean you'll stifle your little desires."
Tears filled her eyes on her loss, and her heart crunched.
"Please let's just go out."
"No, now stop acting like a good girl, and yaar thodi bahut naughtiness toh chalta hai."
Geet smiled at her best friends antique.
"Wow, that means a yes."
She didn't wait for an answer and dived into the stash of a lot of colourful cosmetics.
First she did Geet's hair, then her eyes and then her lips.
"Now show off, and let's do a catwalk of our own."
"We are so gorgeous."
Geet laughed.
They both catwalked in front of the huge mirror, blew kisses and pouted and were having a lot of fun.
"Geet!! "
She stopped in her step, and held her breath in utter horror.
"What are you doing here in my room?" asked Manpreet her step mum.
Geet turned, and Meera was just gaping.
"M..mm...woh...woh..."
"Please don't say anything, main sab samajh gayi."
"I am sorry," Geet apologized controlling the tears ready to form in her eyes.
"Geet, I don't mind you using my things, after all you are like my daughter, but mujhse pehle puchna chahiye tha na."
"Aunty but..." Meera was about to intervene, not liking the tone of Manpreet accusing her best friend, but Geet stopped her.
"We are sorry. This won't happen again."
"It's okay."
Geet held Meera's hand and was about to leave, when Manpreet called her...
"Geet, I am so tired, please can you do the dishes?"
Meera narrowed her eyes and looked at Geet, but Geet simply nodded and left.
...
"Geet, what was that? Why did you accept to do the dishes? Tujhe toh aaj shop pe jaana than na."
"Yaar, she is tired, and yeh mera bhi ghar hai, and she is like my mother."
"Oh puh-leez. What about her daughter?"
"Meera I am going to do the dishes, main tujhse baad main milti hoon."
"Theekh hai Cindrella."
"Cindrella???"
Meera rolled her eyes in irritation and leaves.
...
Maan was in the gym practicing his karate with his instructor. His mum came and asked him to take it slow on his body.
"Ma, mujhe strong banna hai. I don't want to be dependent on others for anything."
"Okay...ab chalo dada dadi London jaa rahe hai, and they want to meet you before leaving."
"Ma aap chalo, main aata hoon."
He cleans himself, takes a nice shower, and puts on his formal pants, full sleeve shirt (folded arm length) and waist coat. He walks like a very mature person to his grand parents' room and knocks.
"Maan andar aa jaayiye beta," calls Savitri.
"Daadi aap aur Dadu jaa rahe ho. I'll miss you."
"Arre aap bhi toh kuch dino main wahi aa rahe hai."
"Hmmm."
Dadi scans him top to bottom with tear filled happy eyes.
"Dadima, why are you looking at me like that?"
"You look just like your Daadu when he was your age...mature, self made, independent...bus ek buri aadat hai."
Maan was curious to know.
"Dadi...buri aadat?"
" Apka gussa," and she pulls his nose, "humesha naak par chada rehta hai."
"Daaadiii" he complained looking at her in anger.
"Dekha...apna yeh gussa kam karo. It is very bad. Mujhe darr lagta hai Maan, kahin iss gusse ki wajah se you might lose the person you love the most."
Maan laughs, "Phir toh darne ki koi baat nahi, kyunki the person I love the most is YOU, and aap toh mujhse kabhi naaraz nahi hongi"
Daadi is flattered, but she smiles and pats her grandson's cheek, "Maan aap kitne bhi mature ho jaaye, apke andar ka baccha, apki innocence, humse chup nahi sakti. Kitne buddhu hai aap."
Maan pouts cutely, Main buddhu nahi hoon, main Dadu ki tarah smart hoon, very smart," he retorts.
"Smart toh ho, but ..." Daadi looks worried.
"Kaun smart hai bhai," Purushotam comes in, wiping his hair, from the bathroom.
"Kuch nahi hum toh aise hi Maan se kuch baat kar rahe the. Aap tayyar ho gaye, main Nakul ko bulati hoon."
Dadi asks Nakul to send someone to carry the luggage.
"Dadu main bhi challoon."
