@ Gurti , Kirron played a Muslim widow Ayesha having a young chirpy son named Saleem who is her only child and hence , her whole wide world(or as we say 'kaleje ka tukra')..Otoh Saleem is also close-knit & affectionate to her mother while soon to be married to her love girl..And so we have , a happy go lucky family of mother son duo-trio(soon)..
However , the socio-political events of 70's in Pakistan , being dictated by controversial Zia-ul-Haq & aiming to rebuild Pak society by the mortar of fanatic form of religion , started showing impact on the society at grass root level..Unfortunately for Ayesha , Saleem got swayed away by the radical preachers gradually morphing Saleem into a fanatic & a hater to all other religions including Sikhism..
But the things took a real ugly turn for Ayesha when next door people & especially Saleem,to his utter shock, discovered that prior to '47 , her mother Ayesha was actually a Sikh named Veero all the while & had a full fledged family of Sikhs..It is then revealed in a flashback that when Veero was a teen , the gushy torrents of man made catastrophe('47) completely drowned her away from her Sikh family leaving her completely abandoned & alone among packs of ravaging wolves wandering here & there for hunts like her..Luckily , a Muslim 'human' among a group of marauders saved her & offered protection by asking her to marry him from which pt. she had no way except to throw away her Sikh attire Veero & wear a Muslim attire Ayesha..
Coming back to contemporary scenario , soon afterwards , Ayesha began to realise,to her shock & piling disheartedness, that the only ray of hope & love for her in this lonely planet i.e. Saleem(the fanatic) has developed, under peer pressure, hate & resentment also for her because of her Sikh background as also the new 'untouchable' kinda attitude being adopted by her social friends & acquaintances..
Young Veero somehow survived the highly traumatic & gory '47 by 'becoming' Ayesha & managing to built a fresh world for her by her..But to again bear alone in the old age same rhetorical man-made hatred especially at the hands of her own beloved child, her life Saleem coupled with shattering of human dreams & happiness ultimately made her crumble into 'silent waters'..

Btw you are/understand Punjabi ?? 'Gurti' rhymes with Gujrati/Surti so I like..thought that (sorry 4 naive assumption if its untrue) 😛

I dont catogorize them as off-beat. Most of the movie dumped here are ten times the movies that the non-ofbeat movies are. And down the lane they are remembered more. Anyway here goes;

Earth.
The best movie I have seen on the 1947 partition. True in painting things how they were, unbaised, and bringing forth just how horrible it was. What were they consequences of the seperation, how many lives it destroyed, what cost people had to pay and was it really worth it.

Ugly.
A must watch, its a materpeice. Anurag's best so far.

Udaan.
The best coming of age story from BW that I have seen. Brilliantly told. Great characters; complex with a lot of layers. Esp that of the father. The cinematography is amazing. The BG score by Amit is wow, just wow. I rate Udaan as the best movie to come out of BW in the last decade atleast.

Dhobi Ghat.
A brilliant drama about human emotions and how some encounters really change us for the better or worse. Captures the city of Mumbai in a way that hasnot beenseen on screen; the shots are beautifull. I really loved the ending and how the story of all four characters came together at that point. It was so masterfully done.

Maqbool, Haider and Omkara.
Three absolutely stunning peices with Haider imo being the best of the lot. The direction, acting, dialogue, screenplay you find here is quite frankly unparralled in BW.

Detective Boyemkesh Bakshi.
Its growing on me. A really well made thriller; albiet a bit slow at time. But the attention to detail and the cinrmatography is a sight to behold. You are transported to the Calcutta of the yore in all its glory.
The story is great too and you have to pay attention for it all to make sense. Connect some of the dots yourself.
I really want them to do a sequel.

Karthik Calling Karthik.
I love this one. A subject that you dont see in BW(or should I say not done well). Another really good thriller.

Rock on.
A story of a band; of how they fell apart and were brought together again. Deals with a lot of themes; freindship being the focus and does so in a very mature and convincing manner.
