Life after yesterday
Life has taken an unexpected turn for Zee's SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2007 winner, Aneek Dhar as he eyes the Hindi film industry. The runners-up are two steps behind, writes Rupam Jain
It's a dream come true for three young men. From here, a bigger stage awaits them. While Aneek Dhar, the winner of Zee Hero Honda SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2007, is all set to make a mark on the contemporary music scene, Amanat Ali, the sweet and simple guy next door, has made Mumbai his second home. Raja Hassan, the maximum vote earner, who surprisingly lost to the Kolkata boy, is out to prove his mettle. For the time being, all of them have one destination in mind: Bollywood.
Aneek Dhar, who is just 17, was exposed to music right from kindergarten days. His mother, Rupa Dhar, who is also a singer, has been Aneek's inspiration. "My parents have always encouraged me to sing. It is because of them and my singing teacher Jayanta Sarkar that I have become worthy of this stage."
Just out of high school, this young lad has already lent his voice for some forthcoming films ~ Love Dot Com, Bal Ganesh and Little Krishna. "I look forward to a career in Bollywood. I would, however, like to wait for two more years for my voice to mature a little more. I am only 18 years old now. By the time I am 20, I will have a mature voice." He adds, "I admire Sonu Nigam but I don't wish to sound like him. I want to create my own identity."
The next two years Aneek wants to dedicate his time towards studies. "I will be studying sound engineering in Mumbai and then probably a masters diploma." Being a winner of the competition, Aneek has already bagged a music contract worth Rs 50 lakh with Zee TV and Universal Music. "I had decided that if I win the contest, I will make some contribution towards the development of my ancestral village in Shyamnagar. Now that I have won, I want to fulfil this wish."
The highest vote earner through "international voting", Amanat Ali from Pakistan, has plans to live in Mumbai. "Most singers want to become playback artistes but, unfortunately, the scenario is quite bleak in Pakistan. I want to lend my voice to Bollywood hits."
The 20-year-old, who was once the lead singer of Pakistani band Mekaal Hassan, has no intention of joining any other group. "I don't want to become stereotyped. It's not that I will sing for films, I also want to launch solo albums. I know the band culture in Pakistan is strong but I wish to make most out of my singing abilities."
Does the thought of not being the winner worry him? "No. The fact that at the age of 20 I have gained international popularity is an achievement. I know I have an original voice."
Amanat has already sung for the soon-to-be-released Junnon and is working on an album with Bappi Lahiri. He is also set to work with Bappi Lahiri's son, Bappa Lahiri.
Raja Hassan from Bikaner, Rajasthan, who was unexpectedly adjudged the first runner-up of the competition, has recovered from the shock. "Yes, I scored the maximum number of votes but it's all God's wish. I am happy that Aneek has won. I would have been equally happy if Amanat or I had won." After a thoughtful pause, he adds, "I thought I would win but this is not to say that I am upset."
Perhaps, there is just one regret. Raja wanted to declare his love on stage after winning the competition. "Once I win, I will blast it out," he had said a day before the competition. Though that did not happen, Raja's wife Ayesha, who is from Kolkata, was present at the finale.
After spending eight long years in Mumbai, Raja earned fame but is scared. "My passion for music brought me to Mumbai eight years back. I have struggled a lot to reach here and I don't want to look back. I, however, am afraid of maintaining this international status. It's tough being a celebrity."
Well, Raja might not have won the title but has a number of projects lined up. He is working with Shanker Mahadevan, Vishal-Shekhar, has already sung with Sumedha, another contestant in the show, for an album by Bappi Lahiri and has lent his voice for High School Musical 2.
"I am grateful to all those who have showered their love and blessings on me," says Raja before dedicating the following words to the audience ~ "Jab tak bika na tha, toh koi poonchta na tha, tumne kharidh ke mujhe anmol kar diya".
These are young sensations waiting to rock Bollywood.
