Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday announced that all recipients of Yash Bharti Samman, state's highest honour will be eligible to receive a Rs 50,000 monthly pension for life. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, wife Jaya Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan will be the first benefices of state government's newly prepared pension scheme. Earlier, the Yash Bharti Samman award recipient would fetch Rs 5 lakh. As per the revised version, the awardees are given a cash award of Rs 11 lakh, a shawl and a citation. Does Bachchan family need such pension?
The monthly pension of Rs 50,000 is the most lucrative pension scheme among the prominent schemes prevailing in the country as it offers the highest amount in the country. Most of the government officials don't get such huge amount as pension. According to Forbes, Amitabh Bachchan alone Amitabh Bachchan alone pocketed an estimated 33.5 million US dollar before taxes and fees in 2015 to rank at No. 71 on the Global Celebrity 100 list. Big B charges around 7 crore per movie and has net worth that ranges approximately 400 million US dollar. According to Asairanking website, Abhishek Bachchan has net worth of 30 million US dollar. Amitabh's wife Jaya owns moveable and immoveable assets worth Rs91.65 crore, according to her election affidavit filed in 2012. The numbers clearly show that Bachchan family doesn't need any kind of pension. They are living luxurious life and don't require money from the government to fulfill their needs. Under Integrated Social Benefit (Pension) Scheme of Uttar Pradesh government, a handicap person only receives Rs 300 monthly while under Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, a person gets Rs 300 per month. It seems that Uttar Pradesh government has enough money to waste on such rich people in the name of pension while the needy people are given small amount and ignored. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav seems favoring Amitabh and his family members as Jaya Bachchan is member of Rajya Sabha as SP member.
Uttar Pradesh government should re-think on its decision to benefit people with pension who don't require it all. If it didn't happen, we hope Amitabh Bachchan will come forward and either return the amount or donate it for needy people.
