Chapter 9
A Challenge for Duel

''Mahira ! can you hear me ? Are you hurt ?''

An urgent voice laden with concern and affection entered her consciousness as gentle hands tapped her cheek and prodded her shoulder tenderly. Mahira felt a great weight lifted off her body and sudden inrush of fresh air into her lungs.

She fluttered her eyes open.

The Jigirdaar of Janjgaar indeed.

He was kneeling beside her, his head bowed towards her, brows creased with worry.

''Are you hurt. shall I fetch help ?'' He asked again.

''No, I am simply stunned.''
She had proved herself too reckless to play the role of damsel in distress now.She concentrated to steady her breaths while her fingers worked furiously to untie the knot of chunar around her waist and pull the hem of her ghagra down to her knees.

Azad looked away, his ears and cheek burned crimson.

''I shall be fine in a few minutes.'' She tried to assure she was not injured.

Azad seemed to have read her mind. He studied her face intently as if to make sure she was telling the truth. Then he grasped her forearms with his large hands and pulled her gently into a sitting position. She leaned limply back against the vine.

Her back ached and an angry lump formed on the back of her head throbbing furiously, her elbows were bruised, probably bleeding, and her whole body screamed in pain. The smile of assurance, that she so valiantly tried to show didnot reach her lips.

She stared at her lap too ashamed to raise her eyes. Her arms tingled where he had touched her.

''Do you climb trees often ?''

Mahira couldnot help but peek at him. Azad was looking at her with the fascination of inspecting an exotic creature for the first time.

Heat rushed in her cheeks.

''Not now. When I was younger, this was one of my favourite pastime.''

''Then I think you should give it up now.''

''Why ?'' Suddenly she felt very angry. If he had not chosen to ride along this path she would have climbed to that window safely.

''After such a tumble,I thought you have learned your lesson.'' His voice quivered with latent humour.

''If you hadnt distracted me, I wouldnt have fallen,'' she argued.

'' Well, I thought, I have saved you from falling from an even greater height.'' The brackets around his mouth deepened.

''I think you should develop some more safe activity; swimming ? Horse riding perhaps ? With someone to supervise all along.''

''Thank you very much but I can climb very well, and I dont find any reason to give it up.''

She was about to add, ''One should better stop sneaking up on me now and then and catch me unaware'', then managed to develop an ounce of humility and self-possession to eat it back.

One of her status does not talk to a nobleman in such an informal way, but then again nothing was proper between them from the beginning.

''Will you give up riding just because your horse threw you off just now ?'' She couldnt believe she just said that.

Azad looked at her with mock frown, his lips tilted upwards in a faint hint of a smile.

''You are mistaken. I was not thrown off, only unseated. And I strongly believe I have just saved you from breaking your precious limbs or living rest of your life as an invalid.''

''You still dont believe!'' All blood rushed into her head and she felt a blind urge to climb that effing vine again in front of his eyes just to prove her ability.

However climbing a tree wearing a ghagra with a man standing below her, seemed absolutely unwise. Moreover when that said man already had generous views of her naked legs moments before. Lord knows what he thought about her !

Jabheda khala always poured strange tales of man's bestial nature into her ears.
Even a pure gentleman would turn into a beast if he had any chance to compromise a woman, she used to say. Now a days Mahira felt she was waving red flags for beast's attention all the time.

Azad ducked his head and coughed loud to swallow down fits of laughter that threatened to overpower him.

''No, I completely trust you. Mahira, you are indeed a woman of many talents.'' When he managed to speak again his voice was filled with mirth and sincerity but absolute devoid of mockery.

Mahira smiled and lowered her gaze. For a moment they sat in companionable silence. Shiraz grew bored and ran off to chase a butterfly.

There is something absolutely liberating in Azad's calm presence and in his implicit indulgence to all her impertinence, that she never felt like holding back her true self in front of him.

