How many autographs have you signed so far?
Quite a lot. I've not really counted. It's really heartwarming, and feels great, that even before the films release I'm getting appreciated. It's a good feeling.
But the fans want to know whether it's the girls or the boys who come to you more!
Right now, I think girls are coming more. Hopefully both will come in the future!!
On the reality show [VOI?], all the girls were over you!
No, no! It's just that I went towards where the girls were.
Oh so you planned
Yep, fully planned
To make the girls crazy about you
I'm trying!
How did this journey start?
Saawariya's journey?
Yep...
I was in a film school in New York... For two years. Then after that I went to an acting school... I learnt acting for a year and then when I came back, I wanted to assist someone. And at that time I was getting a lot of film offers. I was a big fan of SLB, I had seen Devdas and I often used to think that I'm getting offers but why isn't SLB offering me anything.
So you always knew you wanted to work with SLB?
Definitely. I had decided that when I go back I'll work with SLB and assist the film he's making. And I'll make sure that he likes me so that he casts me in his next film!
SLB says, jokingly of course, that you and Sonam trapped him. You came being AD's to actually become actor's!
Well, yeah that's true! The first day I went to meet SLB he said he was a fan of my grandfather and parents. He asked me why I wanted to assist and I said I wanted to learn and get a grounding experience in cinema. And he said but your face has actor written on it, you should become an actor and you have that x-factor. So I got really happy and grateful that he loved me so much on the first day itself. From that day itself he taught me a lot... I've given queues to the actors etc
Have you been at the end of an actor's telling-off?
Yes! I have!
Really?
Really.
Inspite of being Rishi-Neetu's son??
Yeah I was like any other AD on the set...I did what any of the others did. From picking up someones shoes to giving someone a script, we did everything! It's not that I'm so and so's son so I get a good room and better food. Nothing like that. It was a really good experience for me! You can never learn as much as you do from actually experiencing the shoot from a film, not even at an acting school.
How did you parents react when you told them you want to be an actor?
There was no reaction. They were expecting it... we talk, eat, sleep, breathe films! When SLB offered me Saawariya, they were really happy because he must've seen something in me.
So we can safely say you wanted to be an actor from childhood?
I knew I wanted to be in films but I wasn't sure which aspect of filmmaking I wanted to be a part of; production, direction, acting... I wanted to act, be a director, produce films... But I hadn't really decided.
Besides your parents, who were your acting-idols while growing up?
I'm a big fan of Raj Kapoor and his films. I study his films. Actors... I'm very fond of my father Rishi Kapoor, I'm fond of Akshaye Khanna, Hrithik Roshan... all of them... all of them are such fine actors. Recently I saw Gandhi My Father and I thought Akshaye was wonderful! It's the characters they portray that inspire one, it's film to film...
So your more into the films then the actors
Yeah I would say that
Part 2 [Extracts]
Were you given any references for your young, lover boy role in Saawariya?
Yes, many references. We were involved right from the pre-production of the film! We were there through the making of the music and the set designing... I used to go on many drives with SLB and we used to speak a lot about my character.
Random quotes from the interview by Ranbir:
"If my career lasts 10 years say, even then I wont get a film like Saawariya. It's the ideal film... the type I wanted to work in, the type of character I wanted to do."
"I don't think I'm a good dancer. I try very hard, I rehearse a lot. (*Interviewer argues that he's very good and he's being modest*) Well, maybe I've got the genes from my mum and dad, but I really don't believe I'm a good dancer. I have a long way to go!"
"I haven't tried to imitate mum, dad or my grandfather. I have to find my own style."
"My parents didn't come to see me act in the film, because they were nervous I'd goof up and get nervous myself. They came once and had tea and then left straight away! Dad's very nervous to see me onscreen."
"Dad still hasn't seen the rushes of the film"
"When my parents look at me now they look with a lot of pride!"
"At the end of the day you work to make your parents happy, and if they respond to you, it's a very good feeling."
PART 3
You've been childhood friends with Sonam, did it feel weird to act romantically together in a film?
It wasn't weird, 'coz I know her since my childhood and we have a very strong friendship. ["GEHRI DOSTI" :thud: :thud:]...We've been dancing together from bday parties till Saawariya. Sonam's a wonderful person.
But to speak romantic lines to your friend
Sonam's a very pretty girl, a very attractive girl, and I definitely don't mind saying romantic lines to her :naughty: :thud:
A little uncomfortable?
Never! Never...I don't think so. Never!
As an actress, how would you rate Sonam? I'll ask her the same question too...
After her first film I'd say she's a 9/10 :thud:
9/10? That's a very high mark
Absolutely
Tell us much as you can about your character in Saawariya
My characters name is Ranbir Raj, which happens to be my grandfather's real name. It's a very sweet, simple love story. I can't say much 'coz I don't think we're allowed to speak about the film!! But you wont be disappointed [1] coz its an SLB film [2] its a love story..about being in love! It's a wonderful film!
Even before being a star, your first films not released, but you've got rumours about who you're dating!
You see... when such articles came out, it used to effect me and I'd go and ask mum why this is happening. I want people to talk about my work. Even say you don't like me, post watching my film. But don't go into my personal life even before my film is released because then the audience starts to pre-conceive views about you!
Isn't this part & parcel of the job?
I'm still learning. I understand that the media plays a part. I'll just have to get used to it!
I have to ask on behalf of your female fans...Is Ranbir single and ready to mingle?
ABsolutely! I dunno if I'm ready to mingle but I'm absolutely single!
Your films releasing Nov9 with SRK's film OSO... Nervous?? You're clashing with King Khan!
Of course I'm nervous, it's SHAH RUKH KHAN! I've been a big fan of his and Farah's a talented director. And I'm also elated that my film is releasing with Shah Rukh Khan's film!! People get scared and delay their films coz of SRK but I've got SLB too... and I'm thankful to SRK for sharing his release date with me... In fact his first film was with my dad..Deewana!
I wish Shah Rukh all the best and I'll definitely go and see Om Shanti Om! People should see the film, and they should see our film also. See both the films and then decide for the 2nd time which one you want to see :sloppy:
