CHAPTER 5. MUJHE HAQ HAI!
"Chhana Chhanak
Teri Bodi Mere Hath
Meri Gut Tere Hath
Je Tu Rakhna Ae Rakh
Je Tu Kadna Ae Kad
Maiyo Tere Naal Vasiyaan Ve Hor Koi Vase Vi Na
Maiyo Tere Naal Katiyaan Ve Hor Koi Kate Vi Na..."
The ladies sang as Daadima put the red duppatta on Geet's head. It was evening after Panditji visited and right now roka ceremony was happening in the courtyard of the Handas. Many neighboring ladies, who loved Geet for impish nature, joined hands to sing during the function. Some brought dholak to play, some even got a mike from some place, all in all, the roka function was lively and filled with joy.
"Ambarsare De Papad De Main Khandi Na
Ambarsare De Papad De Main Khandi Na
Chhana Chhanak
Teri Bodi Mere Hath
Meri Gut Tere Hath..."
The singing continued as Daadima followed the rituals. Maan sat beside Geet and watched his future bride get turned into his fianc. The only regret he had over the whole hasty marriage was that he could not procure rings for both of them. Next day morning he would leave for Dilli to start the wedding preparations and he wished he had a ring on his hand to signify that he had someone waiting for him. He wanted proof of their love adorned on their hands and not having them was a bit of let down for Maan. But he did not let this dampen his mood. After all, he only had 16 hours left before his Geet would be out of his sight and half of it would be spent sleeping. And rest of the half will be spent surrounded by the family. So he stared at her during the whole roka taking in every expression of her, every movement of her, the different types of smile of hers. He wanted to take in everything about her in his eyes so that when he would be back in Dilli the moment he closed his eyes he could imagine her perfectly.
Geet felt Maan's eyes on him the whole time and would have loved to turn to the side and wink at him or flirt with him but everyone's eyes was on hers and she did not want to be called besharam right now. Being called shameless by her family in a teasing manner was different and being scolded for being shameless in front of the almost whole village was a different matter. So Geet kept her urge to look at her Maan in check and kept her eyes bent down during the whole ritual.
It between Daadima turned around to say something to Rano and at that moment everyone's attention went to them. Seeing no one noticing them, Geet slowly looked sideways only to feel her heart race at the look Maan was giving her. It was intense, loving and fierce all together. She could not believe that in just two days they had gotten so close to each other. She closed her eyes and prayed then and there to Babaji that her married life would have no problems and Maan and she could have a happily ever after.
A hand grasped Geet's hand and she opened her eyes. Maan smiled at her and she smiled back. The moment was broken right away though as Daadima came back to finish the ritual and they hastily pulled their hands away from each other.
Soon the ritual was done and the guests dispersed. Then it was usual dinner and usual bed time. Maan sighed in annoyance as he tossed and turned. He was unable to sleep. The thoughts of not seeing his Geet for next few days were troubling him. He knew he was being irrational. It was only five days before he would be back to marry her but his heart yearned to be with her, spend more time getting to know her better and now they were being separated for the next five days. Maan shook his head; he was being dramatic and emotional over simple five days separation but the fact was he fell for Geet and did not want to be separated from her.
Geet! Maan sighed at her thought. He never thought he would fall so fast for someone but the moment he met Geet he was a goner. She was unique in her own way and manage to worm into his heart before he even realised it. He had to get her mobile number Maan determined, atleast hearing her cheerful voice on the phone might ease the pain for next few days.
With another sigh, Maan tossed again. Damn this sleeplessness! He thought as he sat up. He looked around for his mobile and laptop but sighed in annoyance. Mobile was getting charged and he had already packed his laptop for the journey. Now what to do? He had to pass the time some way, right? Then it struck him, I could watch TV!
Maan scrambled out of the bed and walked to the main hall. No one seemed to be around as all had retired to bed earlier. Lagta hai main hi bhoot ki tarah bhatak raha hoon, Maan huffed. There was only one TV in the house and that was in the main hall. He switched on the TV and sat on the sofa facing it. After browsing around for a while, he settled at some channel where some movie was going on. If I am not going to sleep, might as well watch some movie. When was the last time I watched a movie? Maan wondered. Then he chuckled as he remembered watching Hum Aapke Hain Koun! with his Daadima. My God! Daadima kitna royi thi! Maan shook his head. That was the movie that put him off from watching any movie with Daadima! She always chose drama and crying filled movies. He wondered what type of movies Geet would like. May be he could take her to theatres after marriage and watch some movie with her.
