The credit has to be shared between the actual Neerja and Sonam who portrayed her.
A successful biopic or movie really requires two elements: A compelling storyline and a cast & crew who can bring that story to life.

The real life Neerja gave us a great story. Despite having performed unbelievable feats of bravery, she was a very average girl. She gave a story that inspires, tugs at the heartstrings and is really relatable. But her story is just one half of the mixture.

Biopics and adaptations have been ruined due to shoddy acting and direction. Some fantastic compelling characters in real life or print just fizzled out on screen because people could not do it justice. A lot of people worried that Sonam has a very limited emotional range and would ruin Neerja's amazing story. Sonam however surprised all her critics with her performance in Neerja. She brought Neerja to life and conveyed the whole range of emotions. She made Neerja real and relatable on screen.

While the real life Neerja does require tons of appreciation, it is unfair to say Sonam does not deserve any credit. That is just wrong.

The film worked because the casting was perfect. Sonam may not be a great actress but for this role she was perfect. She looked her part.. This role was in her comfort zone. Including Sonam very person involved with this movie was sincere in their work. Of course the real Neerja and her story was important in its success.. But the efforts of the crew and cast involved in its making cannot be belittled.

Yes to some extent, since Neerja story got more media attention and people were aware about her. On Mary Kom, she achieved a lot for country but unfortunately our media does not cover sports except cricket and other sports are not popular amongst masses. Hence the luke warm response to the movie, besides I would also say the packaging has to be appealing. Neerja was perhaps well made and sold.
On Sonam, I dont find her a competent actress as yet.

Sonam, do you give Ram credit for the performance?
Sonam: For sure. In fact, the directors have to be given credit for my performances in all my films.
Ram: A director can only push the actor, but it's the actor who has to deliver.
Sonam: With all my directors, I have learnt something. With Ram, there's a certain kind of tonality in the visuals and treatment.

Neerja is a much better film than Mary Kom. There is no two ways about it. Neerja is doing better because the film is well made. Real lives are really very boring...even the most bravest stories are meh if you try to tell it like it is...if you have to make it interesting you have to be creative. That's what filmmakers do! If Mary Kom was told in a more interesting way it could have worked better considering PC is a much bigger star and can pull crowds!
