~ CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE ~

Manik felt an icy tingle run down his spine. To see Cabir pass his statement and walk off like that was a nightmare indeed. His heart was taking the brunt of the day's events. Anymore and it might just stop! For Manik, today was the ultimate definition of disaster. And he didn't want one more piece of shit to be added to the list.

"Cabir!" It wasn't easy but he still took off after his colleague and blocked his path.

"What?" snapped Cabir in a sinister tone as he glowered up at Manik.

With the deep breaths and flickering eyes, it seemed that Manik was struggling to talk. "Don't..." he said breathlessly.

"Don't what?" asked Cabir sternly.

"Don't do this," Manik shook his head.

"Don't do what?" he shot back.

"What you're... going to do now..." Manik's voice was barely audible. This entire situation wasn't easy for him. Bending down before someone. Requesting. Begging. It simply wasn't Manik's cup of tea. But now? Today? Slap after slap. And he just couldn't fight back at all. He had probably never been in such a compromising situation for a very long time. That is... ever since the monster took charge of his life. Today, Manik was raw. Exposed. Helpless. And his monster? Subdued and chained up in the deep dungeons of his personality.

"And what exactly is that?" Cabir wasn't ready to soften up at this point of time. He was the only person in the entire department whom Manik had never tried to overpower. There was something about Cabir that made Manik insecure. Was it his big brother persona? Or were it those penetrating X-ray eyes of his that could see through his monster?

Manik was quiet. He was struggling to just admit the fact. He was like a skyscraper as compared to Cabir but in spite of that, he felt so small.

"Come on!" snapped Cabir. "Spit it out."

"All this..." sighed Manik. He struggled to look into Cabir's eyes.

"All what?"

"Cabir..." Manik was getting frustrated now. "You know what I'm talking about."

"No I don't," he snapped. "What is it?"

"You know what... Just forget it." Though Manik's voice was low as he spoke, his monster definitely seemed to be on the verge of surfacing once again. The moment he said those words, he knew that it was a big mistake because...

... Cabir just said "fine" before he turned around and prepared to walk away.

Manik hissed in exasperation and held him back. He was beginning to get tired of all this. "Listen... just..." He sighed in deep frustration and looked away.

"Back to square one are we?" Cabir was beginning to enjoy himself but did a good job of hiding it. He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. "Actually Manik. What is that you want to say? Why don't you just spit it out? Why are you struggling so much?"

"I know that you're doing this on purpose," said Manik with an obvious sense of irritation on his face.

"Exactly," replied Cabir. "And do you know why? Because I want you to say it."

Manik looked away again. That feeling of being scolded for a crime committed... that was a bit tough for him to handle. Especially when it was from Cabir.

"Manik. What the hell is going to happen if you just give in once in a while? Is the sky going to fall on your head?"

This entire pinpointing talk was so stressful for Manik that he buried his eyes into his hand and wrung it. But Cabir wasn't ready to stop his dose of medicine. "You know what? This is why you needed that punch. It wasn't for you. It was to knock that hot air out of your over inflated ego."

The punch... Manik didn't even want to think about it. The thing is that... he most probably won't even forget about it. It did indeed knock the shit out of his ego. He had never felt so helpless and powerless in a very long time. There was absolutely nothing he could do or say when it happened.

"Excuse me..." the voice of a woman interrupted them. It was the nurse. She had her eyes on Manik first and then Cabir. "The doctor wants to see you." Saying this, she disappeared into the doctor's cabin.

"Let's talk later," said Cabir seriously. "I'm not yet done with you. For now, let's just meet the doc."

Manik secretly wished that that moment never came.

Both of them headed to the doctor's office and made their way in. It was a pretty cosy, air-conditioned cabin. The doctor, a vibrant looking guy in his late thirties looked up at them.

"What's your relation with Ms. Nandini?" he asked.

Manik was hesitant yet he began to reply. But Cabir took over. "We're her colleagues."

"Oh okay," replied the doctor. "How long have you guys been working together?"

"Hardly two weeks," said Cabir.

"And her family?"

"Her parents passed away," he replied, "She has her relatives in Mangalore. So for the time being she's alone and stays in a hostel out here."

"Oh," the doctor expressed concern. "Has she ever had this before? Any idea?"

"Not sure," Cabir replied.