In the movie, the boy entered some house with his family and Maan frowned. What is happening here? Then the girl was getting dressed up by her little sister and brought down while some song played in the background. Oh! Ladki dekhne waala program chaalu hai! Maan realised. Then he started chuckling as he remembered his ladki dekhne waale program with Geet. She had winked at him! Oh yes! That was one day he would never forget in his whole life! First being doused with water and atta and then meeting the girl in nothing but towel and then meeting her formally and then getting to eat pasta made by her and finally getting to kiss her. Yes! That was one perfect day! He had expected a girl like the one showing in the movie, shy, blushing but the one he got was way better.
The time passed as he watched the movie. Many songs played in between and soon it was time for the family to go some small town for picnic. Maan watched as the boy, his would-be, his brother and sister-in-law all went to some picnic where the brother and sister-in-law played around in the water while the couple imagined themselves doing that someday themselves. Maan huffed. Inko saath mein time bitaane ko toh mila! Mujhe toh woh bhi nahi mila! Koi baat nahi! Shaadi ke baat bahut aise chances milenge Maan bete! He nodded his head as he continued to watch.
As the movie continued he started feeling sleepy. He watched with bleary eyes as the couple met at the terrace. How romantic! Maan mused as his mind went to his and Geet's meeting on the terrace and her teasing him. He smiled and watched drowsily as some song started playing.
Mujhe Haq Hai
Maan yawned and continued to watch as the girl and the boy romanced late night on some terrace.
Tujhko Jee Bharke Mein Dekhun
Mujhe Haq Hai
Bas Yunhi Dekta Jaaun
Mujhe Haq Hai
Maan's sleepy brain wondered why such song did not play when he and Geet met on the terrace!
Piyaaa...
Piyaaa...
Piya Piya
Bole Mera Jiya...
Maan's eyes drooped but he shook his head and forced his eyes to remain open.
Tumhein Haq Hai
Tumhein Haq Hai
Tumhein Haq Hai
Maan's eyes drooped again and he once again opened them and was shocked when he realised that he was at the door of the Handa Haveli's terrace. What was he doing here? Wasn't he inside the house few minutes back? He sensed someone on the terrace and walked in. There was a girl dressed in pink standing there. She turned around and his heart bloomed. It was Geet! He walked towards her and she looked at him with her usual playful smile.
Dhal Rahi Pighal Rahi
Yeh Raat Dheere Dheere
He lifted her up in his arms and started walking to the swing nearby.
Badh Rahi Hai Pyaar Ki
Baat Dheere Dheere
He placed her on the swing and stared into her eyes.
Choodiyaan Gungunaake Kya Kahein Sajna
Yeh Choodiyaan Gungunaake Kya Kahein Sajna
His hands grabbed hers and the bangles adorning her hands jingled.
Raat Ki Raat Jagaaun
Mujhe Haq Hai
He kissed her hands the way he did the night before and she blushed.
Chaand Poonam Ka Churaaun
Mujhe Haq Hai
He sat beside her and placed a kiss on her forehead tenderly
Piyaaa...
She cupped his face with both her hands when he pulled away.
Piyaaa...
She pulled his face close.
Piya Piya
Bole Mera Jiya...
She placed a kiss on his forehead the same way he did making him smile.
Tumhein Haq Hai
Tumhein Haq Hai
Tumhein Haq Hai
"Tussi kal mennu chadke jaaoge?", Geet asked softly.
Maan nodded feeling sad.
"Jaake mujhe bhool toh nahi jaaoge?", Geet wondered.
And Maan shook his head, "Mar jaaunga tumhein bhoolne se pehle Geet! Mar jaaunga!"
Saying this, he pulled her close and hugged her, the pain of separation already hurting him.
Kal Subaah Tujhse Mein
Door Chala Jaaunga
Ek Pal Ko Bhi Tujhe
Bhool Nahi Paaunga
Yeh Chehra Yeh Muskaan
Aanhkon Mein Bharke
He pulled away and looked at her face carefully trying to memorise them.
Yeh Chehra Yeh Muskaan
Aanhkon Mein Bharke
Main Teri Yaad Mein Tadpun
Mujhe Haq Hai
Tujhse Milne Ko Main Tarsun
Mujhe Haq Hai
Her eyes shone with unshed tears as he pulled away and getting up from the swing he tried to walk away.
Piyaaa...
She grabbed his hand.
Piyaaa...
He turned around.
Piya Piya
Bole Mera Jiya...
