The Best of Things
Chapter 2

On the balcony off his room, leaning back into cushions lining the deep garden chair, Laskhya Maheshwari rested his head and raised the cigarette to his lips. His wife slumbered on in the room within...

This week had been so mundane and yet, somehow so momentous. A turning point had come a few days ago - but so wrapped up in the daily ebb and flow of things... no one even realised what had happened.

An evening the week after Diwali, dusk had fallen ridiculously early. The men had returned from work, and Lakshya had sneaked up to the terrace, to his smoking cubby-hole to one side of the house where the elders never came. The younger lot all knew that he smoked, but by common consent, it was kept secret. Lakshya had just stubbed out his cigarette when he heard someone sit on the large creaky swing chair on the other side. This was a lovely terrace garden in Maheshwari Mansion, designed with many fronds and flowers, trellises with lush flowering creepers, a couple of bird baths and discreet lights. The elders hardly came upstairs these days, but he looked through the shrubs that concealed him in case it was one of them.

It was Sanskaar who had settled into the swing... a mug of steaming tea stood on the side table next to him. Lakshya pulled a face. They had once been friends, but Lakshya could hardly see his cousin brother these days without pulling his hand into a fist. Bloody Hypocrite! He was now pretending to be a saint and Swara's saviour, and she was falling for it, damn her!

"Sanskaar!" It was Swara's voice. "Where are you?"

Sanskaar raised his head. "Here, Swara, in the terrace garden," he shouted back.

Swara's form stood silhouetted in the lit doorway with something like a tray in her hands. She was dressed in a simple elegant suit of ochre, paired with a lovely silk multi-hued dupatta that trailed slightly as she walked in. "Ah, here you are. You weren't in the room, so I wondered where you'd gotten to."

She moved up to Sanskaar. "I've brought us some pakoras to go with the chai. These cold evenings are perfect for it!"

"Oh, great, and you've brought cookies too!" he replied, making room for the large plate on the table in front, and helping her set down her own mug of tea. She settled on the swing as well. The Maheshwaris ate dinner late, which gave them enough time for a substantial tea after the men came home.

Lakshya gritted his teeth. Having to eavesdrop on their bonhomous chatter grated on his nerves. But in that way in which we can't leave a wound alone, he cocked his head to hear their conversation, which was more muted now. What was that about Banaras?

"Promise?" Swara was asking.

"Of course, I promise. We'll do that - start at Gomukh, bathe at Gangotri and follow the River Ganga to Hardwar, we'll go river rafting in Rishikesh, then come to Prayag and Banaras before looping back to Kolkata. It's a terrific plan!" Sanskaar sounded very excited. "Only, since it's a longer plan, I'll just have to juggle things at work - arrange karne mein thoda time lagega, but it's worth it, Swara!"

He fell silent, thinking. Something minute must've shifted in his face because Swara's voice became more attentive. "Kya hua, Sanskaar? What are you thinking?"

"I was wishing we could ask Lucky and Ragini to go with us too... but haalaat aise hain ke we can't do that!"

Swara sighed. "I know! We could have so much fun together, the four of us, but it's all so messed up. Ragini is so suspicious, she'll see conspiracies in every bush. And Lakshya will never understand how simple and uncomplicated I want it to be - how I can only ever relate to him as a friend, nothing more! And he's got so many misgivings about you too. Rehne do, Sanskaar... I want as little as possible with the two of them as matters are."

Then she brightened up. "Lekin, hum dono bohut masti karenge, I promise. It'll be the trip of a lifetime!"

A wave of sadness had engulfed Lakshya then. Oh, why they did they call him Lucky, when he was the unluckiest chap alive? The girl he had loved so much, the brother he had adored - he had lost these precious friends! Instead, he had on his hands a wife he loathed - a millstone around his neck - a murderess, an unconscionable liar! And one who was obsessed with him... he felt like he was drowning, sometimes... choking in her deadly grasp. How had it come to this?!

The Best of Things
Chapter 3

"You know what, Sanskaar?" Swara's voice rose slightly in indignation, "Laksh is living in some fantasy land. Does he really think he can reset' life - as if he had created a System Restore Point' on our wedding day?! He just wants to turn the clock back, erase everything that happened... can't he see that's not possible?"

