Bajirao Mastani Movie Review
18 Dec, 2015 | Divya Solgama

There was a time when our Hindi film directors used to make films with full passion and madness. They used to put their heart and soul in their films without compromising at any given point. Most of these movies used to be magnum opus films like Mughal-E-Azam', Guide', Mera Naam Joker', Ganga Jamuna', Khuda Gawah', Lagaan', Devdas' and more. Few of these films took years and years in its making and some of them extracted the single last penny of its filmmaker. Every such film has its unique tale to narrate related to its making and the mad obsession of the filmmaker. Sadly, in today's time such mad obsession is seen only in few directors out of which Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one such mad genius who loves to present his films in total grand style made with full energy, hard work and high level of passion. For more than one and a half decade, this maverick filmmaker has been planning to make a film based on the epic love saga of the Maratha warrior Bajirao and the love of his life Mastani. Very few know that Sanjay had originally planned this film with Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. Sadly, things did not work out until the success of his last film Ram Leela', after which his lead pair (Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone) agreed to be a part of this dream project of Mr. Bhansali. In the times where films are made as fast as possible, the team of Bajirao Mastani' took almost a year to make it with full involvement of its lead actors. Looking at the promo the movie promises to be a magnum opus film made on a high scale packed with powerful performances by its main protagonists.

Bajirao Mastani' is a story of the Maratha Peshwa - Bajirao (Ranveer Singh), who won plenty of battles for his king Chhattrapati Shahu Maharaj (Mahesh Manjrekar). After fighting one such battle, he is approached by Mastani (Deepika Padukone) to save her father's kingdom. Bajirao helps Mastani and in return loses his heart to her. He returns back to his provinces and his wife Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra). Mastani follows him to Poona where she is rejected by Bajirao's mother (Tanvi Azmi). Mastani does not give up her love nor does Bajirao and what happens next is what the entire film is all about.

The story is inspired from the book Rau' by N.S.Inamdar which portrayed the historical life and happenings of the warrior and his lady love. Though, the writers have taken many cinematic liberties in order to make the movie appealing and engaging. The first half is flawless and has many fantastic moments attached to it. Right from the first scene featuring the selection of Ranveer Singh followed by breath taking credit titles, Ranveer's first meet with Deepika, the whole battle of Bundelkhand, Ranveer meeting Deepika in her chamber, Ranveer firing Aditya Pancholi, Ranveer accepting Deepika's love, Ranveer - Raza Murad war meet, Priyanka Chopra's meet with Deepika followed by her closure with Ranveer Singh and many more, the movie keeps you glued to your seat. The second half though tends to be more of an Ekta Kapoor style of drama, featuring the house politics and stuff related to it. Tanvi Azmi tries hard to give a performance like what Illa Arun did in Jodha Akbar', but fails at some point. The screenplay tends to be repetitive in the second half, followed by weak and non-connective climax. Barring these minor glitches Bajirao Mastani' excels in every aspect of film-making. The dialogues are power punched followed by breathtaking visuals. There are many such moments where you will clap for the lead actors due to their flawless performances.

Music by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is good and goes well with the mood and flow of the film. Mohe Rang Do Laal', Pinga', Deewani Mastani' and Malhari' are a cinematic treat for the film lovers. These songs adds as an additional screenplay and ends as one of the key elements of this film. The diehard passion and efforts of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is highly visible in the movie as he presents a grand film to us, in a grand style and with a grand content. He succeeds in capturing the sizzling chemistry of Ranveer and Deepika followed by high octane dramatic scenes featuring Ranveer, Priyanka and Tanvi Azmi. Every single frame of the film portrays the love of this director for his cinema. Though, there are a few times where he overdoes it to make this movie look epic. Nevertheless, it's a proud moment for people like us to witness the mad obsession of this ace director on the silver screen.

Ranveer Singh as Bajirao is fantastic. His accent, body mannerism, grace on his face, energetic performance takes the movie to another level. Deepika Padukone looks stunningly beautiful and enhances her acting skills. Together, they set the screen on fire with their blazing chemistry. Priyanka Chopra is outstanding in her small role, wished she had more screen length as her scenes in the second half are among the main highlights of the film. Tanvi Azmi does a great job, but her character seemed like replica of Illa Arun from Jodha Akbar'. Milind Gunaji and Vaibbhav Tatwadi lend good support. Mahesh Manjrekar, Aaditya Pancholi, Yatin Karyekar, Benjamin Gilani and Raza Murad are wasted. Narration by Irrfan is welcomed.

