"Abhi, this is a great idea!" Tanu chirped beside him.
"Of course it is, I came up with it," Abhi arrogantly replied, barely paying his fiancee any attention.
"This will definitely woo her. And you don't even have to get close to her to do it!" Tanu smirked. That vixen had no idea what was coming. She was going to fall head over heels, only to have her heart broken, and Abhi would get his property back. It was the perfect win-win.
"Yep, now hide before she sees you." Abhi roughly shoved her behind him, and she glared as she stumbled to the armchair next to railing overlooking the house between the stairs.
"Might I remind you I'm pregnant!" she growled under her breath.
Abhi, meanwhile, took his position front and center, leaning over the railing. Purab had called to say he was coming over with Bulbul, and they had picked up Pragya on the way. Why they would willingly help her, though, was beyond Abhi. He figured she had forced them, just like she had done with everyone else when it came to getting what she wanted.
As footsteps sounded in the halls, he smirked. Perfect. She should be coming in 3...2...1...
He tipped over the plate in his hands, and let the rose petals fall over, showering the girl underneath them.
"Oh my god! Raj!" a delighted voice called out.
Crap.
"Mithali bhabi?" He called out. Behind him, Tanu face palmed.
He hesitantly leaned over. Sure enough, underneath him, was his cousin's wife. Her overjoyed face morphed into confusion as she looked up to see him.
"Abhi?!"
He groaned. He grabbed Tanu's hand before running down the stairs.
"Stop pulling me! I. Am. Pregnant. With your child!" she yelped.
"Fine, fine!" he said, even though he obviously was not listening.
He ran up to Mithali, who was still standing there, looking as confused as ever, and slightly fearful as he approached.
"Bhabi, I have no time to explain," he said. "Just help me pick up all these petals up as fast as possible."
"What are you doing? Isn't this a romantic gesture? Who is this for?" she said, her curiosity overwhelming her.
"Bhabi! Just hurry up and do what you're told!" Tanu huffed from the side.
"I don't see you helping pick up the petals," Mithali replied in like.
"I'm pregnant, you fool!" Tanu shrieked.
"Where?" Mithali replied, just as hotly. "No one could tell with those dresses and high heels. And you've been pregnant for how long now? Why aren't you showing?"
"This isn't about me!" Tanu exclaimed.
"No, actually, she's got a point," Abhi stopped picking up petals and looked back at Tanu. "Why are you not showing yet?"
Before anything more could be said, though, there was the unmistakable sound of a car pulling up.
"Shit!" Abhi exclaimed. He turned to Mithali, practically begging. "Bhabi, please go anywhere but here!"
"Fine, fine, I'm going!" she said, walking away.
"Tanu, you go, too!" Abhi pushed her into the alcove underneath the stairs, while he ran upstairs, dropping petals along the way. He took a moment to breathe as the sound of footsteps bounced off the walls. This time, it had to be her.
3...2...1...
He pushed over what remained of the rose petals.
"What?!"
"Hey, what the-?"
"A-a-a-ACHOOO!"
Shit.
He peeked over, only to see Purab, Bulbul, and Daadi. And Purab was sneezing. A lot.
"Abhi, what is the meaning of this?!" Granny said, shouting to her grandson. She did not look happy. Grabbing Bulbul and a still-sneezing Purab, she dragged them up the stairs at a speed that should have been impossible for her age.
Abhi furtively glanced this way and that. There was no escape for him now. He should probably just bang his head on the railing to knock himself out. But it was too late. Daadi was there. And she was ready to give him a smackdown.
"Do you want to explain why you poured rose petals on us even though you know Purab is allergic to them?" Daadi said. With Bulbul and a red-eyed Purab flanking her on both sides, she looked just as intimidating as he did with his own bodyguards.
Abhi blinked. Daadi couldn't know about his plan to woo Mogambo. But he couldn't just lie to his beloved grandmother either. He gulped. Something had to give.
"Well you see, I wanted to do this for Lady Mogambo," he started slowly. At Daadi's shocked look, he hurried to explain, rushing through the remainder of what had to say, getting more and more frustrated as he went along with wilder gestures. "I thought maybe I could get her in a good mood, and then she'd give me the money I need to buy you a gift for your birthday. But then Mithali bhabi came! And I spilled the petals on her so I had to run downstairs and pick them up but then I heard the car and I thought it was Pragya, so I ran back up and poured them again, but it was you!"
"You're such a dramebaaz, you know that?" Daadi looked like she was ready to take off her shoe and smack him right there, but he could see the twinkle of amusement in her eyes.
"At least I'm pouring petals, not thorns, right?" Abhi said, hoping it would win some points with his grandmother. "That could have ended pretty bad."
When that got no reaction, he laughed uneasily.
"It was Tanu's idea!" He finally said, waving his arm with great flourish to point out his fiancee under the stairs. As he did though, he knocked the metal plate over the rail.
"OW!" a voice yelped from down below.
F**k.
His heart sank to his stomach as he leaned over the railing one last time. Sure enough, Lady Mogambo was sitting on the floor in a daze while holding her head, looking around confused.
"Putra," Daadi deadpanned. "You might as well have poured thorns."
F**k it all.