Not for the sake of propriety, not for the huge differences of their stations in life. She always felt that he secretly enjoyed her silly rebelliousness and gently push her to do something more absurd. So that he could shake his head and smile quietly in the darkness of his chamber.

Maybe, that would lift his gloom and make his day tolerable even if for few moments.

Mahira gazed with all fondness at the man sitting opposite her.

As if on cue Azad looked up and for one brief moment their eyes locked. His eyes caught the essence of sunlight and glittered like a pair of precious Garnet. His features held a distinct dreamy, relaxed expression.

An earthy leathery smell drifted over her, making her all warm and melting inside. She could not take her eyes away from him. Neither did Azad try to break it off.

Infact he leaned on to her imperceptibly.

His broad shoulders stretched the fabric of his bottlegreen robe and Mahira felt her heart thumping so loud that the whole world could hear it.

His lips were wet on the middle where he had watered them just a while ago. Turfs of stray locks hovered over his forehead, teased by playful wind.

Mahira's hand lifted as if on its own accord to feel if they were really that soft and silky as they appeared.

Azad's attention lazily caught that action at first and then did a double take. His smile froze and he jerked back in stiff alertness as if stung by an adder.

His face contorted with extreme loathing and eyes burned with vivid animosity as he hissed under his breath,'' Dont ! Dont ever dare to touch me. Do you understand. Never, ever do that.''

Before she could even comprehend what he felt so repulsed at, he was already on his feet.

In a moment he was back upon his great ebony horse. In another, he was gone.

One would say he was escaping a fire breathing monster instead of a paltry girl of eighteen.

Mahira sat there still, as if slapped.

What just happened ? why did he ran away as if seen a ghost? What did he feel so downright revolting?

Then it dawned to her. It was she. He was shocked at her audacity to try touching him. She looked at her palms. They were ill tended, rough from all the hard works, her nails clipped short to have a firm grip on quill, the corner of her fingers ink smeared, her wrist thin and unadorned. Any man of noble blood would feel disgusted to feel those inelegant fingers upon his skin.

What was she even thinking ? He was only being civil and gracious and she was deluding herself all along.

But then why that show of camaraderie when he was feeling repulsed by her presence all the long. Why even bother to be courteous and concerned about her welfare ? why would he care if she had injured herself or even got killed from that fall ?

Some other learned person could easily replace her. But of course ! Who would come to Janjgarh if she was gone? She was his only hope.

It was only a charade to keep her here and extract services from her...and she was a fool to imagine otherwise.

How could he be so cruel, playing with her emotions all the while, indulging and discarding her on his whim ?

She felt as helpless as a butterfly seized by a great black bird.

How utterly merciless to make her feel special and worthy for a few soaring moments and then kick her back to the cesspit of her wretched situation.

She had heard atrocious tales of emirs who enjoyed perverse pleasure from torturing common people. Maybe this was Azad's way of entertaining himself.

Mahira's head pounded like blacksmith's anvil upon melting iron. Her chest felt like it would burst open in pain. She thought vaguely that perhaps she'd hurt herself too much in that fall. But when she heard a guttural, rasping sound, a small part of her coldly noted it was her crying that make such a strange sound.

Mahira didnot know how long she lay there in the open, her skirt growing damp from clamped dewy grasses. When her sobs finally died away, the sky was overcast. Faint drizzle showered over her limp body as if to wash away her pains.

She pushed herself up and lurched to her feet. immediately the earth swung beneath her feet and she gripped the flowery vine for support. She shut her eyes and inhaled one great breath.

Soon she would be far away from all this burdens of unrequited feelings and heartbreak. She would be reunited with her dear sister and live with her loving family. She would cry herself to sleep tonight and a thousand nights after it.

But for now she would just go on working. She would decipher Naseer's hidden messages. She would try with all her might to help Janjgarh.
***

Azad had fled into his chamber immediately but couldnt stay there. The confinement seemed to suffocate his breath.

The memory of her face, stunned with disbelief when he threw his last glance as he left, burned with vitriolic vengeance inside his heart.

