Losers' winning streak!

It's no more a winners' ball game.

The spate of talent hunt shows on TV that are on (from time to time) may have ended and winners declared, but one wonders how much of the winner's glory have these winners been able to partake of.

If anything, the growing number of singing offers that the eliminated participants have bagged are far more, when compared to the ones who've won on these shows. While Ishmeet may have beat Harshit in the recently concluded singing show, interestingly its Harshit who has caught the ears of many a music directors from Bollywood.

Kanpur Times explores how far does this winner tag help one in making a place for himself/herself. Take the cases of Mauli, Sumedha, Karunya, Vinit and Panna (among others) all of whom missed the crown but bagged lucrative offers instead.

Santosh Shende, project head of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa agrees, "Talent hunt shows are a platform to showcase the youngsters' talent. Our team has continuously striven to groom contestants to stay focused on their performance and not to get deterred by vote counts. After all, that's what counts in the long run, which is proved by the number of offers that the eliminated contestants have bagged in comparison to the winners.

"Besides when talking about achievements you can't count stage performances for they are offered to the winners as part of the contract with the channel. It is actually the independent singing offers by music directors and producers which define one's success graph. And that is where these eliminated ones have proven to be a step ahead. Which proves that its not about who's the winner, but who's a better singer."

Which is what we at KT have been saying all along. That the audience is incapable of deciding who the better singer is. Substantiating this point, Shende says, "For instance, contestants like Raja, Mauli, Sumedha and Apurva who got eliminated mid-way have been offered projects by Shankar Mahadevan, Rakesh Roshan, Mahesh Bhatt and Vishal Shekhar respectively."
Shares Jatin Pandit, of the erstwhile Jatin-Lalit duo: "That was exactly what I always told my contestants: 'With the world watching the show and reputed directors, singers, actors visiting the sets, it is your performance and only performance that will take you far. Winning is secondary.' So even though Ishmeet has been declared the winner, personally it was Abhas and Priyani's voice that moved me and I'm planning music projects with them," shares the judge of Voice of India .

Adding to the list of winners – who lost technically, are Indian Idol contestants, Chang, Parleen, Suhit and Abhishek who are all set to launch their independent Boy Band, shares Mini Mathur, the show's hostess. "Contestants show their true talent in the beginning of the shows when performance matters more than winning. That is when the judges and music directors select the candidate with whom they want to work. Just being a winner is no key to success. Just like going by the past performances Panna has been able to release his solo album, Karunya is hosting Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in Telugu besides singing the hit number Aane charaane ... in Lage Raho Munna Bhai ," adds Mini.

Confirming the trend is Poonam Jatav – one of the strongest contestants of Sa Re ... who got eliminated towards the end, has her kitty full with offers. "Winning was never my concern. I was more happy about getting a platform to showcase my talent and so just concentrated on my performance." No wonder then the girl's bagged big offers like from Nikhil-Vinay, Sajid-Wajid and a US movie where actor Gracy Singh would be playing the lead.

The last weekend of 2007 presented us with a very enjoyable variety of music and melody. The shows were full of fun and frolic with a usual dose of emotion, social messages and some brilliant performances especially from the L'il Ustaads. Having said that, there was one thing that was very conspicuous in all the four shows - there were contradictions galore in most of the shows.

In SRGMP-L'il Champs, performance wise the L'il Champs outperformed one another. The tribute paid to Sonu Nigam was also one of the highlights of the week which left not just Sonu, but even his fans quite overwhelmed. The shocker of the week was to find Amir, one of the most talented participants in bottom 3! Smita Nandi's reasoning to cover up her "good, but not so outstanding" performance by blaming her tonsils was a rather lame excuse and was rightly chastised by Sonu. But Sonu contradicted the very reasons he gave Smita about gaining public sympathy! His emotional support of Amir Hafeez, on Friday and Saturday inadvertently made Sonu attract public attention for reasons that are totally unrelated to music! On Friday, he brought to public attention Amir's family background and on Saturday, he highlighted Amir's illiteracy – two irrelevant points. If that is not publicizing private life and trying to gain public sympathy, then what else is??
