Hi friends,

As you know I have already made one post on Akbar's elephants with cannons. It is stimulating stuff from the Documentary Series, War in the Ancient World-Ep Ancient Tanks. This section is shown in the first 10 minutes of the episode, and you may conclude that this is all there is.

But there is even more exciting stuff waiting.

I would recommend that you watch the entire episode. In the last 10 minutes there is another section about Akbar's weaponry. This time rockets, in this part we are shown how a much smaller Mughal army defeats the Army of Gujarat of Sultan Muzaffar, using missile weapons. A particularly intriguing missile is shown, it skims the ground and it's purpose was to target elephants.

I think folks who enjoy the serial should watch this to get an understanding of how wars were fought in that era, not as simple sword fighting as depicted in our serial or even archery and a few elephants as shown in the movie JA but much more advanced than we imagine and devastating.

For people who want to read my original post, here it is- http://www.india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=4469051

It has surprised me too. It changes everything. We think of that time as the 'Bow and Sword' period, we think it is so back in time that it is lost in history. The battle scenes in serials like JA and MP, and movies like Mughal e Azam and Jodha Akbar has given us a mental picture of how war was fought in that era.

That mental picture is wrong, the reality is that war in that era would look much more modern and devastating. Rockets, hand guns, elephants with cannons, long range artillery and explosives, was the way Akbar's army fought, and maybe others too in that period.

Archers and sword wielding infantry or horse mounted sword men was only a small part of the entire military force.

Donnas one reason why the Portuguese and Dutch and other external forces could not foray into the land of Hindustan during this period was because Akbar was superior and supreme on land. And had he lived for some more years he may have created a naval force as well. He had already started working on ships and boats but couldn't complete.

I think too, in the episode, the narrator calls Akbar a military innovator. He was always on the lookout for new and improved methods, not only in war, but also in administration, in architecture, in religion and social sphere. As you say he was looking at the navy too. I would love to read more about it.

The greatest tragedy of India was that Aurangzeb became Emperor and not Dara Shikhon. That event put back progress by 200 years and destroyed social unity. If you compare it to a relay race, then Akbar did all the hard work, but that last runner undid everything by his stupidity.

Thanks for sharing Donjas.

This shows how advanced the Military was during Akbar's reign. I've never imagined the usage of rockets, explosives and other innovative weapons in the 16th century. Its much more than sword and bow as you said. Now I understand why Akbar always tasted victory in the battle field.

Akbar is a man ahead of time in this area too👏👏.I am reading many things about his greatness in the forum from various people and must say he was not given the title of Akbar just like that.He is great indeed.