His eyes went blurry with tears, he didnot even make the effort to hide them.

She had no idea how close she came to her end. She was just a touch away.

He shut his eyes in horror. All for his carelessness and his lust for her company.

How did he allow himself to be so callous when he had sworn to protect her from all evilness including his own bestial self.

He left his room and paced through the long corridor like a man possessed. If she had touched him...he shivered involuntarily imagining the result.

Long suppressed memories raised from dark corners of his mind like a ghost and encircled him mocking at his weakness and inability stop the inevitable.

The curse his family endured for generations had taken its final run with his birth, it was now on its way of fulfillment.

The house of Mirzas was on the brink of extinction.

He could never marry, never pull a woman into his arms with desires of making love, or rather feel the touch of her love upon his body. Any touch of love, any amorous advance towards him would meet its horrible end consumed by the fire in his blood.

A mere caress on the cheek, or a playful run of fingers through his hairs could write a death warrant.

His whole body felt sick from the memories of his young adulthood when his natural curiosity towards opposite sex led to the discovery of this horror. The young court dancer Gulabibai. Adaq Khan had brought her to make a man out of him, in his early teens. The voluptuous woman who tempted him with all her practiced charms.

And the lady's maid after that. who had literally thrown herself to him. Kulsum, that was her name.

The confusion he felt, the shock at their instant gruesome death in his embrace and extent of self-loathing when realization hit home.

He was destined to live his wretched life all alone, to end generations of misery with his death.

It was only for the old Adaq Khan he had stopped from destroying himself or turning into a lunatic. It was his steadfast hope in the belief that there must be any way to lift the curse.

A saintly auliya had once told him there was no curse in this world that couldnot be redeemed, that could not be fought back with a counter spell of purity and virtue .

Adaq khan held that faith tightly in his heart searching ever since for that benevolent pure soul who would free his chieftain from this fetters of loneliness and guilt.

He came up with the idea of pulling down the library and search for any possible clue his forefathers left for him.It was his will and determination Azad borrowed to lock away those dreadful memories forever, find purpose in his life and start afresh.

And today in one moment of weakness everything nearly came undone.

Every dreadful memory came tumbling back at him.

Azad shut his eyes to stop the flashes of horrific images in his head and increased his pace.

Maddened with grief and misery he didnot see Lautif coming from opposite direction and walked straight into him. Lautif caught him to regain his balance and prevented falling both of them in a heap. Then he saw his face and panicked.

''Are you not feeling well, my Lord ?''

Azad was then beyond the level of giving a coherent reply.

'' Go to her Lautif ! Help her to walk indoors, carry her if needed. She was hurt. Dont let her do anything foolish.''

His voice was almost unintelligibly thick.

''She is beneath my bedchamber windows under the boughs.''

Without any further question to this extraordinary request Lautif nodded and rushed to obey orders only to find her long gone.

An anklet lay forgotten on the ground among clamped grass and loose soil.
******

Mahira stood in front of an battered doorpost and knocked hesitantly. She had never ventured into this section of the fort, but she had to meet Adaq Khan urgently. She had found two more cryptic elegeic notes in Naseer's book.

It must have been evident she had cried hard, for the moment she entered, Adaq Khan put down the papers he was working on and ushered her to a cozy airchair and offered sweetened water.

''What had happened ?'' His broad features wore a frown of genuine concern. Mahira did not reply and stared blankly instead at the glass she was holding.

'' Bol bhi dey, Chori ! Get if off your chest'', He shook her gently by the shoulder.

Mahira came out of the stupor and sighed.'' I will be fine, in time, Adaq Chacha. I came upon a sad realization, which I was ignoring long in foolish delusions. It is good I accept my situation soon and make peace with my reality.''

The same jab of pain and emptiness in heart, her constant companion since her father's death, came back to haunt her with the sense of all engulfing loss.

But she would not let it sway from her purpose. She was on a mission.