She stood up and hugged him tightly.
Tumhein Haq Hai
Tumhein Haq Hai
Tumhein Haq Hai
Maan did not know how long he stood there hugging her but suddenly he heard a movement behind him. He pulled away from Geet and turned around. His eyes widened. He turned back to Geet wanting to know if she saw what he saw too. But Geet had vanished. Where did she go? With fear making his heart beat faster, he turned back and there stood Geet dressed in white from head to toe.
"Geet?", he whispered as he took a step ahead but the girl in front of him did not notice. She was looking somewhere else. Around him, fog filled everywhere. He could not see the terrace or the swing, only Geet dressed in white. "Geet!", he called again but the girl took no notice of him as she walked by him. He watched her walk away with shock.
Just before Maan opened his mouth to call her again, the girl started to sing.
Naina Barse
Rimjhim Rimjhim
Piya Tore Aavan Ki Aas...
Maan watched with wide eyes as the girl walked off still singing. Soon she vanished in the fog and her voice also diminished.
Maan sat up with a jerk. His forehead was dotted with sweat, his heart was thudding in his chest and his eyes were wide as he looked around him. Gone was the fog, the terrace, the swing, he was back at the Handa main hall sitting in front of the TV where the leads were now missing each other. Maan sighed in relief. It was a dream! The whole thing was a dream! He closed his eyes as he let his head fall back. Suddenly he frowned. Why was the room suddenly so cold? He opened his eyes and looked at the clock. It was only 11 at night. He must have slept for barely 5 minutes then why he was suddenly feeling cold. He looked around again being careful this time and he stood up in shock when he noticed that the main door was open. Yeh kyun khula hai? And who opened it? He ran to the door and looked outside. But there was no one there! He even walked outside and looked around a little but no one was around. No Brij, Mummyji, Pappaji, Darji, Daadima or Geet! What was happening here? He shook his head. Someone must have forgotten to close the main door tonight. What else can be the explanation? Then his brain reminded him of the dream he had few minutes ago. He froze as he remembered that. But then he slapped his forehead. Obviously, Preet and the ghost thing that Lodge owner told him affected him more than he thought at first. It must have been in the back of his head and the stress of leaving Geet so soon, must have brought it to front and into his dreams.
Maan shook his head as he closed the door. Better hit the bed, before another song induces another ghostly vision. He shut the TV off and walked off to sleep in his room putting the puzzle of opened door out of his mind.
Next day morning saw the Khuranas all packed up and ready to leave. Daadima smiled as she blessed Rano and her husband as they took her aashirwaad. Brij followed and nearby Maan was being hugged by Daarji. Maan looked around in confusion. Geet was nowhere to be seen. Where was she? Did she not want to say goodbye to him? He would not see her for five days! Didn't she think he would want to see her once before going? His neck craned as he looked all around hoping to see Geet somewhere but there was no glimpse of her. With a sad sigh, he looked down. Kya tum mujhe miss nahi karogi Geet?
As Maan wondered where Geet was, it seemed Daarji had the same thought. He asked his bahu, "Rano Puttar! Geet kitthe hai? Usko Daadima se aashirwwad nai lena?" Before Rano could reply, Daadima spoke up, "Bhai saab! Woh toh subah subah hi humse aashirwaad le chuki hai! Kehti hai ki humein jaate hue dekh nahi paayegi! Isliye subah hi alvida keh gayi!"
Everyone accepted their explanations but Maan was not happy. Daadima ko subah subah goodbye bol diya! Lekin mera kya? Tumne mere baare mein ek baar bhi nahi socha! Dekhlena Geet! Main bhi yeh paanch din tumse baat nahi karunga, tumhein phone nahi karunga!
As Daadima and Rano talked about the wedding preparations and Maan stood in corner looking morose and annoyed, Brij sidled upto him and whispered to him, "Jijaji! Chhat pe koi aapka intezaar kar raha hai!" Maan's eyes widened and he looked at Brij. Brij nodded, "Khisak jaao! Koi bhi aapko dekh nahi raha!" Maan nodded and sneaked off to the terrace.
Maan reached the terrace and noticed Geet standing near the ledge looking away from him with her back towards him.
"Geet!", Maan called out as he walked towards her. She did not respond but her shoulders shook. Maan smiled. She must be laughing over something. But his smile vanished when Geet turned and there were tears flowing down her cheeks.
