Review: Welcome Back' treads familiar ground

Anees Bazmee's sequel to his 2007 comedy is just as funny

By Manjari Saxena,

Anees Bazmee is back with the sequel to his vacuous 2007 comedy Welcome and once again it proves to be a laugh riot " at least in the first half of the film. Yes, with nearly 10 main characters trying to run each other over, it is a riot.

Welcome Back takes off from where the story ended. The now reformed but still bumbling bhais Majnu (Anil Kapoor) and Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) - the "Laurel and Hardy" of the underworld, as Wanted Bhai (Naseeruddin Shah) calls them, are again seen trying to woo a pretty young thing with the desire to finally settle down after eight years of marrying their sister Sanjana (Katrina Kaif) off to the "decent boy" Rajiv (Akshay Kumar). Their object of desire is Chandni (Ankita Srivastava), a con woman who, along with her mother (Dimple Kapadia), decides to use the foolish millionaire gangster bros as their personal ATM.

Majnu and Shetty have reluctantly left behind their days of hoodlumism to become respectable businessmen in Dubai, when Shetty's father (played by Patekar) arrives to announce he has a daughter by another marriage and Shetty, as the older brother, should take on the onus of settling her. And once again, Majnu and Shetty set out to find a "decent" boy for her. Who else should they approach but the staunch Dr Ghungroo, Rajiv's uncle " only to discover his wife has a son by a previous marriage, who would prove to be the "perfect" match for their sister Ranjana (Shruti Haasan)? But the tables turn as they discover that Ghungroo's (Paresh Rawal) step son Ajju (John Abraham) is actually a gangster.

Trying to uphold the values Rajiv left them with they try to avoid Ranjana marrying Ajju, who are already in love.

Hilarious events lead to the entry of Wanted Bhai, a don 10 times more dangerous, yet funnier, than RDX (played by the late Feroz Khan in Welcome). Turns out Wanted's druggy son (Shiney Ahuja) is obsessed with Ranjana. What follows is Majnu and Shetty trying to keep Ranjana being married either to Ajju or Wanted's son while Ajju and Ghungroo try to get Ranjana and Ajju married.

Confused? Don't be. Simply leave your brains at home - definitely don't try understanding the climax - and go have a few laughs this weekend.

Acting by Kapoor, Patekar and Shah will have you in splits. However, Dimple is quite wasted and Shruti Haasan just replaces the pretty face Kaif represented in the earlier film. The music by Anu Malik, Abhishek Ray, Meet Bros Anjan and Mika Singh is just OK, bordering on cacophony at times. But don't miss cinematographer Kabir Lal's excellent capture of UAE locales.

Out now

Film: Welcome Back

Cast: John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar

Too Much of Action and Comedy Ruins the Film

This Friday, you have a solo release, which comes in the form of action comedy film called Welcome Back. The film is directed the talented Anees Bazmee, while it is produced by Firoz Nadiawala under the banner of Base Industries Group. The film has an interesting star cast comprising of actors like Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal, John Abraham and Shruti Haasan. The two at the latter list are new addition in the sequel being the replacement of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. Of late, in B Town, the sequels have been doing wonders over the box office, before you expect much, time to dig deep into the film and get the crux of the same.

Story/Plot Uday & Majnu played by Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor respectively are the former bhais (goons) are now decent businessmen. Soon, the two witness smart ladies Chandni played by Ankita Srivastava and Maharani played by Dimple Kapadia are seen posing as Princess and Queen of Najafgarh are seen entering their lives of these two men and soon they are seen getting crazy about them. However, the two have their step sister played called Ranjana played by Shruti Haasan has to be married first and then enters another man in a street bhai role called Ajay played by John Abraham from Mumbai who falls in love with this lady. Considering their white collar life, the two are seen separating their stepsister from this street bhai, however, it becomes an exercise to futility. This is where the most powerful and wanted underworld don comes into picture played by Naseeruddin Shah. So, how Ajay finds his way to his love interest from the clutches of this powerful bhai and his son played by Shine Ahuja becomes the climax of the comedy film.