''But I am not here for that. Chachajaan, can you tell me about Aazad's father ?''

''Naseer ?'' He turned his back to her but she could see the change in his strong features.''What is it you want to know ?''

So she guessed right. The botanist and scholar healer was indeed Azad's father.

Mahira never felt an iota of doubt in Adaq's company. But today she felt strangely reluctant to share the discovery with him.

Once they were told to Adaq, they would not remain secret to the Chieftain and she didnot want to disclose this matter to Azad until she fully comprehended the real meaning and intention behind those intentionally concealed epithets.

''Who was this wife, he loved so much and whose loss he mourned with such intensity ? Was there someone else other than Badibegum ? ''

''No was Badi begum all along, Salema, she was lovingly called by her husband. But who talked to you about these things ? surely not him. He never talks about his father.''

''I saw a reference to her in the documents. Her change, her stony indifference to her husband drove him insane. Is that why he killed himself?''

''This job of yours , it is going to open up old wounds.''

''It will but I am ordered to transcribe documents without thinking about the meanings they hold.It is impossible to translate meaningfully if I do not know how it fits altogether. I do not even know the names of his forefathers in chronological order !''

Aadaq shook his head sadly and lowered himself upon a footstool. His eyes went distant.

''Well I think the documents you study have these names. Gaffur,Rashid and Naseer. Gaffur was the son of Hassan who won this
Jaigirgaari from the Sultan of Delhi. Hassan's wife was a distant relative of the Caliph of Baghdad. Gaffur was extremely proud of this connection. This Gaffur was a strange man with unhindered ambition and unearthly knowledge, he guided Janjgar into the height of grandeur unimagined by his ancestors but he was the one whose unchecked greed brought misery upon it.''

''The curse ! Was he the man who brought upon the curse upon his family ?'' Mahira sat ramrod straight in excitement.

''His son was Rashid.Naseer was the first born son from his chief wife Shireen.''

''I knew this process would be painful, but what can I tell you lass, it was necessary to read out all the documents and unlock the secrets they hold. Who knows, the key might be somewhere there, hidden from plain view. I must find the way to save this family I have given my whole life to serve. Help my boy, Mahira. ''

Adaq covered his face with his large palms.

'' Naser was a good friend, a loving father. He did his best as long as he could. After that all the boy had was me. Naseer hired me to manage his household, not to bring up his son.''

Mahira sat as if carved out of stone. Her heart was too full to speak or react.

''Whatever you have found Mahira, it is best not to speak of it to Azad.'' He pleaded. ''He is already too much in ---''

Footsteps echoed in the passageway and the conversation came to an abrupt halt.

Seconds later, Lautif burst into the room and started talking animatedly at once. Then he stopped short and followed Adaq's gaze, shocked to see Mahira sitting there.

He immediately mumbled apology and turned back to leave. But then stopped midway remembering something.

He walked upon her and gently inquired upon her health.

Adaq Khan looked at him in confusion.

Then he pulled out something from the folds of his waistband and put it on the table front of her. For a while he stood looking at her tenderly as her fingers traced the thin metallic body of the anklet and her eyes welled .

Mahira looked up. Amidst her blurry vision she saw Lautif watching her with eyes warm with understanding. Tears sprang from her eyes like geysers of hot waters even before she could control and found their way down to her chin. Her body shook convulsively with their force.

Lautif couldnot take the raw pain radiated from her eyes. With a brief adaab, and a nod to Adaq, he walked away .
*****

Darkness thickened into the sky as it mourned over the last remains of a passing day. Mahira stood on the platform of the stone wall. She had tied a small iron bucket at the end of the rope and had sent it into the deep down.

She would take it back to her chamber. A good scrubbing was necessary for the floor as the punishment of such labor was for her. It would clear her head off those foolish dreams and would humble her into accepting her pathetic reality.

As the ancient wheels groaned and moved, the bucket slowly neared the top. She pulled the rope harder. Finally the full bucket came up. She unhooked it and hefted it off the stone wall of the well.

