Varun Dhawan, shot to fame after debuting in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year opposite Alia Bhatt. Though Varun is just five films old, the actor has come a really long way in a short span. All gen-next stars like Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh have been doing well at the box-office but this year surely belongs to Jr Dhawan. While it has been an average year for Sid since he has had just one release - Brothers with Akshay Kumar. The film made only about Rs 82 crore at the box office. Ranveer has also had an average year, his Dil Dhadakne Do made Rs 80 crore, however with Bajirao Mastani set to release, he may end the year on a good note.
However, the Dilwale actor has already had two releases this year, one experimental thriller Badlapur and one mass entertainer, ABCD 2. Both the films did very well at the domestic as well as international box office. While Badlapur earned about Rs 50 crore nett at the domestic box office, ABCD 2 earned Rs 102 crore. His total tally at the domestic box office is Rs 152 crore. And with a mass entertainer with Dilwale releasing on December 18, his total earning at the box office is only going to show a jump.
The main reason for Varun's success is the choice of films he has made. As exhibitor and distributor, Akshaye Rathi reveals, "If you see Varun Dhawan's career graph, then you will realise that except Badlapur, he has never gone down that let's experiment' path. It may be that he has imbibed the good sensibilities of his father that makes him take up absolutely main stream and commercial films. He also takes up some very entertaining role and all this combined makes an actor a superstar. The whole ploy of playing to the gallery, focusing on one element, which is entertainment rather than critical acclaim, is what Varun has done as a master and that's why he has been successful."
Varun is also a mass entertainer, as Akshaye mentions, "If you look at the individualistic standing in raw popularity of the gen-next stars, then Varun and Ranveer Singh rule the roster. Both of them are mass entertainers, which is a rare scenario of the gen-next stars. Talking about Varun specifically, he is a package of entertainment. The way he dances, he acts and his comic timing has a fine balance between the ability to engage the multiplex audience as well entertain the masses too. He is able to strike that balance, which other gen-next stars are not being able to do."
With more entertaining films like Dishoom and Zoya Akhtar's next in his kitty, Varun is all set for 2016 as well.
