Chapter 3 - The Training

Ragini was in and out of consciousness for the next two days. However she was recovering. The healer said that sleep was good for her; it would help her cure faster. Swara roamed around the area. She didn't try or even think of any escape plan. From her last 2 attempts, she knew it was futile. It was the 5th day since they had been here. Swara was sitting near the stream, with her feet dipped in the cool water watching the sunset. She hoped the King and Queen were searching for them, for Ragini.

"Formulating another escape plan?" came a voice from behind.

Swara turned around, startled. It was Sanskar.

"Oh, you," Swara spoke in a bored tone, "You don't have to keep an eye on me personally. I am not leaving Ragini and running. Why are you still here? Don't you have an evil prince to punish?"

Sanskar chuckled, "I can take out a few minutes."

"For what?" Swara raised an eyebrow and stood up.

"I could teach you how to fight with a sword," he replied.

"Teach me?" she scoffed, "I have already been trained in the palace by people with actual expertise."

"I saw how well you've been trained' the first night," he grinned.

"That was different," she protested, "Give me a sword now and I'll show you."

Sanskar immediately handed her another sword.

"You're serious?" she asked half surprised, "I could injure you."

"You can't," Sanskar replied nonchalantly, "I know how princesses are trained in the palace - once a week, just for formality."

It was true, Swara thought to herself. They had sword training and archery once a week. Ragini was not at all interested in any form of violence- she hated weapons. They would make an excuse and skip the classes most of the time. Ragini was more interested in music and Swara followed her wherever she went. She wanted to learn to use a weapon - just like her father, but since Ragini was not interested, Swara never pursued it.

"So," Sanksar's asked, "Let's begin. The sword that you are holding is a thin thrusting sword. It's easy to train with."

"Why are you doing this?" Swara asked in confusion.

"Because, I liked the way you tried to defend yourself. You have the mental strength. If you learn the skills, you can be one hell of a fighter," he answered and took a step closer to her.

"I don't trust you," Swara retaliated but she thought knowing how to use a weapon would always come in handy especially when she is in the Princess's service, "But I want to learn."

"The first step is to relax," Sanskar began instructing, "You need speed, control and mental clarity. You can't focus if you are in a frazzled state of mind. Stand with your feet apart. Your sole should be flat on the ground. It'll give you more weight when you swing. Also, since you're carrying the sword in the right hand, keep your right foot a little forward."

"I know all this," Swara countered.

He nodded, "Okay then, I'll strike and you block."

Sanskar raised his sword and brought it down meeting Swara's sword halfway. The metal clanged and Swara felt the weight of his attack. Her arm trembled. She was not expecting this ferocity.

"Are you fine?" he asked, looking at her with what Swara imagined to be concern.

She nodded, "Just a little taken aback. In the palace the trainer never used so much force."

"In the palace they treat you with kid gloves, but in the real world your opponent wont," he paused, "We can stop this if you're not up for it."

"No," she shook her head, "Strike again."

He obliged. They continued it till it began to grow dark. Sanskar was speaking instructions as he took swings at her. Swara could understand some of it. The rest he would demonstrate. She felt exhilarated by the end. She had learnt more in these couple hours than she had in the palace.

"That was a good session," Sanskar kept both the swords in the scabbard. He sat down near the stream and washed his face, "you're a good learner."

"I know," she chirped happily, "Within a week's time I could take you down."

"That's over confidence," he splashed water on his face.

"Maybe, I could teach you a thing or two," Swara replied jovially.

Sanskar chuckled, "I would be very interested to see that."

He began to get up, but staggered a little. The next moment, he was slipping and falling in the stream and he simultaneously grabbed Swara's arm for support. Before Swara could realize what was happening, she felt Sankar's pull and her body collided with the water.

It was the shallow end of the stream and the water was only till the waist. Swara gasped as she tried to balance. She wiped the water off her face.

"You!" she accused Sanskar, who was standing right next to her, waist deep in the water, "You did this on purpose."

"What?" he gave her an incredulous look, "I was falling and just as a reflex, grabbed your hand for support."

"Why would you think I'd be able to support you? I am much smaller than you," she argued.