On an overall basis, Bajirao Mastani' is a fine piece of classic cinema, which gets mildly diluted, due to its less appealing climax. Nevertheless, the movie is a cinematic experience as there are plenty of good reasons for you to not miss this great film as they don't make these kind of movies anymore.

Bajirao Mastani Movie Review: Ranveer Singh takes his chance, Bhansali doesn't

Movie : Bajirao Mastani

Critics Rating :

Cast : Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra

Director : Sanjay Leela Bhansali

New Delhi : -

Bajirao Mastani, a film which is all about a warrior who fights two battles, one ahead and one behind. The one fought with swords and spears is not a match for the chiselled knight but the other is so deeply embroiled in the realms of religion, love and pride that it sends tremors to the very foundation of an empire.

Epics are hard to come by in Bollywood and it is sad that in a country so rich in its history, inspirations are often taken from foreign plots. Bajirao Mastani is a pleasant portrayal of the Maratha royalty even though it misses the chance of using their culture more creatively. What replaces it is the pomp and glamour of the Bhansali banner which admittedly, has been toned down to suit the plot.

The film has a swift beginning, one in which most characters are established in quick succession. As things conspire, the film soon becomes centred around the titled love story. If metaphors are to be believed then the first scene, one in which Bajirao is asked to split a feather with an arrow; his love for Mastani stands to be that arrow and the feather being the Maratha kingdom.

Pulling off a Marathi accent with the roar of a Peshwa might have been a tall order for most but Ranveer's flair matched the standards needed despite the fact that his erect spine occasionally gave way to a hunched child-like smile. Everybody else, including the Mahesh Manjrekar seem to be working in a sub-plot to cater to his prominence.

The chemistry of Ranveer, Deepika and Priyanka in the film

The chemistry between Ranveer and Deepika is well-known but the standout chemistry has been the Deepika-Priyanka one. The forgiving, compassionate and responsible Priyanka is an avatar we haven't seen before. The two are bound to bring up comparisons from the Devdasduo of Aishwarya and Madhuri and deservedly so.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has mastered the art of creating movies with epic sets and plots, has done justice to his title in this instalment as well. His meticulous style is self-revealing and awe inspiring. The magnificence of his finesse is such that the background music could not match the same.

Even songs which are individually good were losing their grace while running through the plot; blame it on the top class performances or the heavily glorified picturisation that the music took a back seat.

The problem really lies with the climax and a story which was so heavy on romance really doesn't quite reach its vanity despite being stretched in some instances. What Bajirao Mastani really misses is a villain, an antagonist or a rival. In the absence of one, too much is left on Ranveer's shoulders to accomplish. As it stands, Bajirao Mastani would be remembered for what it could have been rather than what it is.

Bajirao Mastani movie review: Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra are the stars in Bhansali's latest ill-fated romance

If Bajirao Mastani disappoints, it is when Bhansali steps out of the carefully controlled interiors and heads out into the battlefield where he is unable to recreate the magic. SS Rajamouli's feat in Baahubali automatically flashes in memory as the fight sequences here never quite wow.

In his two-decade long career as a director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has made it quite apparent that he has a weakness for tales centering on forbidden and failed love. His most recent film, audiences have been told, is one that he has wanted to make for the last 12 years. It is the story of star-crossed lovers - Peshwa Bajirao I (Ranveer Singh) and Mastani (Deepika Padukone), the half-Rajput and half-Muslim beauty from Bundelkhand. You understand why Bhansali never quite gave up on his dream project. It gives him the perfect excuse to stage another tragic love story against a grand, lush backdrop with graceful, bejeweled women, gorgeous costumes and beautifully choreographed songs.

But what sets this doomed romance apart from his last romantic tragedy, Goliyon Kis RaasleelaRamleela, is the presence of another woman in Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra), Peshwa Bajirao I's wife. The film may be called Bajirao Mastani but it is Kashibai who makes a formidable impression in Bhansali's version of the historical tale. She isn't the kinds to forgive her husband's betrayal and thankfully isn't reduced to a bitter, vengeful wife. Credit goes to Chopra who further humanizes the character, making audiences feel Kashibai's loss and anguish. The scenes between Singh and Chopra - first as the happy couple and then estranged - are dramatically the most enriching bits in the film. One misses that in the encounters with Bajirao and Mastani which are passionate and tearful but still lack the potency that should make viewers root for them.