A shadow fell upon her and she glanced back.

Rahem Azad Mirza was standing on the steps not 5 feet far from her. As she looked, he came up.

May I ? He extended his large sunbrown hand to the handle of the bucket.
Mahira sank down to make a proper curtsy.

'' Sukriya !''

He started in the direction of the tower without looking at her, the bucket swayed easily in his hand.

Mahira pushed the hair out of her eyes.

Why was he here ? Why was he again doing that ? Acting as if very concerned for her ?

After his clear demonstration how much her closeness repulsed him , nothing was same between them anymore.
Mahira squared her shoulders in grim determination.

Fine if he wanted to be courteous. she would play along with her formal behaviour and court etiquette.
He would never extract any genuine response from her again. She would not offer more tender spots to him to jab daggers of insult. She had enough already.

''I had sent Lautif to you. To help you walk inside and see if you need anything.'' Azad stared straight ahead.

''Ji Huzoor Sirkar. Sukriya.'' Oh so kind of you !

''Have you tended your injuries ? I saw bruises here and there on your arms and legs. I hope nothing is very serious ?''

''I have taken care of that. Thank you for asking, My Lord !''
Dear God! this man can act.No wonder I was fooled. Just look at him !He sounds so real concerned.

They reached the door and Azad let her go inside first. Mahira tried to take the bucket from him but Azad went to a corner of the room avoiding her touch and set it down.

He turned and looked around.

''If you need anything, just let me know. I want you to be comfortable here. To feel home.''

''I have your gracious benevolence, more than enough Huzoor. I donot dare anything more. Thank you for asking, Milord !''

She bowed, waiting for him to take the hint and leave.

Except when she looked up again he was measuring her up with an earnest gaze and seemed in no hurry to go.

''Why are doing this ?''

''Doing what My Lord ?'' She grew frustrated with his continued show of intimacy. This man would not just leave her alone.

''This barrier of formality you have brought all of a sudden. All this bowing and formal addressing...you sound so cold and distant.''He struggled with his words.

''I am sorry I have displeased his Lordship. Pray tell me how to make amends. ''

''What ?''He winced.'' What do mean by talking like this ? What are you trying prove ?''

''I am sorry for the breach of protocol from my side, Huzoor. It would never happen again.''

''Allah! Stop milord ing me.'' He growled like an wounded lion.'' It sound like an insult from your mouth.''

Why do men always think shouting would put things straight.

Then suddenly he grew quiet almost thoughtful.

''You are angry with me. For what happened in the morning, I know I owe you an explanation.''

His voice grew thick with warmth.

''Please dont judge before you hear out everything. I beg you, please dont push me away and hide behind your wall of formalities.''

''His lordship doesnot need to explain anything. I have understood. Give me this credit, I am anything but thickheaded. And you were not really very subtle.''

Mahira refused to take part in that cat and mouse game once again.

''No no you got it all wrong.'' He groaned in angry frustration.

'' I am not what you see me. Not a man to be'', he halted fumbling for an appropriate expression,'' to be admired, to be stroked fondly''.

Mahira blushed beetroot from the roots of her hair to toenails, but Azad had no care what he was saying. Like a raving madman, he went on.

''The demon within me lured you but I would not let it harm you.''

''Harm me ? demon?''

Dear Lord ! He was really warped in mind and spirit just as the villagers had warned her.

''The cursed blood running in my body. I ran away not because of you, far from that, I ran to save you. I ---
Mahira forgot to breathe.

A figure darkened the doorway.
'' A lovely evening to you, Alim-e-sitt (lady scholar) ! '' Amaad's cheerful voice rang out.

Azad choked on his words at this sudden disruption. He balled his fists to school his composure.

Mahira cringed internally.

Allah ! Now Chote Huzoor would talk about the plan of going to the fair together in front of the Chieftain.

Amad ducked his head to step inside.''Aarey Huzoor Sirkar !''