"Okay, now this is a case of an epileptic seizure," said the doctor. "Chances are that she might have it again in the future. So make sure that she takes the meds on time. She must not... I repeat... must not miss even a single dose. We'll also need to identify what triggers the attack. Just to know, where was she when you found her?"

"The stairwell in our office," replied Cabir.

"Was she alone?"

Cabir shot a quick glance at Manik before replying... "Yes."

"Okay," replied the doctor thoughtfully. "It is possible that she might have been too stressed out or tired. Maybe even overly upset about something. Sometimes certain lighting conditions can trigger the episode. Or a sudden shock? Over time we'll need to work and find out what triggers her. That will be helpful in reducing the attacks to a certain extent."

But Manik knew what the trigger was. Him. He had harassed her for too long. He had even made hurtful remarks about her parents. Not that he knew about it. But still, he could have been much less harsher. And then... he attempted to assault her in the stairwell. Frightened her. Made her feel helpless. I've done so much of damage. How am I going to set it right? Is it even possible to undo it?

"So when she is a bit better you can try and get her old medical records if any," the doctor continued. "Will prove really helpful. For now, I've just put her on anticonvulsants, antibiotics for the injury and something for the pain. She's most likely going to be feeling quite bad when she comes around. But it's going to get sorted out in a day or two. Let her stay off work for around three days."

"Okay doctor," agreed Cabir. Manik remained quiet throughout. He was clearly disturbed. All this new information wasn't making him feel good at all. With each passing moment, the guilt kept building up. But the horror of this entire situation over shadowed it all. The way she transitioned from being fully aware and frightened to a complete black out... the way he felt when she convulsed in his arms... the blood that dripped out of her mouth... was horrifying. Disturbing. And he felt responsible for this. He had triggered the attack.

"Let her remain here for a day or two," continued the doctor. "She's mostly going to sleep through the night and maybe even through the day. But when she comes around, get her something to eat. Something bland and easily chewable like rice or oats porridge? No large chunky foods. No spices or salt. Let's give her tongue some time to heal. Till then, stick to a bland diet. And give her plenty of fluids."

"Thank you doctor," smiled Cabir.

****************

They were now in the corridor. Manik was visibly worried. "Should we call up her relatives in Mangalore?"

"You know what," replied Cabir, "I feel that we should just give it a day or two. Let her come around. Then we'll talk to her about this. Let her decide what to do. Moreover, we don't know what kind of relation she shares with them. Her parents are not there, remember?"

Manik was thoughtful. It is a possibility. What if they don't share a good relationship with her? It might do more harm than good. Better wait. But then, a burning feeling of guilt immediately takes over. Her parents. I was so harsh with her that day. I didn't want to but... how can I even set it right? Again... anger takes over. But guess she had her revenge. She went and complained to Waudby and Mukherjee about it. But then... did she really try to protect me out there? Why?

Cabir who had been observing Manik all this while knew that he was lost in thoughts. "You know what I think..." Cabir broke the silence and snapped Manik out of his thoughts. "I think that Someone up there really wants you to straighten out your screwed up life. That's why all this had to happen in the first place."

Manik looked up at Cabir. His words had that power to induce more insight. Could it be? Is God really up to something? Does He even exist? Over the years, Manik had indeed lost his faith in God. If God existed, then I wouldn't have gone through all this. Where was He when all this was happening? If He cared, He wouldn't have let it happen. That was Manik's perception about that supernatural entity. It never existed. It was just a myth or something that people cooked up to comfort themselves. Life isn't fair. It never was.

"I had been to Nandini's hostel," added Cabir.

That piqued Manik's interest. "And?"

"And..." drawled Cabir. "She is out of station. Fortunately or unfortunately. She had just left this morning and wouldn't be back until three or four days later."

"Shit," muttered Manik. "Now who's going to stay with her at the hospital?"

"It's obvious isn't it?" Cabir had a mischievous smirk creeping up his face. "You of course. Who else?"

It's okay dear. Happy u r coming back on track.
I thought navya wil come into screen now.
But I know wil bring her in the right time.
So manik gonna stay at hospital with her.

Very different, indeed it is. In our usual story manik would be having nandini very close to him, making her sleep in hospital and now this is completely different and that's why we are hooked to this story.