But perhaps that isn't Bhansali's intention. In the first half he pays tribute to Mughal-e-Azam with two songs, "Mohe Rang Do Lal" and "Deewani Mastani". He draws parallel between Radha and Mastani, who was never married to the man with whom she is remembered. He is eager to show Kashibai's plight and Bajirao's struggle to balance between loyalty for the kingdom, responsibility as a ruler and unwavering love for Mastani. It is Mastani who is ill-serviced in Prakash Kapadia's screenplay. Viewers get little sense of the woman other than a Juliet adept in sword fighting. This warrior side all but disappears in the second half and Mastani is the consort who is ostracized by the Marathas and futilely hopes to win the approval of Radhabai (Tanvi Azmi), Bajirao's mother, and Chimaji (Vaibhav Tatwadi), his brother. Bhansali is keen to highlight the religious divide which is the bane of Bajirao and Mastani's romance and he accomplishes it without the melodrama. Sadly excessive theatrics seep into the climax where Bhansali much like Bajirao loses control stretching the film for needless visual splendour.

It is words and not action that speaks louder in Bajirao Mastani which isn't a great strategy as audiences are told that Bajirao hasn't lost his last 40 odd fights. Furthermore the second half loses focus as both the women quickly turn mothers and Bajirao's adolescent son, Nanasaheb, suddenly arrives and decides to take things into his own hands.

Nonetheless, there is a lot to swoon over in Bajirao Mastani. Technically the film is a marvel, even more so if you choose to watch Dilwale right after it. Bhansali's female characters have always looked like they have stepped out of a painting but here even Singh gets to strut about in some wonderful anarkalis. Collaborating with Bhansali for the second time, cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee creates some wonderful imageries, a few of them in the fountain. There is just the right amount of whistle-drawing dialogues to enliven the proceedings. Singh relishes delivering these theatrical lines with a Marathi twang. His body language demonstrates the bravado and hunger of a ruler and his eyes the passion and rage of a lover. He is wholeheartedly committed to the character, often losing himself as evident in the song "Malhari". He is an actor who is eager to appease the audiences and declare that he wants to reign supreme in Bollywood. He arrives and he conquers.

Bollywood Film review: Bajirao Mastani

By Hiten Trivedi

Bajirao Mastani - An extravagant, spectacular period drama!

Star cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Tanvi Azmi, Milind Soman

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Rating: ***1/2

I thought we, as the audience, would either have to wait for Ashutosh Gowariker to make another magnificent period drama like Jodhaa Akbar or for K. Asif to reborn and make another spectacle like Mughal-e-Azam. But thankfully, the wait is over because we now have Bajirao Mastani that matches to its predecessors at almost all levels.

I don't need to delve too much into the story because we all know the film is about the eternal romance between Peshwa Bajirao, the legendary Maratha warrior and his second wife, Mastani. So there is pretty much nothing left for me to write about the story. But what needs to be applauded with a standing ovation though is the way the story has been narrated and executed.

Neither of us have seen or witnessed the era this film belongs to and hence there is little scope for us to decide how much of what has been narrated is true and marinated in facts. And anyways, the filmmakers have made it loud and clear in their disclaimer that this is a work of fiction inspired by a book on the history of Peshwas titled Rao'. It is not an easy task even for a veteran filmmaker to do justice to a period drama because you have to make your audience travel back to the era the film belongs to. Sanjay Leela Bhansali achieves this feat marvelously!! The gorgeous romance between Bajirao and Mastani, the discomforting love between him and his first wife Kashi Bai, the conflicts between Peshwa and his men, the betrayal by Bajirao's mother - all these have been narrated in a fantabulous way!

The breathtaking visuals, the unbelievable detailing, the impeccable scale and canvas, and the spectacular grandeur of the film are to be seen to be believed. Yes, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for roping in all these elements in his earlier films too, but this time, the magician filmmaker takes his vision to another level. The sets of the film look so real that they make you forget for those two-and-a-half hours that you belong to 2015. Right from the first scene itself that marks the entry of Bajirao and is crowned as the new Peshwa after he slits a peacock feather into half with a master stroke of his arrow, you are taken back to the era and you would be compelled to feel that you belong to the Peshwas.