Sanskar rolled his eyes, "Sorry princess, I was not thinking about physics when I fell. It was reflex."

"Don't try to be smart," she retorted, "I know you enjoy doing this, deep down."

"You princesses are a crazy bunch of people," he commented.

She tried to climb out of the stream. The area was muddy and her shoes kept sinking more and more in the mud.

"Let me help you," he said, putting his hands around her waist, trying to give her a push.

"Get your hands off me," she sneered.

"Just trying to help," he replied.

"I don't need-," Swara began to speak when he placed a finger on her lips and shushed her.

"You talk a lot," he said, his eyes on her eyes and his finger lightly placed on her wet lip. Swara realized he was standing close to her. She could feel his warm breath on her face. Slowly, he moved his finger and tucked a stand of wet hair behind her ear. She could feel her heart pounding a little faster than usual.

She stood still, not moving at all. Why didn't she move back? She could easily take a step back, but she didn't.

He took a step toward her and closed the distance between them. Her body was touching his now. His eyes were fixed on her face. She gulped nervously. He placed his hands around her waist and gave her a lift. She grabbed his shoulder for support as he placed her on the bank. He then hoisted himself up from the stream.

Swara immediately got up and without waiting, ran toward the camp.

---------

"What happened to you?" Ragini asked as Swara entered the tent. She was wet. Water was dripping from her clothes and hair.

"Nothing," she lied, "How are you feeling now?"

"Much better," Ragini replied, "these people here have taken good care of me."

Swara started changing her clothes, "Especially Lakshya."

"Lakshya?" Ragini inquired.

Swara nodded, "He was the one who saved you. You'd have drowned else. He's been coming here every day since the past 3 days asking about you. "

"Why didn't you tell me before?" Ragini asked.

"I told you. But you were falling in and out of unconsciousness, so maybe you don't remember," Swara reasoned.

"I should thank him," Ragini replied and started getting up.

"Careful princess," Swara cautioned as she held Ragini's arm, "you haven't recovered fully. You should rest."

"I have been resting for the past 3 days. I am bored. A little walk will do me good." Ragini started walking out of the tent.

"I'll join you in a little while," Swara said drying her hair with a cloth.

---------

Ragini found Lakshya tending to the horses. She walked up to him and cleared her throat. He turned around to face her.

"You're up!" he exclaimed happily.

She spoke, "Swara said you visited me every day."

"I just wanted to make sure that you're recovering quickly," he replied.

"I wanted to thank you for saving me," she answered.

He nodded with a smile. "No need to."

"Of course I need to," she interjected, "You saved my life, so thank you."

He crossed his arms over his chest, "Just a simple thank you for saving your life?" he grinned.

She bit her lip. She knew he was teasing her. She took a step closer to him and his smirk faded. She placed a soft kiss on his cheek and whispered, "Thank you."

She took a step back and started walking away when Lakshya caught her wrist and pulled her towards himself. His right hand was gripping her wrist and he slid his other hand around her waist. Ragini's breathing slowed and her heartbeats quickened. Her body was pressed against him.

"I like your way of thanking," he whispered and she blushed.

The silence was broken by a voice, "What's happening here?"

Lakshya immediately let go of Ragini and they turned to face Swara.

"Nothing," Ragini muttered and left.

Swara glanced at Lakshya, "You saved her life, so I am grateful to you but don't try to cross your limits."

Lakshya furrowed his eyebrows,"My limits?"

"I know what you are doing," she countered, "And I don't want it to happen again."

Lakshya smirked, "You maybe a princess but you can't control everyone's life. She is not your puppet."

"Listen," Swara raised a finger at him, "I don't care what you think of me, but you'll maintain your distance from her."

"Else what?" Lakshya dared her.

Else what? Swara thought to herself. What could she threaten him with? For him Ragini was a lady-in-waiting. He didn't see any problem in pursuing her. But she was a princess and royalty could never mingle with commoners. Pursuing any such relationship would only mean heartbreak for both especially Ragini. Ragini was a very gentle person. Swara didn't want to see her hurt in any form.

"Else the consequences will not be good," Swara asserted and left.