"It's his way of trying to make amends, Swara," Sanskaar's voice, reasonable and measured, as always.

Lakshya stood against the parapet on the terrace, concealed by greenery, overhearing his life being discussed. With so much said back and forth, and multiple threads of meaning and misunderstanding in every conversation among them, it had been so confusing. He stood very quiet, trying to understand at least this way what Swara really thought, what she really wanted.

"The best way to make amends is to make the best of things, Sanskaar! See how to go forward! You can't go back!" Swara was striding about the small garden now, and Sanskaar was leaning lazily on the armrest of the swing-seat, watching her in amusement.

"He wants to get back together with me! Does he not realise he's married to Ragini? MARRIED to her! It means something when you make a vow... you undertake to partner somebody for life... you ask Agni, one of the five elements, to be your witness as you do this. It's not something you can take lightly - pick up and throw away just like that! What does he think of me?! That I can calmly settle back into being boyfriend and girlfriend with my sister's husband!?"

She was increasing her pace around the little garden, vehemence in every line. "And as if one marriage was not enough, he forced you and me to go through the rituals as well. Doesn't that mean anything?!"

"Does it?" Sanskaar interjected, looking up at her through his lashes.

Swara stopped dead. And turned slowly around.

She stammered, "Well, we... we're not going to stay married, but we did go through the rituals, right? That's why we were so upset."

"Right!"

"It has a significance - that's why I did the karva chauth vrat, na... that's why I tied the Diwali wala mouli... you know how I feel about these things! It means something."

"Hmm..."

"Anyway," Swara started to pace again, "I don't want to go back to that point. I've told him and told him. He should just accept Ragini; she loves him so much!"

"Swara!" Sanskaar's voice was quiet but somehow imperative.

She stopped to look at him. "Kya?"

He was looking with apparent absorption at his nails but then looked up at her with a direct intensity that she was now so familiar with. "Yeh galat hai. Galat kar rahi ho tum Lucky ke saath. You're being very unfair."

"Kaise, Sanskaar? What do you mean?"

Sanskaar got to his feet. "Swara, I know it was Laksh's decision to marry Ragini. But he didn't know at that point what she was like, what she was capable of. She cheated him, created a web of lies, emotionally blackmailed him so that that marriage could take place. She tried to murder the girl he was supposed to marry - she continued the deceit for weeks till we exposed her. If Laksh hates her now, and doesn't want to be with her - it's HIS decision to make."

"But... Sanskaar...!" Swara pleaded.

"Nahi, Swara. You don't want to go back to that place in the past, I accept. I understand your point of view. But Lakshya and Ragini's marriage is a completely different matter. He doesn't have to spend all his life with an obsessive psychopathic compulsive liar! Just because she's obsessively in love with him doesn't make it ok."

"But... Sanskaar, where will she go, what will happen to her? She'll go crazy!"

"That doesn't have to be Lucky's problem, Swara! If Laksh decided to give his marriage a go, if he decided on his own that somehow Ragini is his responsibility - if he accepted her gracefully, they have a chance... because Ragini does love him. But to make him accept her, to pressure him... that's wrong. He loves you but you can't use your influence that way! He can't spend his life with a rotten girl like Ragini for your sake!"

Swara was frowning, her arms on her hips - ready to give battle but the words wouldn't come. Sanskaar was right! "Hmm."

Sanskaar looked down at her worriedly, and his hands came up in pleading supplication. "Swara, please don't push for this. My brother has lost a lot in his life these past few months. He's lost you, he's pushed me away, and his entire world has come crashing down. Don't pressure him tie himself to Ragini for the rest of his life. Please!"

Swara looked up at him. "Theek hai, Sanskaar. Maybe I couldn't see beyond my sister. You're right, Laksh deserves some peace of mind at least."

A few feet away from them Lakshya stood unnaturally still, his eyes moist. The situation, so tangled for so many days, became utterly clear to him. And as he heard Sanskaar and Swara agree that he need not be trapped with Ragini for all eternity, it was as though a huge boulder were moved off his heart. He was not obliged to be with her - even if Swara was never going to come back to him, at least he was free! He looked up at the sky, prayer and gratitude flowing into his heart!