Script, Star Performance and Technical Stuff

Now, talking about performances, the sequel loses its sheen if we compare with the prequel. In terms of humour, comedy, action and performance, the film lags behind than the 2008 prequel called Prequel. More often the film seems lagging behind in having some really cool punches, which made the prequel different from the others. The addition of new cast like John Abraham and Shrutti Haasan doesn't seem to fit into bills unlike the way Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif mastered in the prequel. The beauty and integrity of the film seems to have hampered to a great extent. Ironically, the script seems losing its sheen from the point it starts, however, in the second half there seems to be the comeback of this film with several cool performances of Naseeruddin Shah, Shiney Ahuja and the duo businessman - Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar. The script gets some life only in the second half, while the humour also adds up to a tangible meaning, which the first half unfortunately lacks.

Now, talking about the other aspects like the music, cinematography, locations and other aspects, these seemed okay. One of the striking features of this film is that it is the first B Town movie, which was shot inside the Emirates Palace based in Abu Dhabi after the Hollywood action flick Fast And Furious. The filmmaker and his team was successful in developing a replica of this Palace in Mumbai film city in order to shoot the song called Tutti as the authorities didn't allow them to shoot the same in the real palace back in UAE. And not to forget the comeback of Shiney Ahuja in the film who was seen in playing the character of the bigger don in the film seemed decent over the silver screen after almost 8 years. Lastly, talking about the film's music, it seems worthy enough to catch up especially the special numbers, which are seen well placed and high over the chartbuster's list.

Welcome Back - Last Word

Though the filmmaker is seen making tall claims about the sequel in terms of quality of content and performance comparing the prequel but the matter of fact is that opposite is true. The earlier instalment of welcome franchise seems to be better than the sequel in terms of good humour, decent performance and music. However, the film at many places was seen suffering in a big way, right from making the audience laugh to entertain people in a way they expected from the sequel. It seems that the filmmakers simply made a sequel with their free will and without actually bothering much about the expectations that come from the audience. Though the film can be called as a family movie to a great extent yet it seems to lag behind in many ways, which makes the credentials of the filmmaker at stake.

Rating - 2.5

Welcome Back Movie Review
Welcome Back is an upcoming action comedy film. It stars John Abraham, Shruti Haasan, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Paresh Rawal in the lead roles. It is being directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Firoz Nadiadwala. Welcome Back is scheduled to release on 4 September 2015.Expectations:

Welcome Back is a sequel of 2007 release Welcome. The film was one of the biggest hit of that year. Not only that the film has been a huge success on television since release which endorsed the its popularity. So the expectations will be very high from its sequel. The only negative point is that Akshay Kumar is not in the lead.

Welcome Back Review: Story

Welcome Back starts from where the first part ended. Majnu and Shetty have now become the respectable businessmen in Dubai. One day the Shetty's father came and tell them that he had another daughter (played by Shruti Hassan) from another marriage.

Now they want a decent boy for her to get married. They approached Dr. Ghungoro (Paresh Rawal) as his wife had another son from her previous marriage (played by John Abraham). But he is also a gangster.

In the mean time both the Bhais fall in love with a pretty young lady Chandni (Ankita Srivastava), a con woman who, along with her mother (Dimple Kapadia), decides to fool the gangster bros to loot them.

The hilarious events lead to the entry of Wanted Bhai (Naseruddin Shah) whose son (Shiney Ahuja) falls in love with Shruti. Now then Majnu and Shetty try to keep their sister being married either to Ajju or Wanted's son while Ajju and Ghungroo try to get Shruti and Ajju married.

Too much confusion? Watch the film to understand (if you can).