"Beta, this is your country, you should know about your roots. London main toh tum humesha rehte ho, kuch din ki hi toh baat hai. Mere success ki story yahin se shuru hui thi, and I want you to ground yourself in the simplicity and love of this place. Success doesn't come from arrogance, it comes from staying grounded and not taking achievements to your head, by understanding others, and most important by respecting others just like you respect yourself."
Suddenly, he was reminded of that girl in the book shop, and thought, "Arre main kyun uske baare main soch raha hoon, kitni badtameez thi, and kaisa silly naam tha GEET."
He wondered how he still managed to remember her name.
"Bas bas bahut baatein ho gayi, now we must leave. Chaliye aap."
Maan hugged his Daadu, touched his feet and took his blessings.
Daadi, Maan's mum, Naina were all like, "Aawww...so cute."
While the men folk smiled.
"Daadi again pulled his cheek, "look after yourself and also everyone else, aap toh humare sabse samajhdaar bete ho."
Maan hugged her, and was feeling proud.
...
Geet completed her chores and went to the market with her friends.
Adi saw her and rushed to her, "Hi you remember me?"
Geet was taken aback by the sudden intrusion, but then composed herself, as she didn't wanted to appear rude.
"Oh Hi...how are you?
"I am g...good. Mujhe laga tum abhi bhi naaraz hogi. This is for you," he extended a flower.
Geet apprehensively took it, "Thank you."
"Toh tum naaraz nahi ho?"
"Nahi," Geet smiled really liking his innocence.
"Woh woh...Maan bhi itna bura nahi hai, jitna tum samajh rahi ho."
She didn't know why but his name brought anger rushing into her veins. She wondered she never got angry or reacted to someone like this, let alone people who teased her as unlucky, and abshagun who killed her mother with her bad luck.
"Adi my friends are waiting for me. Main chalti hoon."
She walks away, Adi screams from behind, "It was nice meeting you again...Bye!"
She could hear him laughing with his friends.
"Kaun tha who? Cute hai."
"Meera, woh toh... I met him at our shop. Chal chalte hain, I am getting late. Pappa aate honge."
"Okay okay chill. Main toh bas pooch rahi thi. New people, kabhi dekha nahi hai yahan."
Geet got a call and she hurried.
"Pappa ka hai. Mujhe shop main jaana hoga," she ran...and...
"T-H-U-D!!!"
She didn't remember anything. She first hit her head and shoulder and then those hands went around her, and they fell, she was lying on the floor, and he was on top of her, glaring with his eyes. She screamed, and he scolded her, "Chup bilkul chup."
She felt really embarrassed and strange. She was never close to any boy like this, and that too him. She hated him.
"How dare he?" she thought but never uttered. "Ek tho mujhe gira diya, and then mujhe ghoor raha hai. Idiot."
"Yeh phirse, I hate her," he thought. Her specs fell somewhere and it was the first time he noticed her eyes so close. Strange but he felt they were very attractive and beautiful.
"Ab uthoge bhi ya mujhe invitation dena padega," she said sarcastically.
He got up and dusted himself.
She found her specs and started crying, accusing him.
"Tumne mera specs tod diya."
"Maine? How dare you accuse me? Ek toh dekh kar nahi chal sakti, aur mujhe hi suna rahi ho. Uss din toh mujhe bahut lecture de rahi thi, ab kya hua? Apne yeh aansoo ka drama mat shuru kar dena sympathy ke liye. I don't have time for this nonsense." He pushes her aside in anger and walks away.
"Akdoo, Dusht Danav."
He heard her and turned...
"Kya kaha tumne?"
She hesitated a bit but then thought why should she be afraid of this arrogant brat.
"Wahi joh badshah salamat ne suna," she mocked.
Maan now lost his temper completely, " Accha...to yeh lo..."
He pulled her and twisted her arm, "ab mazza aa raha hai...Told you don't mess with me."
"Aaa...aaa...mujhe dard ho raha hai. Chodo mera hath," her eyes brim up.
"Ladki ho toh ladkiyon ki tarah raho...samjhi..." he pushes her and smirks.
She holds her hand in pain, walks to him, and
"S_L_A_P!!"
Maan was stunned with his face turned to one side with the force of the slap.
Adi and others gathered around and gasped in horror. Geet glared at him in anger.
"Oh no! Adi gasped fearing Maan's response.