The song and dance sequences, especially the Kathak dance and Deewani Mastani are absolutely magical so much so that you would want them to just go on and on... The scale at which the war sequences have been shot is phenomenal and the visuals are intimidating to say the least. The costumes, the ornaments, the weapons, the war fields are magnificent. Hats off to the detailing that has gone into each and every frame of this film, which is nothing but a painting in motion. The sets are so breathtakingly gorgeous that you wouldn't mind giving your left arm or even kill to be there.

Talking about performances, Priyanka Chopra as the vulnerable, strong-willed, large-hearted, compromising, loving and caring wife Kashi Bai is simply brilliant! She is the best part of the film. You would want to believe that Kashi Bai must have looked and been exactly like Priyanka. The way PeeCee has portrayed the pain, the loneliness, the calmness and the resilience of Kashi Bai is just fantastic! She has nailed it and how! Deepika, as Ranveer said in his interview, looks like a dream and has done a very good job as Mastani who is head over heels in love with the Peshwa and didn't mind living as and being called his keep and going through the trials and tribulations despite being a princess of Bundelkhand herself.

Ranveer Singh as Peshwa Bajirao is very good, but... yes there is a but' when it comes to his performance. In his interview, Ranveer said he had to put on a lot of muscle mass and look strong and intimidating. Yes he does look strong and intimidating but not throughout the film. There are scenes when he completely transforms into Bajirao and makes you forget that you are watching Ranveer Singh. But there are scenes where he loses the touch. Sadly, he is not consistent. While in some scenes, he walks and talks and lives like a Peshwa and a great Maratha warrior; in some scenes, his body language, his walk and mannerisms are as casual as Ricky Bahl. Honestly, he looked stronger and more intimidating and even had a way better and beefed-up physique in Ram-Leela. Unfortunately, the nuances of the real Ranveer Singh do crop up at times. No, don't get me wrong; I am not saying he is bad. I already said he is very good, but the inconsistency in his performance would make you feel as if Bhansali gave him complete freedom to perform each and every scene the way he wanted.

Apart from Ranveer, the second major problem I have (and I am sure most of the viewers would have) is with the climax and its execution. It's just way too melodramatic and unbelievable. How can such a strong-headed, extremely smart and sharp-minded Bajirao lose his sanity before giving up his life for Mastani is beyond me. Where there is unconditional love, there are bound to be conflicts and betrayals and Tanvi Azmi, as Bajirao's mother, fills those areas wonderfully with a fantastic performance. Milind Soman, being a Maharashtrian himself and with those chiseled features, looks every bit a Maratha and someone who belonged to that era. Mahesh Manjrekar as Chhatrapati Sahu Maharaj is good and so is Aditya Pancholi.

There are two films releasing this weekend and they both belong to different spectrums altogether. I will talk about the other film in its review and tell you whether it's worth watching or not. But Bajirao Mastani is an experience which deserves to be watched multiple times. If you don't believe me, be a Santa and go and watch it and give yourself a magnificent treat this Christmas!

Bajirao Mastani Finds A Positive Response | Day 1 Occupancy Update

Dec 18th, 2015 by Koimoi.com Team

A lot was on stake for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Eros, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone andPriyanka Chopra when it came to Bajirao Mastani. After all, this is one of the biggest ever films for them, and especially for Bhansali and Ranveer, this is as gigantic as it gets. Well, they can now heave a sigh of relief as the film has met with a positive response, as far as the morning shows are concerned.

This is a kind of film that grows primarily towards the evening shows and then over the weekend. Still, for the film to find an average occupancy around 50% with many centers doing even better means the stage has been set for it to grow further. Of course, this occupancy had also been made possible due to its divided release, considering competiton with another biggie Dilwale. Still, with the right opening being managed, the film finds itself on a solid footing now and hence 12-14 crore are on the cards for today.

The reviews have been all around positive for the film and for team, this is a tad better than even their last outing Ram Leela. While critical acclaim has come in, audience feedback would be more pronounced by the end of day. That said, the start that the film had gained and the positivity demonstrated so far indicates that Bajirao Mastani is in for a long haul with a three week open run till 7th January.
