What did he want from her? he kept wondering. Why did he keep glaring at her whenever he saw her, or deliberately refusing her help.
Deep inside, he knew the truth. He wanted her to react. He wanted her to fight back, like the Amaya he knew and had come to love so much that it hurt to think about it.
" She's just a stranger" he told himself, that's all.
He ignored the tiny voice inside his head, which admitted the truth. He shook his head fiercly, trying to get that voice to stop, trying to get it out of his head.
"Mantu did you finish the decorations on that side?" Atom called to him, shaking him from his thoughts.
" I'm almost finished Atom! I'll be there in five minutes to help you."
He took a step back to check on his work, when he notices Amaya standing not five feet away, with a pained expression on her face.
She offered him a cup of tea, which he declined.
" I like Jazz's tea better thanks" he told her coldly.
She said nothing. Mantu realized then that it was her silence that hurt him. He wished she would yell at him. Confront him for his rude behavior. He wished she hit him, threw things at him, anything was better than
her silence.
But she said nothing at all. His heart screamed at her.
" I should have realized with city girls" he began again, his voice sounding unlike his own, as he continued on without even knowing what he was saying
" They are quite stupid. They allow their family to insult me and my friends, then they sit there quietly watching the fun."
Again, she said nothing.
" You know if it weren't for Rama, I wouldn't ever step foot into this house. I don't like many of the people who live in it" His voice was getting colder, and meaner by the instant. He could see Amaya shaking as she looked away from him, as if every word he spoke was a physical blow to her. His ego drove him onwards, even as his mind screamed at him to stop, and his heart ached fiercely, longing to hug the beautiful girl in front of him.
Still, the words flowed out of his mouth, the insults flowed on and on, each word making Amaya flinch and recoil even further. Still she said nothing.
"I'm beginning to agree with what some people were saying about you and your family. I'm seriously beginning to wonder about your dad you know..." And then he stopped. Amaya's head whipped up from the ground, her eyes wide with shock as the tea tray fell out of her hands and crashed onto the ground. Mantu knew he had gone too far. Way too far. He felt ashamed, and the heat crept into his face. He felt like slapping himself. This isn't you Mantu. When did you fall this far
Amaya's hands curled into fists, and her eyes grew wide with shock, hurt and anger as they looked right at him.
All the hurt she had hidden came gushing out of her as angry tears came rushing out of her eyes.
" Amaya I'm so sorr.." Mantu began. Amaya raised her hand to stop him " Enough Mantu" she said in a deathly quiet tone. "Enough".
" You can say anything you want about me.. You were my closest friend.. You have the right. " she began.
" But nothing, and I repeat nothing, gives you the right to say ANYTHING about my dad, do I make myself clear?" her voice rose 4 octaves as she stepped closer to Mantu
Mantu could say nothing but bow his head in shame.
" You were my friend Mantu. I trusted you with everything I had, because I believed that you were one of the most good hearted people I had ever met. I used to think you were like my dad, a superman just like him. That you could do anything"
" I'm ashamed. I've put up with it all, all you taunts and all your insults, but this was the last straw. I'm ashamed I ever thought of you as a friend, I'm ashamed that I stood up for you and defended you against my Nanaji. I guess he was right about you,and I was wrong" Amaya was close to breaking down, the sobs escaping from her inevitably. Every word, every tear, penetrated Mantu's heart like a sword. And he couldn't do anything about it, because he knew he deserved this. This, and so much more, for what he had said.
Amaya was yelling at him now. She pushed him back with her hands and continued to scream. " How could you Mantu. Today you've broken every relation there ever was between us. Yeah, you thought you broke them when you asked for your watch back, but I was still clinging onto the hope that there might be something still left between us"
" I HATE YOU MANTU" she screamed " I can't believe I was in love with you for so long!"
She stopped. She hand't meant to say that. It had just slipped out. Mantu's heart stopped. All around him was silence. All he could think about, all he could see, was this girl in front of him, who had just the words he had been aching, had been dying to hear.Amaya stood frozen in front of him, tears dripping down from her beautiful eyes that were wide open with shock.
He stared at her for what seemed like an eternity. She began to draw back, stepping away from him and wiping her tears.
His mind was racing. She can't go yet. I have to make her stay. What should I do!
He had just opened his mouth, when a voice sounded from below
" Amaya, come help me with the dinner please!" said Sneha , calling from the kitchen.
Amaya looked longingly at Mantu. Without turning she replied " Coming Mom." She took a deep breath, and ran downstairs.
Mantu stood still for a long time, unaware of the time, of his surroundings, of anything but the echo of Amaya's voice telling him she loved him.
His legs trembled beneath him and he sank to the ground. He found drops on his hands and discovered he had been crying silently. With no one around
he began to sob silently, leaning against the faded walls.
He had ruined it. He had ruined any chance he had with the love of his life, because of his own weakness and stupidity.
How would he get her back now. Without her, he couldn't breathe, he couldn't think, and he had no will to live.
And all this time, he had a chance of a lifetime, a chance to confess his love and gain a soulmate. He had ruined that chance.
Then he thought of what Rama had told him " True love never gives up."
He slowly stood up, wiping his tears.
" I will fix this Amaya" he said aloud, determination rising up inside of him.
" Our love will overcome our weaknesses, conquer our obstacles, and sweep away our differences. Our love will win. You fought as hard as you could for it, and I did nothing to help you in our battle. Now it's my turn"