"Geet!", Maan spoke in alarm. Geet ran to him and hugged him tightly. She continued to sob on his shoulders and Maan hugged her back. "Geet? Tum theek ho?", Maan questioned in worry. Geet pulled away, her tears having lessened. She sniffed and wiped her eyes but tears continued to flow. Maan was beyond distressed at seeing her cry.
Maan cupped Geet's face with both hands and looked into her eyes reassuringly, "Kya hua Geet?"
Geet's face crumpled as she mumbled out, "Tussi mennu chad ke jaa rahe ho!" She broke down crying again as Maan blinked in surprise. That's it? For this she was crying. Maan shook his head. He was a fool to think she would not miss him. It seems she would miss him more than he thought. He slowly pressed a kiss to her head and allowed her to snuggle into him. They remained like that for a while and then once Geet managed to compose herself she pulled away, still sniffing. Her head was down as if she was embarrassed by her crying display, "I am sorry!", she blurted. Maan frowned and Geet explained, "Aap bhi soch rahe honge ki kaisi jhalli se shaadi ho rahi hai aapki! Jo aise bachchon ki tarah ro rahi hai!"
Maan cupped Geet's face again and made her look at him, "I will miss you too!" Maan's that one sentence was enough for Geet to start crying again. Maan shook his head smiling as he hugged her trying to console her. It seemed behind the Sherni there lived a girl with sweet and tender heart.
It took a while but Geet's river of tears finally stopped and she pulled away, wiping her face with her Dupatta. "Tum jaanti ho na, ki kuch dino mein humaari shaadi hai?", Maan asked and Geet nodded. She looked at him with confusion, what was he hinting about? Maan smiled, "Bas paanch din aur Geet! Bas! Phir tum aur main kabhi alag nahi honge!" Geet smiled at his words. He raised his hand and let his fingers graze her cheeks, "Toh phir abse countdown shuru karo! Theek paanch din mein main aa raha hun, tumhein apne saath hamesha hamesha ke liye le jaane!" He moved ahead and placed a kiss on her forehead. She hugged him once more.
Suddenly, they heard a throat clearing and both jumped apart like someone shocked them. They turned to look at the door where a grinning Brij looked at them, "Jijaji! Ghar jaake baaraat laana hai ya idhar hi rehkar, paanch din baad bina dulhe waale baaraat ka swaagat karna hai? Chaliye chaliye! Daadima baahar aapka intezaar kar rahi hain!"
"Kahaan the aap Maan bete?", Daadima asked as Maan stepped out of the house. The elder Handas were standing by Daadima looking curious too. Only Brij looked amused. Maan shrugged, "Woh ... Kamra check kar raha tha! Kahin kuch choota toh nahi?" Everyone accepted his explanation but Daadima leaned over and whispered in his ear, "Choot toh gaya hai Maan bete!" Maan frowned and looked at Daadima. Daadima spoke, "Aapka dil, dimaag, chain aur humaari honewaali bahu Geet! Sab choot gaye hain! Haina?" Realising that his Daadima was teasing, "Daadima!", Maan growled. Daadima chuckled and soon Daadima entered the car in which she came to Hoshiarpur. Maan would be following her in his Jeep.
As Maan started his Jeep, he looked up and his heart bloomed. There on the terrace stood Geet, waving her hand at him. Her eyes were tearing up again but a smile lingered on her lips. Maan smiled and drove off. He had to get to Dilli as soon as possible. Then only he could everything ready on time and be back to take his Geet with him!
Summary:
Hi folks!
Did you like the update?
Did you like the song sequence?
About the song at the start, I wanted an authentic Punjabi folk song to signify a traditional ceremony as during such ceremonies ladies tend to gather and sing old folk songs or bhajans depending on which region you belong to especially in villages where traditions are given upmost importance.
I heard the song ages ago as a kid in Divya Dutta's music video and I never got the whole song but the lines used in start of this update remained in my head for years. Recently, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the same lines used in a Pakistani Show Aunn Zara's Title Track so googled those words. Turns out it's a piece of Punjabi folk song sung mostly in Sangeet, called Amritsar De Papad. I thought it suited roka too so used it here! Turns out Amritsar is referred as Ambarsare in the song. Suddenly, the song Ambarsariya from Fukrey takes on a total new meaning for me!
The third song used in the update is Mujhe Haq Hai which is from Vivaah (2006), sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Udit Narayan and picturised on Amrita Rao and Shahid Kapoor.
Next update is on 31st January, a day when Maan will marry Geet and make her his wife. Hope you are ready for a Maaneet wedding!
Thank you, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
