The Hollywood production Fox Star which made its debut in the Indian market with the Shahrukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan is having a disastrous time in the Indian market with a long list of flops like Brothers, Guddu Rangeela, Hamari Adhuri Kahani, Mr. X, Khamoshiyan and the epic disaster Bombay Velvet all coming this year. They also took the other mega disaster Broken Horses for release in India. Earlier it was no different with,Finding Fanny, Humshakals, Bullet Raja, Citylights etc and under performing big budget Bang Bang.
It could be bad luck or bad choices as films like Knight and Day and Warrior which were made as Bang Bang and Brothers in India were big flops in Hollywood. Generally Hindi films need a higher emotional quotient to work and these films were pretty soulless.
Next for the studio will be Shaandaar which is being looked at as a 100 crore film by the industry and trade but if the film is good and has super hit music it will get around 80 lakh odd people to the theaters as will be city film so to squeeze 100 crore out of these it has to be done by clever distribution and ticket pricing.
But the acid test will be Prem Ratan Dhan Paya which on paper is a film that can't go wrong with Salman Khan coming of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the director being Sooraj Barjatya who has hits of the magnitude of Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Maine Pyaar Kiya which no present working director has especially the former.
Basically Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a sure shot with the only negative being Fox Star but luck factor does play a part in the fate of every film. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a quintessential Hindi film and not a Bang Bang, Bombay Velvet or Brothers which are aping Hollywood or Europe so if this somehow goes wrong which is unthinkable then its likely nothing will work for this studio.
