Finished watching all episodes.Beda gark and saatan chulhean di swah on the makers.

I had read Lajwanti before and while watching the serial was puzzled as the stories did not match and I was like maybe I read something else.

The OTT religiosity and the weird characterization of the female lead irritated me so much that I googled Lajwanti and it is still a story about how the returned women were treated. Lajwanti was supposed to be a chui mui and this Lajwanti obviously has no idea of the time period she is living in.

The makers really have zilch idea about rural Punjab. It would've been unthinkable for women, however sarv gun sampan they may be like our heroine, to run around so freely.

And Sikhs taking part in Ramleela-bollocks. It was always marasi's and it was always male actors who played female parts.

I was thinking that the serial was getting the hindu-muslim balance right in this episode but then they had to go around equating Muslim leaguers with Raavan.

Have never seen Daastan -the pak series on partition where hindu's and Sikhs are blamed but wondering if this is going to be the Indian version of same.

The story is very bitingly sarcastic about men hitting women, and has Sunderlal as a wife beater(just like all the other men) and Lajjo as one who accepted it and thought it normal and even a mark of manhood. They obviously will make some changes to the characters and story (which is a short story and cannot be made by itself into a daily serial since there is little material).

His friend utters the Saali line which was Sunderlal's line in the story. So clearly they have tweaked some of the characterizations (as they should imo, since I have no mood to watch a story touted as a romance, where the lead is shown hitting and slapping the women). From what is shown on the first week, with her witnessing the husband hitting his wife, it would make little sense for them to show Sunderlal hitting her and her taking it.

I was prepared for this to be on the lines of Indian Dastaan, and so it's no surprise. It is an Indian serial, which unlike the luxury parallel film may have, will obviously show it from a more Indian perspective just like Dastaan did in the reverse.

Regarding Lajjo being too free, again this was said to be a romance story told in a more contemporary and progressive manner and feel.

Obviously I missed the memo-started watching only because of the name and the backdrop.
Am never comfortable with history being distorted just to make it more palatable and this toh is the history of my backyard.
And as someone who was born and brought up in India,I would like to hope that the Indian perspective would be to rise over this blame game and get over the stereotypes-the peace-loving vegetarian Hindu's vs the agressive Muslims vs the cunning British.
This serial has a lot going for it-there is something v.appealing about the v.ordinariness of Sunderlal(how I wish these names would make a comeback),the locales look beautiful ,I just wish they would stop rewriting history- forget women, even men from good families would never get on the stage to enact anything.

I don't disagree or refute your points. You are right.
But, in regards to this:

I would like to hope that the Indian perspective would be to rise over this blame game and get over the stereotypes-the peace-loving vegetarian Hindu's vs the agressive Muslims vs the cunning British.

Where in this serial has vegetarian vs. non-vegetarian come up? I am not disagreeing with your larger premise, and forget Hindus vs. Muslims or Indian vs Pakistan, I highly dislike the way serials exalts vegetarian characters and subtly puts down non-vegetarian. Often the.virtuous heroine is veg and the we see her coming to a less "pious" house of non veg, etc etc.

But where here has the veg vs non-veg come up on this show?Where has such a juxtaposition taken place? Hindus vs Muslims doesn't equal to veg vs non-veg. Considering this takes in Punjab, where there had to have been non-veg Hindus as well, not to mention the Sikhs who were also affected by Partition. And forget Punjab, who and where would someone make that distinction regarding Independence andPartition Era, when I'm sure there had to have been a portion of the famous who were were non-vegetarian.

Hi mate
There was just one scene where during the cycle race, the muslim guy taunts Sunderlal as shakahari and then Sunderlal obviously wins.
It's probably me being extra nitpicky.

Nah, you are not being extra nitpicky. I hadn't caught that line, and if I had I probably would have had some apprehensions too. On one hand, it's just a light joke and good natured back "trash talk" between competitors.

But on the other hand, have seen enough instances where serials give unneeded and unnecessary focus on people's eating habits and choices (ie. veg vs non-veg).

So yeah. .. thanks. I hadn't caught that reference earlier.