Welcoem Back Review: Direction, Editing Screenplay

The film has been written by Anees Bazmee, Rajiv Kaul & Raj Shandaliya. The first half is very good. The scenes between Uday Shetty and Manju are extremely funny. The comedy is also interesting, engaging and entertaining. Also, the pace of the drama before interval is fast and there are no boring moments too.

The film loses its pace in the second half. The scene where Wanted Bhai (Nasseruddin Shah) fight with Uday and Manju are hardly funny. The climax will be hard to digest for many people. Dialogues are very appealing, again, more so before interval.

Anees Bazmee's direction caters to the masses and the family audiences, for whom the film is meant. The classes may approve less of the loud comedy but the film will appeal to the youth, masses and families. Music is average with Tutti Bole Wedding Di is a standout song which helps the film to build up well. Editing could have been tighter. The production values are high making it a delightful watch.

Welcome Back Review: Star performances

As for star performances are concerned, Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor has out shined all the other actors. They both complement each other wonderfully and together they create entertainment galore. John Abraham does well especially in action sequences. Shruti Hassan is good but her expressions don't vary much. Though her chemistry with John Abraham works well.

What's Good:
Uday-Manju
Dialogues
Comedy
Cinematography

What's Bad
Lose 2nd Half
Over The Top Climax
Editing

Welcome Back Movie Review: Verdict

On the whole Welcome Back is a laugh riot. The film will score big especially at single screens. Give it a chance and have some laughs this weekend.

Bollywood review: Dubai shimmers in 'Welcome Back,' but is that enough? It's madness that could entertain you if you are wired weirdly

By Sneha May Francis
When Aamir Khan walked on-screen wearing nothing more than an ancient transistor hanging down from his neck, it created a box-office sensation (of sorts), but when the exact same trick is blatantly copied, this time, with the pesky funnyman Raajpal Yadav in the fore, it appears unfortunately tacky.

While that sequence might've been Aneez Bazmee's overzealous attempt at poking fun at Bollywood, it's so tawdry that it fails to tickle us.

What it does, in turn, is leave us highly exasperated.

Watching Anees' madcap gangsters - Majnu and Uday - jump back into action from where they left off back in 2007 (Welcome') is a tedious exercise. One, that teaches you to "load our imaginary gun" but to stay in "control" despite knowing the outcome won't be fun.

He throws in everything from mindless action, insipid romances, mediocre one-liners, item songs, silly bromances, and cheekily turns up the volume. So, every character works tirelessly on twisting their facial muscles and amplifying their voice.

Writers Rajiv Kaul and Anees borrow the same thread of absurdity from the original, and send the whacky Uday and Majnu to find a "decent groom" for their newly acquired sister Ranjana. And, this time too, they end up knocking at Ghungroo's door. But, it's never a smooth ride for the mad duo, and what follows is an absurd journey that stretches on hopelessly forever.

At one point, the strong hero is seen flying and hopping over camels for a strange rescue mission, and no, I'm not making this up.

Anees' characters, each more obscure than the other, works continuously to tickle us, but unfortunately, the routine appears forced and unfunny. If they aren't mouthing strange one-liners, or making funny faces, they are busy gyrating to silly dance tracks.

Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar do all it takes, and appear genuinely earnest, but its tiring to watch them bounce around for no real reason. There's also the celebrated Paresh Rawal, who manages to hold his own, despite landing a character that isn't allowed to flaunt his comic genius.

John Abraham remains calm, and lets his seniors do all the work. He pitches in with his shirt-less pose, and that's probably a wise thing to do. Shruti Hassan too manages to stick to the pouting and posing.

There's also Dimple Kapadia and Naseeruddin Shah. One wonders what prompts actors of their stature to step into a frame that glorifies buffoonery.

While the laughs were limited, it was indeed delightful to see Dubai shine and shimmer. This could possibly be one of its few highlights.

Movies like Welcome Back' or its predecessor Welcome' are best left untouched.

It's madness that could entertain you if you are wired weirdly.
