Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman (21 February 1946 - 14 January 2016) was an English actor. Rickman was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company performing in both modern and classical theatre productions. His big break was his role as the Vicomte de Valmont in the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1985, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. Rickman gained wider notice for his film performances as Hans Gruber in Die Hard andSeverus Snape in the Harry Potter film series.

Rickman's other film roles included the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply, Colonel Brandon in Ang Lee's 1995 film Sense and Sensibility, Harry in Love Actually, and P. L. O'Hara in An Awfully Big Adventure. More recently, he played Judge Turpin in the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 1995, he was awarded the Golden Globe, Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of Rasputin inRasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.

Rickman won a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award and aScreen Actors Guild Award. He died on 14 January 2016, in London, at the age of 69.

Sad demise of Professor Snape leaves Harry Potter fans shocked!

Alan Rickman aka Professor Severus Snape succumbs to cancer at the age of 69. Passes away in London.



The much loved British actor Alan Rickman has died aged 69 after suffering from cancer.

Rickman, widely known for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise, passed away in London surrounded by his family.

His family said in a statement: "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends." [sic]

Rickman was born in Acton, west London. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career on stage after graduating, including on productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He also had memorable roles in films such as Love Actually andRobin Hood: Prince of Thieves., with his breakout role arriving in the form of the scheming Vicomte de Valmont in an acclaimed 1985 RSC production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses."

Stephen Fry lead tributes to Rickman on Twitter. "What desperately sad news about Alan Rickman," he wrote. "A man of such talent, wicked charm and stunning screen and stage presence. He'll be sorely missed."

Harry Potter actor James Phelps, who played Fred Weasley, said Rickman was "One of the nicest actors I've ever met. Thoughts and prayers with his family at this time."

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn praised Rickman as "one of the greatest actors of his generation". "My thoughts are with his family and friends," he wrote on Twitter.

We surely will miss his Potions lessons. May his soul rest in peace.

Though Alan Rickman left us, Professor Severus Snape will 'always' remain with us.