Azad's face darkened like an overcast monsoon sky.''Amaad ! What the hell are you doing here ?''

''I came to see Mahira, but as I can see she is having your pleasant company. How very unexpected !'' Amad's silky tenor betrayed nothing. Infact he dared to poke at him.

'' I needed to talk to her. About something important. I was leaving.'' A muscle twitched in his jaw.

''Mahira ! It feels great to see your gentle face again.'' He raised his hand in an elegant adaab and smiled. His eyes however didnot mirror the emotion.

''Sukriya, Chote Huzoor.''

The chieftain cut his eyes back to his brother.''What business do you exactly have here, Amad ?''

''Nothing for you to be bothered, dear brother.'' Amad tried to shrug him off casually.

''Of course it bothers me. Do I not know you thoroughly, Amaad ?'' He crossed his arms in front of his chest and stood tall.'' It is fortunate, I am still here. you should not be alone with an unmarried woman.''

''Oh ! And yet, you are here. Does the rule not apply to you too, Brother ?''

''Amaad ! dont try my patience. Say what you have to say to her and I will see you out.''

The two of them stood face to face. their arms tense by their sides, eyeing each other unblinking at three paces. The tension so thick between them that a knife could cut a slice of it like butter.

''Your wish is command to us, Lord of Janjgarh ! After what are we, but lowly subjects in comparison to your greatness.'' Amad spat venom of a viper.

'' You can bend and forth laws on your whim and we are bound to accomplice. Eh, Mahira, what more are we to him ?''

''Dont pull her in between.'' Azaad felt like ripping his head off that useless body with his bare hands.''She knows nothing about your infamous reputation.''

''Oh ! My reputation ! And I trust she has a clear idea about your reality?''Amaad narrowed his eyes until they were in slits.

''Amaad !'' His howl would have cowered any lesser man.

Mahira shifted from one foot to the other, her shoulders aching with tension. It was going ugly each passing moment.

But Amaad appeared to enjoy the spat more than his own good.

'' What more have I done, Bhaijaan, other than seeking pleasure in the arms of beautiful women. They asked for it, No they begged for my loving embraces. And you know I am too generous to refuse them. And what happened to those women who thought you desirable ?''Amad threw his head up in a loud mirthless laughter.

''Death claimed them faster than your manhood, Huzoor Sirkaar !'' he chortled ,''and you have the gall to decide Mahira is safe with you rather than me? Hah ! What a jest Milord!''

Azad prayed to Lord and summoned his last ounce of patience but Amaad was not finished apparently.

''You have insulted me in the worst possible way, in front of a lady. You defamed me, and as a noble born,I have every right to reclaim my honor.''

Amaad drew his sword and tilted its tip towards his direction in the traditional signature of a challenge.

Mahira clamped her mouth hard to stop her screaming. What were these two mad men doing ? Fighting over what exactly ? Her ? This was totally ridiculous. None of them cared an iota for her. She was unnecessarily dragged into this feud between brothers,a pawn in eternal masculine power struggle.

''Dont be a fool, Amaad. what you are asking may cost you your life.''Azad's voice rang in warning, his face was alight with destructive rage.

''Or your prestigious title, Huzoor Sirkar and that sword. It would fit better in my hands.''Amad flashed a chilly grin.
'' Have you forgotten I am the champion swordsman of this land ?''

''And you seemed to have forgotten you cannot kill me off in Janjgarh.'' Azad responded with equal calmness.

''Oh but I can disarm you ! Disgraceful defeat is equivalent of death, that is what they say, isnt it ?'' Amad's lips twisted in an ugly sneer.

''Look at you, Bhaijaan ! So frightened already. The lady would think you have not a drop of male juice in you.''

That was the final straw. All sane reasoning flew out of Azad's head. Blood lust, pure and primitive danced in his burning eyes.

Azad unsheathed his sword in a flash and suddenly there were two men with long open blades facing each other in the confines of a tiny room.
